This is my 1960-something Dodge D100 with a sweet utility bed! I've affectionately named it Lunch Box for obvious reasons, and I can't help but love how sweet this old truck looks! Think we can bring it back from the dead? Stick around to the end of the video to find out!

When I was a senior in high school the John Deere dealer in our little town has a Dodge truck like the one you are showing. It was a beautiful black truck, loaded with about every accessory that Mopar could put on it. The John Deere dealer very could keep from hopping up anything he got his hands on. His tractors won every tractor pull in the state and, of course, that carried over to the pickup. It had a 413 with dual quads with a 727 behind it and put it to the road with a 3.90 rear end. He shut down so many Chevelles, Novas, Mustangs, Torinos, etc. The damn thing was a legend and I never saw it bested in a drag race.

Nice find Dylan. This is one to fix and clean up. Forget patina, paint it, put in a bench seat and carpet. Fix the damn heater. You’re not in Florida. It is a cool blank canvas. Fix everything and showcase your talents. Perfect to haul trailered vehicles to events. Just too cool to look like a rat rod fail. Have fun, stay safe.

Bought a '58 Ford 100 for $200, had her running in a week, 6 cylinder, 3 speed, rust free in Nor Cal. I'm so glad to see you young guns saving these rigs too! These bargains are still out there folks, so get one, tear into it and LEARN ! You get so much more than wheels, you get self reliance and confidence in yourself, God knows we can all use that no matter what age we are, I'm 50 and have always loved this stuff good on y'all in the midwest for keeping it going too! 🇺🇸

I love the old truck man. That thing is so cool. Mobile revival rig would be awesome. Please don’t drop it, I’ve always felt like it takes away it being what a truck is meant to be. That and everybody is doing it nowadays, now, a little lift with some mud tires on steelies with hub caps and chrome trim rings would be way McCooler.

Knowing this is a Slant Six truck, I knew it would start right up and it idles as smooth as I thought, me and my dad have a '62 D100 turned into an RV with a 225 Slant Six mated to a ZF-4 Speed manual and it runs and drives so smoothly, hell it still has the bean can looking starter underneath, Dylan I must say you have a really good shop truck with this D100, the Slant is quite tough to kill.

My dad was a welder for an oil well service company in East Texas back in the mid to late 1960s. His truck was an old 65-67 (I was 12 or 13, and they all looked alike to me) Dodge 3/4 ton. It was a truck, wouldn’t outrun its own shadow, but it was faithful. This video brings back great memories of a time and a man long passed, but thank you for sharing this

The 68 D300 behind me , I owned for 34 years. Here's a few tips for your truck. If you install a new cowl panel, close the vents with fiberglass; that's the main reason for rotted floors. My 68 came with the Bendix power brake booster with a dual circuit master cylinder. The booster mounted to the firewall using 4 inch stand off brackets. The 68 hood looks really cool, sitting over a 71 chrome grill. When the clutch slave cylinder blows, and yes, it will, I simply filled the reservoir with lightweight motor oil, and it ran for years. The \6 from the 60s, regardless of car or truck, were all built to medium-duty truck specs, so yes, 300,000 was not a problem. If you want to beef up the chassis, the D200 and D300 front axle and suspension is a direct swap. The D/W200 rear axle and suspension will swap, but verify the same ujoint. The 300 has a narrower frame, so there would be spring mount fabwork. An upgrade for the 11" clutch would be to swap the 2800# pressure plate for the 4000# plate from the D300.

A blast from the past! This is what I bought so my mom could teach me to drive (in 1981). She didn't want me learning in her car. (Smart one) The minor differences are the tool box was replaced with 3/4 plywood and no stick, but a fancy push-button automatic. It even had the same half-moons on the windshield from broken wipers.

Grill, bumper and some dog dish caps and you’ll be stylin’. Never been much of a MOPAR guy, but I gained some respect for those slant six’s years ago. I worked at a service station circa 1972, and a guy used to come in with a ‘62 Valiant (a ten year old car was considered OLD in those days). It had a rod knock and burned a quart of oil a day. We sold him drain oil at 10 cents a quart. He drove it forever like that. He’d stop in every two days and rev the hell out of it when he was leaving to fog up our drive. A decade later during the coldest Wisconsin morning I can remember, (-21 and a -80 wind chill), I flooded my ‘64 Impala. The only thing starting was my buddy’s ‘69 Dart slant six. Never mind it was worn out and had reduced compression, but it became the day’s rescue vehicle. (His 340 Dart wouldn’t go either) Spent the rest of the day jumping people

Great video! The part " she's stopping, she's still running" made me lol. I remember those drum brake and manual choke carb days. It's sad but 99% of the younger crowd will never know nothing about all that fun stuff lol. Fuel injection and four wheel disc are nice, but the old stuff got the job done back then.

I love the name Lunch Box. My grandpa had a 79 F100 with the 302 and a 4 speed. He did construction so he drove that truck everywhere. When he sold it it was still in great shape and had 330,000 miles on it and all that had ever been done was basic maintenance. These old trucks sure can last a long time. I hope we get more content with Lunch Box

Kind of nice to see one come back without 100 cascading problems! My dad won the bids for two Dodge trucks (a '65 and a '60 or 62) in a California Caltrans vehicle auction back in the late 60s. Both were bright orange. He resold the earlier one and repainted the '65 to a dark green with white top. Slant six, automatic with shifter on the dash. Drove that truck for years. The cab sounded hollow, like riding in an oil drum, but overall a nice truck. Really appreciate the great video. Brings back good memories.

A couple of things come to mind here: - when you are traveling along and your engine fails, just leave it in the last gear you were in - or drop down one, then being your clutch pedal up and you will keep driving.... We call it a bump-start. Secondly, your "tick-over. Issues could be distributer related. (Which would also lead to the engine slowing and stopping)... Just a thought or two having had only manual vehicles - and lots of 'em - in my 72 years.... All the best! 🤓

You have the PERFECT ‘Will It Run?’ service truck. A couple air tanks with a 12 volt compressor to inflate tires, 2 - 1,000 amp batteries to boost (get them cheap from a semi truck parts store), some Jerry cans of gas, some tools , jacks, I’d suggest a winch on the front to pull vehicles out of the bush and to finish it off have McCool’s Garage painted on the doors. Awesome. Maybe find an old CB as well just for that period correct touch. All the best to you.

Great truck, great video! I like it when you don't have to fight it to run. My two cents - drop it down, low, keep the cab color, match paint the utility bed, but wheathered a bit. Fit a grill and bumper, preferrably a different year from the other parts. Add a "Roadstorator" logo on the box sides, a "Lunchbox" signature with a small pinstripe motif on the rear box one side, and "Col 3:17" and the pinstripe motif on the other side rear. And, if you can find them, 1953 Dodge truck moon caps, slightly beat-up.

You had me at 'truck', knowing it would be a fine old Dodge. :-) Gotta love it. I've had three Sweptlines, a '67 I drove in high school, then a '65 and now a '70 Camper Special. The '67 was a slant six with three on the tree, the other two both 4-speed granny's, poly 318 in the '65 and LA 318 in the '70. I like the front end best on the dual headlights of the mid-65 and earlier, least on the late-65 to 67 with the round orange blinkers. But you need to pick a grill, if only so we know what Lunchbox identifies as. ;-) My only concern for you would be if ol' Rumpkin gets jealous.

I absolutely love that old Dodge! They are so beautifully simple, you've got to work hard to kill one. I had a 69 D 100, no telling how many miles it had. There were faded signs on both doors that read Carol County Cattle Co. That hood and fender wells are great, it was designed for easy maintenance by the owner. Mine was red, the top was black, not sure if it came from the factory that way. Her name was Awful, that's the first thing I said when I saw her. She had so much rust that going down the road the bed sides wobbled so much often times the tailgate would flop open. I think the only thing that held the truck in one piece was the fifth wheel hitch that was homemade with an inch thick piece of steel welded frame rail to frame rail under the bed. Everyone made fun of Awful, but on a very cold day when nothing else would start, yep, Awful cranked right up. She was one of the family. I cried when the day came we sold her.

Hi Dylon, another great find.. OK milages on vehicles, I once had an English Ford Sierra 4 door lift back (hatchback) saloon used as a "Minicab" (unlicensed Taxi) that I serviced every 5000 miles but sold it running perfectly with 300.000 miles on the odometer.. Was known locally as being a very reliable car, so when I put it up for sale outside my back then home a half hour later a fellow Minicab Driver bought it no questions asked/ the oil changes kept the engine fresh plus once started each night on its all-night shift I rarely turned the engine off, aiming for 300 miles per night.. Keep the engines happy and they last forever It seems. - Anyway, thanks for the Video - Ian - UK.

I absolutely love this truck!!! I would love to have one like this for my new handyman, yard structure, lawn furniture business. How cool this would be with some pin-striping and business logo on the door. So jealous.

As soon as you mentioned slamming it I remembered there is a custom frame shop that did this to their shop truck it was a square body with a utility bed and a ladder rack, Which made it even more functional because they used it to transport welded frames back-and-forth on top of the truck so it made it easier to pick it up and drop it on there... And it served as a rolling advertisement for their skills because this thing was laying less than frame

That leaning tower of power is probably good for another 300 k. Great little truck. But the laugh after you found out the horn works told me just how much fun you were having.

Solid example of a Sweptline! I like the utility bed as well, would look very cool on the ground like you mentioned. My dad and I are building a 69' D200 crew cab right now.

I've never in my life seen a speedometer arrow that goes all over the place like that. 😂🤣👍

Yep, it's a slant. It's just purring away, ready for another 300,000 miles with a new/rebuilt carb and manifold. I'd probably search out a Super Six for her to replace the 1 barrel. If not a hyperpack repro. I've used that tank weld to get a dump truck off the yard when the driver ripped open their tank on our scale's side beams (two girders that run along each side of the scale). They came back a couple months later with it still going, so it lasted at least that long.
