Among all the metals, gold is about the best at reflecting IR light, and most of the heat is carried by the IR light. It's also pretty good at conducting heat.

The reason they're confident is because gold has a pretty high melting point and because it's reflective, a lot of the heat energy is reflected off of the bar. sand it and make it less shiny and it'd more than likely get much hotter.

But thermal conductivity is probably involved with how quickly the heat is spread. They do not reach melting point on the large bar because the thermal conductivity is not allowing heat to build up around the point of contact. Also, very little convection is probably occurring. Most of the transfer is radiation.

You don't actually need it to be hot for that to start a fire, you just need it to be very clear It could be near freezing, but as long as you have clear skies you could still do it
