Can We Pray For Someone's Salvation After They Die?

the church has always, at least for the last few centuries, understood this as praying for the souls in Purgatory. Those souls who have been saved yet lack the perfection necessary to enter heaven. Our Prayers and sacrifices aid in that perfection process so they can enter heaven.
But what Im asking is fundamentally different.
Can we pray for someone's Salvation after they've died.
Well, what are funerals for?
Unfortunately, modern man has lost the true meaning of funerals.
They are not to celebrate the deceased life and tell funny stories about them
They are not only for the living to say goodbye to their loved ones. But more importantly they are for the living to pray for the deceased person so they can enter heaven.
It is said that the deceased does not care about your tears, your tears are for you. But your prayers are for them.
But are our prayers simply to get them out of Purgatory.

Woahhhhh I did not know this! I lost my grandfather who was not Christian last year while I was still a Protestant, and the best counsel my pastor could give me was to have a good cry and properly mourn for him. When I became Catholic, I wondered this in the back of my mind, but hearing this I think I must pray and offer sacrifice for him. THIS is the kind of content the world needs!! Keep it up brother!!! First time seeing RCIA. Something that I was wondering about. Baptized at birth in 1950, never went through any formal confirmation. Seems ironic that I went to Catholic elementary school (4th to 8th grade) and one year at a Catholic high school) but never remember getting confirmation in the curriculum.

@@mjl.9-19 Please inquire about a Confirmation program. It's absolutely critical, not optional. You are not a warrior for the faith until you have been Confirmed, and it is said that no one who is not Confirmed will be able to withstand the trials of the end times, hold out against the Antichrist, and maintain the faith. Plus, it's just flagrantly nuts not to want to receive as many sacraments as one can and the special graces with each one.

I made a list several years ago naming everyone I could remember who have died, family, friends, neighbors, teachers, priests etc…everyone..then I’ve added those I can no longer remember, anyone who’s in purgatory because of me, and all my family back 1000 generations, especially those involved in persecuting the Church during Luther’s revolt, I’ve been praying for them every single day for 3+ yrs now…Padre Pio believed in praying for souls asking the prayer to be applied prior to their death

Someplace it was explained to me that there is no ‘timeline’ in God’s Eternal Being. He has no beginning and he has no end. Glory to God! So everything is happening right now in His time frame! Every time I receive the Eucharist, I am there at Christ’s sacrifice for me. I can pray to comfort the heart of the sorrowing Blessed Virgin Mary at the Cross. I can rejoice at her coronation in Heaven! So I can pray for everyone who ever lived and died. I can get forgiveness for sins I committed a long time ago and sins in my family line. I can talk to God about sins I hope to avoid in the future and invoke Saints and Angels to be watchful with me. I pray for future spouses of my grandchildren and future great-grandchildren I may never meet. And I’m so so grateful for these Graces and Provisions and Anticipations God’s Mercy affords us. 🤎

This gives me hope for my Brother Walter. He was the sweetest person you’d ever meet, a far better man than I was. Yet it was like he was cursed. His grandfather was a mason, his family was in tatters, he was despised by all of them and even his only friend (I.e. myself) ended up turning on him in a moment of weakness. He died by his own hand, choking to death on his own lungs after swallowing a gallon of toxic chemicals. Yet despite all of that he believed, he pointed to Christ when he was still here. Yet I was too blinded by blood frenzy to see. Everyone in this world failed him, even I failed him much to my shame, but I loved him as if he were my brother. I pray for him every single time I attend mass because I can only hope that God wouldn’t leave him behind.

I always get a 30 day Gregorian Mass cycle said for them in hopes of the promises attached. Also the Diary of Faustina clearly states that the Chaplet Must be said in the presence of the Dead or Dying for the promise of salvation attached. They added alot outside of the specific Diary to the Devotion. I try to stick with the actual words and directives from the mouth of Christ in the Diary. Not saying its not good but just sayin

I don’t know if this is the right place for this question but I’m gonna ask anyways: my parents were once Catholic, fell away from the church, then fell away from Christianity as a whole. My mother claims she has Jewish blood and both my parents are now practicing Jews. This has troubled me for a long time, as I fear for their souls. I’ve consulted a few different priests for advice on what I can do for them, what I can say, besides of course praying for them. The only response I’ve been able to get is along the lines of “the Jews are Gods chosen people. Don’t worry too much.” This answer has bothered me. Jews do not get a special ticket to the Father. The last time I checked the only way to the Father is through Christ. The only way to salvation is through Christ. What am I missing here?

Well, the Jews were the chosen people but they rejected christ and they were cut off and we were grafted in. Thats what the bible says. No Jews do not get a pass because theyre jews. Saint Paul said, do not feel superior to the Jews, they were Gods first born and he did not reject them, they rejected him and he never changes his mind. God has a plan for them in the future, they will return. We pray for our families and show Jesus is the one by our lives. A prayer that never ceases, even when there seems there's no hope will not be ignored. Better a good Jew than a cold self righteous christian
@jmj5388

Take comfort in the words of Our Lord to St. Faustina about the “three calls”. If your parents never come around during their lifetimes, there will still be an opportunity for them to respond to God’s Grace, which they should readily recognize since they were once Catholic. My father died yesterday, several states away. A long-lapsed Catholic, he had become involved in the church of his Protestant wife. In recent years, he developed a nostalgic longing for Catholic traditions and music of the Latin Mass, started visiting a Catholic Church and took Communion an unknown number of times. It has probably been 60 years since he had been to Confession, though, and I was deeply concerned for his soul. His Protestant wife, a disbeliever in Purgatory, did not see the need for Last Rites, but she finally relented, and a priest got to him just a few hours before my dad passed. Since I do not know whether or not the Apostolic Pardon I’d requested was prayed over him, I am having a series of Gregorian Masses said for him. So, there are various prayers and devotions from which a deceased person can benefit, and God is not limited by time or space. If the deceased person is already in Heaven, Masses and other offerings can raise them up further (or so I’ve been given to understand), and they can be transferred to other, needy souls.

And about baptism for the dead, Paul only uses that to prove the resurrection of souls. As he quotes non-Christians to give an understanding of Jesus. He doesn't talk about the validity of the practice, or say that we, Christians, do this.

For example, we pray for the spiritually dead, but we cannot save one hair on any of their heads. Only the lord can. So too, with those who are physically dead. Paul is clearly refering to a christian practice which he does not condemn. We know this because the early church fathers say that the baptism of the dead was a practice of extreme penance for the souls in what is now called Purgatory. You can study the bible and let history and tradition tell you what it means and come to the truth, or, you can listen to your Protestant pastor explain the obvious away to protect their erroneous doctrines

@@imisschristendom5293 if there is no afterlife with souls therein, why do people seek ways to speak to those who have passed via mediums and others? Does this prove the validity of mediums to you? Or if there are no miracles, why do people pay attention to so called miracle workers? Does this prove the validity of all who claim to be miracle workers? If tongues have ceased, what about the likes of William Seymour? Does this credit William Seymour to you? But I do say, there are miracles, an afterlife, and tongues have not ceased. Paul says that the practice is practically useless, instead of useless idea-wise, to prove that the resurrection exists. That is my point. I do agree with you that he does not condemn it. Luther disagreed with praying for the dead and he was a priest and that coursed the first split with the church. How about an even simpler option. If the pope has the power to free the souls from purgatory, why doesn't he just do so out of love for the souls there rather than make people do indulgences? Or why even pray for the souls in purgatory if they're just going to get into Heaven anyway and a temporary suffering is nothing compared to eternity.
@contemplatingchrist
@contemplatingchrist 7 месяцев назад
Indulgences are awesome!! Some modern people indulge in sweets & video games, but Christians get to indulge in God's sweet mercy, His everlasting love. Indulgences are prayers, alms, love... the byproduct is while you're encouraged to pray to indulge in God's mercy for other people's debts or your own, you too are sanctified.

@contemplatingchrist Sounds more like Simony to me. Pay money to release your tormented relative from purgatory even though I as the pope can do it without needing your indulgences or should I say extortions. Luckily, Purgatory is a heresy that spawned out of the Middle Ages and what John Chrysostom mentions in praying for the dead has nothing to do with residual punishment for sins that are already forgiven.
