Can We Shave Beards? - 119 Ministries

Some Jews shave their beards, and some do not. Both supposedly follow Torah, but clearly apply a differing understanding. If we believe the whole Word of God to be true, instead of just some of it, then we certainly need to test everything, including whether or not we can shave our beards.

My father-in-law attends an Apostolic Pentecostal church, although he’s not Apostolic. He wanted to help be an usher, but they wouldn’t let him become he had a beard! Any man that has a position in the church had to be clean shaven. But they thought it was ok to have a beard if you didn’t have a position. I asked one of the women who attends there why they believe that. And she said that they want everyone to have a uniform look. They wanted them to look the same if they have a position in the church. I don’t remember reading that anywhere in the Bible

I’ve been in a church like that too, although the lines were drawn on different issues - but the result is the same. Any group that teaches all Christians must have beards or not have beards, dress a certain way, listen/not listen to certain music, eat/not eat, etc., are denying the New Testament doctrine of Christian liberty, where we make choices before God in our individual conscience (Romans 14:4-6); and this abrogation of the believer’s personal convictions is how cults start

@@rowanmarc I currently attend a Pentecostal church and I understand where you’re coming from but it’s common knowledge that every church has different rules and convictions so if you are someone who wishes to attend that church, Romans 13:1 says to submit yourself to that church of which God has established, if you have different convictions there’s no issue, however if you wish to be a part of a ministry at that church you will have to follow the formalities that they uphold. Questioning the church will just waste time and also is a rebellious attitude, it’s best to find a church with ofc fundamental laws and beliefs as a Christian should have but also fits your convictions. However I’d be lying if there weren’t things that the church rules that I find a bit iffy, such as going to the movie theater. Since our bodies are not ours rather the body of Christ which means we should be weary of what we put in to our bodies, however wouldn’t that mean that movies as a whole should not be seen, I understand it but it’s like saying going to a burger place is bad but eating burgers at home is fine.😂 but God Bless you💙

Why didn’t David say just shave the other half of your beard and come into the camp? He did not say that. Therefore, I believe it is expected that men allow the hair on there face grow wether full or sparse simply because it distinguishes us from women. When people ask - is it a commandment that men have beards, I say, not specifically, but I have a beard simply because I am a man, and the scriptures make it absolute clear, men are not to look like women and women are not to look like men. AND since a beard is the PRIMARY distinguishing exposed feature of a man that sets them apart from women, I believe it is implied that we should not shave our faces! I think scripturally the case is clear, we should not generally shave our face. Just like it is a shame for a woman to shave her head but when a foreign woman was taken in captivity and an Israelite man wants to take her for a wife, she is to shave her hair. The same holds true for a Nazarite vow. It seems that shaving the head for the captive woman and shaving head and face for men in a Nazerite vow, symbolizes removal of what was in the past and newness from thence forward! That is in my opinion a better explanation of all texts involved. Lastly, although some men say they can not grow a beard, all men grow hair on there face. Therefore we all should allow that masculine distinguishing feature to shine, regardless of how full or how sparse, ESPECIALLY in todays day and age.

* I believe that you omitted from this teaching - God's command to Aaron & his descendants who would be performing the duties of his High Priest or a Priest before him - not to shave the edges of their beards (in Lev. 21:5). For Aaron or any of his descendants who became Priests at the Tabernacle or at the Temple - to shave their beards would have gone against the instructions of God. So - if God required his Priests to grow beards & they were the closest human beings to draw near to God - how much more would the common man also want to do the same - since this is what God wanted & required. Consider this > that many of the examples set forth by God for those who were closest to him - were also for the purpose of being followed by all the common people as well. If a common man could live his life just as a High Priest lived his life - would the common man not be pleasing to God? His efforts to copy or follow God's instructions shows his willingness to please God - even though he not required to do so as a common man. And to exert the effort shows a persons devotion & faith.

Hmm... Maybe. But if it was just for priests I don't think common people would emulate that necessarily. They obviously wouldn't wear the priestly turban or the breastplate for instance. And only the high priest could wear mixed cloth (flax and wool). I think the beards were meant to set the people apart, because many Jews who were not priests have beards now and have had beards throughout history (David, Jesus [priest by order of Melchizedek but not a Levite])

I disagree. That's a speculative decleration. For you do not consider men who are created that cannot grow any facial hair. Hair or not, there is no torah law that tells us not to shave our beard, let alone tell us that we shouldn't keep it clean and trimmed. There is no such law 📜

@@noahdevane3761 The context of that is found in other places in the Bible. As a Biblically Curious person, I found this very interesting. I know some religions forbid having facial hair, and I always thought this was contrary to this scripture. Most Bible translations refer to the marring of edge of the beard. So my thought has always been that we should have a beard, but we are allowed to trim it, as long as we do not change its natural shape. BTW, which Bible are you quoting from?

I endorse the notion of choosing a haircut that suits your personal style, as long as it doesn't entail mimicking unbelievers, idolizing false deities, or paying homage to the deceased. It's a clear principle not to shave your beard; even David, for instance, didn't command his men to shave their beards; instead, he permitted them to let their beards flourish. This is why it advises against rounding off the corners of your head, but it specifically instructs not to damage the beard. The main focus on obeying God though is to be set apart from the world. This is to show us that God cares about every little part of our life for he loves us!

His name is Yehovah according to the most ancient scrolls. The Rabbis did omit the vowels so the Hebrews would not speak his name because punishable by death from their captors and overlords. His son is Yeshua ( meaning there is salvation in Yehovah ). There is no “Jesus”in Hebrew. It’s a poor translation of the Greek (Iésous) I used to ride with clubs and it’s highly important to know a mans name. How much more so to know our creators name and the son he sent to correct the Hebrews defaulting on their part of that covenant of the Ten Commandments, and in turn saving us gentiles. He only asked us to follow the 10. The fourth being to keep the Shabbat ( sabbath )set apart from the first 6 days. Friday sunset to Saturday sunset. He can’t bless most people because of their disobedience to this one instruction. Most of our blessings are only from his goodness and mercy. Imagine how much more he would do if we were obedient children? And he’s not “Lord” that’s a term used for Bael. “Do not place any other god before me” so people call on “lord”? You have not because you ask not. So act accordingly ask correctly and see what happens. He wants to bless us so much the chosen people would be jealous. I haven’t seen that yet, have you?

@servantofyahuwah2486
@servantofyahuwah2486 3 года назад
The Bible is clear. Shaving is a SIN, David's men were embarrassed because they had the visual evidence of a sin on their face. And yes, even when a person is shaved by force a sin was committed. It is just like committing adultery is a sin. When a married woman is raped. The woman feels ashamed. Because she ended up being defiled even though it was against her will. Likewise when King David's men were shaved by force, they likewise were ashamed because they were defiled against their will. It is not in the same way as rape, but in both cases they are being defiled into a breaking of God's LAWs. Now I will say a woman is not responsible for a rape if it is truly rape, and likewise a man is not responsible if someone shaves him against his will. But a woman is responsible if she willingly commits adultery. Likewise a man who shaves his face is responsible before God. Christ our example did not shave. Because he did not commit SIN. Your teaching is false. The only acceptable time for a man to shave is if he was cured of leprosy, or been in contact with a dead body where they might have had a contagious disease. This is because if a person had leprosy for example their would be traces of the leprosy in the hair while it was growing. The only other exception was when a vow was completed. Which would only happen on rare occasion. You should be ashamed of promoting breaking God's LAWS. You are no better than a person promoting Sunday as a replacement for God's Sabbath. Today every spiritual leader is promoting breaking the LAWS of God including you.

I don’t really agree with it I do think it has to do with not being like pagans in some degree but his example of David and the spies with half their beards cut was a weak argument to me. They were captured and forced to shave they did not commit a sin they were ashamed because of the cultural and religious beliefs held about beards which is why I believe David showed compassion and told them to grow it in Jericho away from the city. I also think that it’s not contradictory to say not to shave your head and then shave it for a nazarite vow the reason I don’t believe it is a contradiction is because one is consecration to God and one is not much like the Golden calf in exodus God detests it and graven images yet I believe it was king Solomon who made 12 Golden calf’s as an offering to God and he was pleased by it. Showing their is a clear difference in what is sin in Gods eyes or like lying God hates a lying tongue however when the Egyptian midwives helped the Hebrew woman give birth they lied to pharaoh and God blessed them for it or the spies and the prostitute she lied about the spies and God blessed her. So I kinda think since it was a well known cultural practice even in Yeshuas day to have long beards and hair that it most likely was seen as a law not pertaining to the violent cutting of hair during mourning.

The ritual Law was given to ISRAEL: so if you’re not Jewish, how are you honouring the Bible by taking on something that was not given to you? Stating that you “believe the whole Bible Bible is true,” is creating a false dichotomy where u implicitly claim those who don’t agree with your interpretation do not believe the Bible to be all Divinely inspired. The fact is, by taking on commandments not given to you and claiming everything applies to everyone all the way through, you actually DISHONOUR the Law, whose purpose is to prove that we are sinners (Romans 7), and to keep the Jewish people distinct from the nations (Exodus 19:5-6, Deuteronomy 4:5-7). Not only this, but you can’t just pick and choose which commandments you like - Galatians 5:3 says that if you wish to be circumcised (under the Law), you are a debtor to do the whole Law. This means you should be making sin offerings as well, going up to Jerusalem 3 times a year, and making war against Amalek - and I know for a fact you’re not doing any of those three things, so if we were still under the Law, you would be accursed by God as a Law breaker.

I have a message that I’m sharing where I can, some may not want to hear this, but I ask that we stay polite and seek truth together. 😊 Love is an action. Feed the hungry, house the homeless, father the orphan, and protect the defenseless and vulnerable. Read the Word for yourself, not only relying on others for guidance. Pray for guidance.Yahushua/Yeshua - His Hebrew name who is usually called (Jesus) taught to keep the whole Word. Including the Law/Torah. Matthew 5:17 “Do not presume that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not [g]the smallest letter or stroke of a letter shall pass from the Law, until all is accomplished! 19 Therefore, whoever nullifies one of the least of these commandments, and teaches [h]others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever [i]keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." Read 1 John. John tells us that sin is lawlessness, and that we must keep the commandments. Trust in the atonement of Yahushua/Yeshua who is usually called Jesus, and keep God (YHWH)'s whole Word/commandments. Revelation 12:17 So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. Revelation 14:12 Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus. Go to parableofthevineyard youtube channel for information about the bible and good bible studies. I'm in no way paid or sent by him for advertising. I just have learned a lot from his content. He's just a man who is trying to learn as well. :) Yeshua died so we may be resurrected to eternal life.....

To grow a beard isn’t the commandment, it’s don’t cut the beard. God say not to do thing, as humans we always have to do things. So it’s not you must grow a beard it is don’t cut the hair growing out of your face, there’s a difference.

I disagree with both axioms. The Bible was written over the centuries for contemporary hearers, not for the 21st Century; and it is quite plain that much of the Bible is NOT literlly true. St John's Revelation is NOT literally true; it is a description of the undescribable. The story of Noah's Ark is sourced from the writings of Gilgamesh in Mesopotamia; did they describe the same Flood? The only description of Cristianity I accept is the one Jesus gave, "I was sick or in prison and you visited me." Not just talk from millennia ago. But these preachers deliberately ignore anything Jesus said; they prefer to quote Genesis.

it would have been easier to just tell the men to shave the other half of their face and come in.. but David went the more difficult route, which is to tell them to wait until their beards grew again, this indicates the importance of the beard above and beyond the much easier alternative... in context with everything else, the beard is the DEFINING MALE CHARACTERISTIC that Yahweh wants us to carry and denying this logic is highly problematic. The Nazarite promise is within an exceptional context, not a normative one.

The world is going to hell in a handbasket because almost everyone is breaking almost every law God ever made. Most are committing dozens of sins per day . Shaving is only one daily sin being committed by most.
