We are Tom & Isabel, and for the last 7 months we have been traveling through the nations of Scotland, Ireland & Wales in our self converted Ford Transit. Now we are back in Cornwall as we prepare for a summer of European travel. While at home we decided we wanted to show off what we love about Cornwall, the people, the landscape and history.
We introduce you to our new Cornish series; all about how the people of Cornwall have shaped and in turn have been shaped by the history and landscape of this nation. We kick off this series with an epic 28 mile pilgrimage along the Saints Way. Cornwall is known as the land of the saints and in this episode we follow in the footsteps of the early celtic travellers. The Saints Way spans coast to coast from Padstow all the way to Fowey.
We welcome you at 8am ready to catch a bus to Padstow with Tom's brother Merran with our backpacks full with everything we need to walk and wild camp for 2 days. After an hours bus journey we arrive to the starting point of the walk, St. Petroc's church in Padstow. Isabel embraces the liberating feeling of having everything you have in your backpack. We set off for our 28 mile pilgrimage and already start foraging some plants to eat. We find some Pennywort that isn't to Merran's taste ha. Tom explains why this route is so important; partly because of the two rivers that almost meet; the river camel and the river Fowey, at one point you could navigate a boat up one river and then you would have a 4 mile gap to walk across before meeting the next river. We walk about five minutes and we are feeling good! Cornwall is known as the land of the saints as nearly every place name in Cornwall is derived from the name of a saint. We appreciate the beauty of spring in Cornwall as we walk along this beautiful track and Iz tells you about this week's sponsor; Athletic Greens!
Tom explains why the Saints would have taken this land route to get across to the south coast. We really savour the landscapes around us, taking it all in and appreciating traveling just by foot with everything we need to wild camp, eat and drink for two days in our backpacks. We see so many beautiful lambs on our first half of the day, and Merran appreciates the unbelievable beautiful places along the way. Tom continues to talk about the stream of people that would have been arriving from Wales and Ireland and heading across the land to cross over into mainland Europe along this Saints Way route. We get stunning blue skies on our first day that we weren't expecting, and we get a 360 degrees view of the landscape around us, and we can even see where we are heading to camp for the night; Helman Tor.
We have a sandwich at the side of the road and then head into a hotel we passed on the walk to have a nice cold icy Cornish cider. We trek up a steep hill and find some three cornered leeks to eat. We start to find the walk more difficult as the day goes on and we look forward to getting to Lanivet where we will have our next break at the pub there. After a quick refill of our water bottles there, we have to set off for the final leg of our 18 mile journey that day, to get to Helman Tor where we will wild camp. On our way we find some Garlic Mustard and Tom tells you about his accident when he was younger at the very spot we were walking along.
We finally make it to our wild camping spot for the night and we set up our tents and give our feet a well deserved rest. Iz cooked us up some noodles and we have our friends Kate, Tom, Molly and Jazz join us for a campfire and drinks round the fire under the full moon. Unfortunately that night our mic was trod on and we hadn't realised it had damaged the mic so the second days audio footage was either silent or had a loud buzzing sound. We wake to another beautiful day on the tor and we have coffee on our camping stove and set off for another day's walking. We forage some young beech leaves that morning and make our way to Lanlivery. We walk on and meet some horses and cows along the way. We make the final stretch along the banks of the river Fowey. We meet up with Toms mum and go for tea in the house Tom was born in! We head back to the van and drive about an hour to an Easter party with Tom's family.
A big thank you to Dalla for allowing us to use their music on this video. If you would like to check them out, head to: open.spotify.com/artist/1BNKq...
Thank you so much for watching! I hope you enjoyed the first episode of our Cornish series. Sending love to you all! Take care and have a great week!!
