Can we eat healthily on our Early Retirement budget?

Early Retirement comes at a cost and now is the time we need to rein in our weekly spending to ensure our dreams remain on track. One of our key priorities is to enhance our health having taken the opportunity to retire at the age of 51 in the summer of 2022. We have a weekly budget to keep to, but are not willing to compromise our healthy and fresh eating- it is a challenge but we want to share that challenge with you and see how we go...
We are Richard and Jackie and we live in the UK. Our plans for early requirement include relocating to the Yorkshire Dales, developing our forever home and travelling the UK, Europe and eventually the world in our VW campervan Nelson.
You will soon realise that we are complete RU-vid beginners with all the challenges of creating and publishing videos ahead of us, not to mention uploading when on the road.

You guys are so lovely! We also early retired 6mo ago at 50 and 51. We moved from the States to Mexico to be able to cover our gap years until we can take from our retirement savings without penalty (we'll be able to do that at 55 like you - technically it's 59 and a half, but with some financial yoga we got it to 55 :)). Just subscribed and looking forward to watching more of your videos - watched a bunch this week already... Cheers!🥰

Really interesting to hear your budget goals. Don’t think I could manage on £120 but I’m going to give it a go and see🙂. I think taking out the cash is a good idea because it’s too easy to tap, tap ,tap to pay for stuff. Just a point on diet, eggs are a good source of protein for breakfast and not too expensive (reduces the sugar intake!). Happy travels, Ruth

Yes it certainly makes us think about what we are spending and as long as we are there abouts it means we won’t need to work until we get our pension which is good incentive. Our weekly budget we filmed for the first week was higher in calories than normal as we did a week of hiking! Love omelettes in the morning 😊 good luck having a go!

Pleased to hear your budget can be stretched to campsite costs. I am going to start setting a weekly budget as l can overspend and l need to increase my savings to facilitate my travel plans.

Richard loves his ‘Cash is King’ mantra 🤣 but it really does work. We have tweaked the budget since we did this video so it didn’t feel like we were not able to afford to travel. We now take out £200 a week, it pays for everything including petrol, camping fees, food, wood for heating the house and any treats. If we don’t spend it, we put it in a pot for when we might need it! If we need to overspend we try to make it back the next week!

I am sure you will manage on the cash set for weekly shop etc some weeks may be more expensive than others ( when the car needs filled up expensive week) but it should even out in others , for us I am a vegetarian so I am a cheap date... lol... but my hubby has always eaten meat which I don't mind cooking for him as for me being a vegetarian it was for health reasons due to tummy surgery many years ago.. so it does not bother me cooking or touching meat.. I always cook two meals for him and freeze one , I do eat eggs and drink milk again recommend years ago I have a food plan on my wall in my kitchen a chalk board for meals... not mine as it would read veg HA! but for hubby and his meat meals I plan for him Loved your shop enjoy your week x x x keep safe x x x

Yes we do batch cook where possible and freeze meals. Last week was particularly carb based as we knew we were hiking so much!

Have you tried the Olio and Too Good To Go apps? I use them to stretch my early retirement budget. There are several companies around Skipton that use them, so I'm sure there are some around Settle as well. (3rd time trying to leave a comment - hope it works this time!)

My sister mentioned the too good to go app. We’ll have a look. The biggest thing we are enjoying is planning our food for the week and being more mindful not to have any waste. Boothes do a good line on reduced fresh foods that we keep stocking the freezer up with

@@earlyretirementwanderlust I agree with liking food planning - I made a chalkboard for my kitchen and plan all my meals to ensure that I don't have any food waste.
