A big part of cruising is looking after your boat so it can look after you. In the Mediterranean most of those jobs are done in the winter and the list can get very long.
This is the part of cruising you don't often see on RU-vid but it is part of the lifestyle so this is a different episode from our usual films and I hope will give those of you who wonder about what it's really like to live this way some insight into cruising.
I also take the opportunity to talk to other cruisers here in Porto Montenegro about their experiences.

As others have said ... Two equals one spare... Interesting episode. People forget how much they spend on a house, and a boat is your home and your car AND your holiday (how much do you spend per year on ONE holiday). If one can earn as you sail, like yourself, it does take the pain out of it ...

Keeping systems as simple/mechanical as possible, is a big help. There's a youtube channel called Sailing SV Lynx, where a couple in their late 60's(?) are about to start building a modified 50 foot catamaran from Schionning. In it, he detailed his search for the best engine to couple to a hybrid propulsion system and settled on a mechanical Nanni engine, because of its' ability to be fixed by crew anywhere in the world without the need for a laptop and a company technician to diagnose problems and not void the warranty. It's a fascinating technical channel.

Thanks for the video. I enjoy the boat jobs videos. Owning a 35 foot sailboat myself, I often tell people that sailing is 75% sanding/varnishing and 25% sailing.

The reality is, that regardless if you are cruising or not, you will have to work on your boat, period....unless you do not care for it and let it go to pot and allow it to become a derelict boat in short order. I am not a cruiser obviously, but my boat is 15 years old and I work on it constantly, not because it is a bad boat, or the quality of the construction is not good enough, or the systems in it are substandard, but because the boat sits on a marine environment, which is corrosive, damp, etc, and it needs maintenance....constantly. We seldom brake down, and the reason is, because whenever anything goes wrong with any of the systems, it gets taken care right away, and because I also maintain all systems in a rotation system, so I find what will potentially fail and it gets taken care before it does. I always say, there are not unsafe boats out there, but rather poorly maintained boats that become unsafe and dangerous over time. I live 28.5 miles away from my boat, I work around the same distance....still I go to my boat several times a week, including weekends, why? because I want to make sure everything is the way it should. Because we do not go out sailing every single weekend, I make a point of "exercising" different systems every time I go there, i.e. electrical system (genset, inverter, etc.), electronics, radar, bow thruster, engine, heads, pumps, thruhull valves, emergency pumps, winches, hatches, rigging, etc. I feel regardless of the quality or age of the boat and its systems, unless the are looked after continuously, you are asking for trouble.....just my opinion!

Butler Technique were extremely helpful when I needed a 60mm 80 deg bend with male ends. They searched the warehouse and came up with an excellent solution of parts that fitted together. That was in 2010 and its still in use as is the Webby they supplied.

Suggest signal/continuity testing on the wiring and the pins/connectors starting from the heater and working back to the cpu if you discover lack of a signal. I couldn't tell if you have a control wire in addition to a power wire. Check for signal on both. If you are missing a signal from either or both coming out of the CPU, then if you can open up the cpu, you may be able to follow the circuit(s) on the baord to see a problematic solder connection or some sign of obvious corrosion that you might be able to clean up. Make sure that the cpu is getting adequate power, too.

Very good piece on the cost of sailing and the time spent on maintenance! I can identify! I’ve bought my first and second boats in my first 4 years and have been astonished at how much I have spent to get them the way I want them. £13,000 on the second one, a Dehler yacht in the first year. I am just now completing a project where I created holes in my diesel tank to remove sludge! ⛵️ But can I put a cost on the joy of taking my yacht across the Irish Sea to Scotland and Wales? Worth every penny!

I’ve been in hvac for 50 years. However in 1982 I had an apprentice blow a chimney apart on me so that was the last day I touched oil heat. But that looks like the controller isn’t initiating the igniter coil. Sorry, wrote this before you came to the same conclusion 😉

the venturi is blocked-/dirty the fan needs proving before the flame, you have no flame therefore no spark. most people panic and buy a control board because they cant work out whats wrong. try above first then i will give you a trade secret of how to jump the pcb- may work, might not!

Would you consider chucking the Webasto and getting a Chinese heater? (at a fraction of the price)
@svfairisle
@svfairisle Год назад
I'm not sure you can get a cheap Chinese heated that will do what the Webto does. From what I've seen they are warm air heaters. The Webasto heats water which is pumped around the boat to heat exchangers and radiators in all cabins. It also heats has a solenoid to switch to heat water for the shower etc.

Hi Steve and Judy, my boat is in Lefkas I need to do an export to Albania as I am not vat paid. I know you did an export from Corfu quite recently. Someone is trying to charge me 800 Euros to do the job for me, I feel thats just too much. I guess you need to go to immigration and customs office in Corfu any tips please? how long did it take?
@svfairisle
@svfairisle Год назад
Hi Debra, not sure what you mean by ‘doing an export’ if you purely need to check out then is a very simple process and you certainly don’t need an agent, especially one that wants to charge you that sort nod money. We showed exactly how we checked out in the episode when sailed to Montenegro in September. Unlike a lot of places the ports police aren’t bothered about seeing the boat so my advice is not to take the boat into the industrial port (we did do on a previous occasion entering Greece, there’s an episode that shows it. The best anchorage is by the Citadel, then walk to the port through the town, go to ports police first with your passports and boat papers, if you get the small lady she will try to make your life difficult, it’s her idea if fun, but just ignore it. Go the customs and show the boat papers, then back to ports police with the firm they give you and your done. It’s all in the map in the episode. Takes anywhere from 30 mins to 2 hours. Unlike other places they don’t seem concerned when you leave so you can walk back to the boat and leave the next day if you wish.
