The 70 year Old Wagon Wheel Cafe sign has been hanging on the side of the historic restaurant building for 70 years. The only problem is that the Wagon Wheel Cafe closed down 14 years ago and has been KJ's Cafe ever since. The owner finally decided to sell the sign to some antique pickers who are going to restore it. My friend John invited me down to film the process and show you guys the process. Check out John's instagram at @acmespeedshop

That is so cool. My dad was a neon tube bender (that is what they were called). He went to a neon builder school in Chicago after he got out of the Air Force after WWII. That is where he met my mom. So he worked in the industry creating neon glass art signs from the late 1940s through the 80s. I love watching him work his magic on the neon tube torches. This brought back memories of me working with him during summers installing and repairing neon signs. Loved this project. Peace.

That was really cool. and sad. I'm 59 with only 3 months left of my 50's. These kinds of signs were new when I was young. Now, like me, they are not. It's great to see that people are interested in restoration instead of demolition. Thank you for sharing. Cheers

Brings back a few memories. I and the wife would make a motorcycle trip out of California to Canada every couple of years. Not being a fan of I5, we would either take the coastal route or highway 97. We spent the night a few times there and ate at the Wheel Cafe more than once. I am getting a bit old to do that anymore but your videos of the area are a good reminder of those trips.

Thank you for sharing! This is bitter sweet and glad you documented the next step in the unique signs’ long life. We were so disappointed when it no longer shined like a beacon, announcing you made it to Chemult. More disappointment when the truck stop took over the old little town, and swallowed up the signs’ dominance. Thank you to all involved in saving this iconic sign.

I would love to see this sign once it's restored. I was raised in this restaurant. The long-time owners were my second family, and my grandmother and my mother worked there while I was growing up, and as soon as I was old enough, so did I. I haven't been able to bring myself to step foot inside since they sold it in the early 2000's, but that restaurant is as much of a home to me as any house. It is the 'restaurant' that built me 💗

I love those old Neon signs. As a kid, -50's and 60's - I loved the characters and especially the flashing arrows. The stop offs, gas stations and food outlets in the Fraser Canyon (Fraser River BC) used to have them along the highway. My parents would try to drive the canyon at night so we could see the flashing gold miners and donkeys along the way. Now every last one of them are gone and the highway seems lonesome and deserted. However, many fond memories do I have.

Very Cool video Casey. I know a guy who has been in the sign & vehicle pinstriping industry for many years. "The King of Paint", in the metro Milwaukee area. Though he doesn't do the Neon stuff, he does some amazing hand done artistry. Sadly, these days with all of the computerization of manufacturing, there tends to be far less of the old hand made work. These kinds of "old school" signs are very sought after. Glad t see you were there to help document some of the history for these folks.

Casey my Dad, his dad and my dads Uncle all worked in the sign business. My great uncle and Grandpa worked for Oregon signs and the My grey uncle formed Oregon Coast Neon and signs. My dad worked for Carlson Signs and then his own shop Scott’s signs. My dad worked on that sign and many of the signs back in the 1980’s. Unfortunately all have passed. My dad left a pocket knife on that sign that I gave him for Christmas one year. He knew he’d lost it but wasn’t sure where. The next year he went to service it was sitting right by that wiring access panel where he’s inadvertently left it. An update on the restoration would be great. Thanks for the story!
