Can We Shop at Pro-Abortion Companies?

Many companies these days use their profits to support abortions (and other affronts to the human person). Knowing this, can we use their products without participating in evil?

He also said that all big businesses are engaged with some level of evil. The same principle of moral theology would be applied to voting pro-abortion candidate or taking vaccine from aborted fetus. If we ever get our countries back, we need a dedicated Catholic Religious Morality Police Force in Catholic countries to rigidly enforce the traditional teachings of the Catholic Church - Muslims pray 5 times a day facing Mecca, they have Islamic Sharia law, they have Arabic as their common shared prayer language - we Catholics need to do similar, along military principles, we should be facing towards Rome when we pray 5 times a day, Latin should be our common prayer language and we need to re-codify Canon Law & Catholic Social Teachings via the Holy Office of the Inquisition - there must never again be any separation between Church & State, which has led to all of these problems

Thanks for this. I have a followup question: To what extent are we responsible for investigating whether companies we buy from are complicit in evil? I know someone who struggles with scrupulosity around this. Given the immense complexity of large corporations and all their parent companies and subsidiaries, you can easily go down a serious rabbit hole trying to find ALL the possible exploitative and immoral practices your money might be supporting as a consumer.
@BreakingInTheHabit
@BreakingInTheHabit 4 месяца назад
Because any participation with a company is likely remote cooperation with evil, and because there are ultimately no perfect companies, it would be unfair to expect people to investigate every single company. We should try our best and challenge evil when we see it, but we can’t be held responsible for their evil.

This was also a question that I had. I am anti-abortion/pro-life. I have two grocery stores near me: Vons (Safeway) and Ralphs (Kroger). Ralphs gives travel expenses for those wanting abortion, Safeway doesn't. Let's play devil's advocate for a moment. Let's say that both stores (highly unlikely but let's humor me) buy apples from the same farmer/producer and that the farmer/producer supports abortion. So do we stop buying apples? I know Father Casey answered it above (thanks, Father) but it's still something to think about.

I for one, believe that the climate is changing, but it is a natural change. I love our planet, and I love the beautiful nature that God has given us, however I’m firmly against the climate change agenda. The reason is that nearly every idea pushed by the climate change groups is extremely anti-life. If you listen to the complaints in regard to climate change, you’ll notice that the blame is always placed on people. “There’s too many people!” And so governments incentivize behaviours to kill off people. They tell us that having children is bad for the planet, that living in rural areas is bad, we have to pay taxes to save the planet, it’s all very anti-life. It’s important to respect the planet that God created, but we have to be weary of what we support when we talk about “climate change”, as most of the solutions to this supposed problem is killing off people.

I always got a bad feeling seeing or hearing about the amarican debate abaut abortion. First because it looks so much like double standard form me - America is one of the western countrys with the most death due to shootings and gun voilence, still got death penalty in many states, all of the five worldwide-biggest arms manufacturer siting in the US, or the handling of refugees. No of this is PRO Life, but there is somehow never talked about when it's about "pro-life" marches or else. Also like how little is the suport for young mothers and familys in the US, how big of an economcal risk for many woman in the US is it to get a child - something that is totally unreproducible form a german perspective across the ocean. It also is represented in the reasons young woman lists most when they get asked why they decide to take an abortion. A country so wealthy like the US doing so little for the people who needs thier suport - even in their own country - is something I'm not able to understand. As catholics we should stand on the side of the weak and suport them in their decision making "pro life" and not condemn them for the bad decision - THAT would realy save the life of babys and mothers. That would totally chance the discussion form "against each other" to "with each other". Isn't it love Christ calls us to and not condemnation? Who am I to tell a woman she have to be a mother to go through something I never have to experience? But I may be able to suport her to get to be a mother who sees herself able to bring a child to the world and care for it.
@valliels2808
@valliels2808 4 месяца назад
Spot on - The US is a crazy place. Most Catholics/Protestants don't really care about the child after it's born - meaning, they are more "pro-birth" than "pro-life". After the child is born, the refrain is pretty much, "Raise it yourself, we're not here to support you or provide you with social services - unless it's thoughts and prayers!" And we all know thoughts and prayers are about as useful as air guitar strings. The title of this video is even misleading - no one is "pro-abortion". We are "pro-choice" - meaning that a woman should have the right to choose what she does with her body and whether or not she gives birth. Abortion is an incredibly difficult choice to make (fortunately, I've not had to make that decision, but I know plenty of people who have) - no one wakes up saying, "Yay! Time for that abortion I've been wanting for so long!" Christ calls us to love everyone, judge no one, and tells us that God will judge us. I'm content to do my thing and let others do their thing because, ultimately, it's not my business. People who have abortions are not sinning - they are doing what's best for them and their life, and since I know nothing about that person's life, it's not my place to render any judgement about it.

I like the way Fr. Casey explained how our patronage speaks for us, and abstaining from purchasing also has power. I believe there is another even more powerful choice- switch your buying over to companies and people who make good product AND empower your beliefs and values. I get that in a fallen world Christians may need to stave off or eliminate completely to make sure what they do and support reflects their beliefs and values. But how much more powerful could it be when those same Christians SWITCHED their buying habits to companies that reflect their values from the companies that don't respect theirs. That's pulling weeds and planting seeds in this garden of a world we've been given to take care of.

The benefit of a healthy Capitalist state is that many businesses are in direct competition for your dollar. You as the consumer can state your Social, Moral or ethical boundaries by how you spend your money. If you don't like that a bakery is not willing to cater to a gay wedding, then you go someplace else and perhaps even tell others that that bakery will not cater to Gay weddings. You are still responsible for your own moral choice in not lying about why you don't patron that business, and if you're not moral enough to not lie, perhaps that is the issue you need to think on rather than someone else's perceived failings. So, the Morality of it is quite clear, if you value your morals and ethics you stand by them or you don't. Its not boycotting if you just choose to not be a patron of theirs and if asked you tell others why truthfully. Its just being personally responsible for your own integrity.

i do not think that we should be supporting organization who take no shame in the unjust killing of an unborn child. it was Aristotle who once said, and the Catholic Catechism again restates, that "An unexamined life is not worth living". if we as Catholic are to blind to the things these people support in their stores during this woke time in the world, then we are probably blind to other, maybe even worse things that they can be supporting. The reason we are Catholic is to follow the way of life which God intended us to walk in, and now were walking into stores stores and buying their products without knowing what path they chose to walk in? i will never as a Catholic support stores who promote such evil ideology. GODSPEED

What can we do? The list is so long. How can we live without Microsoft, Apple, Amazon , Walmart, Chase credit card? They all fund with travel expenses or plan parenthood. I have iPhone , my provider is Verizon and my card is Chase and Amazon Prime. Father what can I do. 😭😩. It is so sad.

I think this is a good way to look at it. I also think the idea of "rendering unto ceaser what is ceaser's" kind of applies to some extent in this situation. Obviously Ceaser was not a blameless man, and I imagine worshipped Roman pagan god's among other evil things. However, the people of the time may or may not have been in support of these actions, but it didn't matter because it was necessary to pay taxes. Now is it as necessary to buy Nike shoes as it is to pay taxes? No, obviously not, so it's not a perfect comparison, but I do think it shows that monetarily supporting evil indirectly and without the intention of doing so shouldn't be a huge concern morally. That being said, if there is an alternative available, especially one that is relatively equivalent, it would probably be worth it to support an alternative that doesn't support abortion.

Id also add that debt free living is a great supplement to these crises of conscience. I no longer care about my guilt over Bank of America's potential political agenda because I'm not shoveling them 4k a year in interest. Their political spending is of no more concern to me than how my neighbor votes

What's especially galling about companies that offer to pay for employees' travel and procedures for abortions is that they are not offering these same employees money to have children. Any employer who will fund your abortion but not your family is no ally.

I haven’t read through all these questions but I’m troubled with the fact that our current President calls himself a Catholic, yet the church continues to allow him to participate and receive communion, and he approves abortion, even late term abortion. This also includes the former speaker of the house. Please, help me understand this.

There is no apartheid in Israel, Arab Israeli citizens can be doctors, police officers and even soldiers. About 20% of the Israeli population is Arab and even 8/120 Knesset members are Arab. There are more restrictions on what Palestinians can do in Lebanon than there is in Israel, if you don’t believe me look it up.

Does this analysis also apply to evil done by a government using funds you pay in taxes? And since paying taxes is obligatory (unlike purchasing a consumer goods), does that change our responsibility to work for positive change? Arms sales, subsidies to harmful industries, etc. come to mind.

Yes. The Catholic Church teaches that even if we have some connection with pro-abortion group/company or we buy, use and eat their product or we pay taxes to our government that support abortion, we still do not sin if our cooperation is only remote. If we can avoid some of them, then, we should as much as we can and as much as possible and if there are other better options or alternatives, we should prefer them.

The sacrifice sometimes can be too demanding. I guess besides voting with our tax dollars (which is sometimes the easiest thing to do), we must reach out to our youngsters in our parishes; be it our kids or the that of our neighbours or catholic community kids. We need to talk to them educate them about the sanctity of life. It is a long long road, but then we must go on that road because when things started going south we were ignorant of it.

Leaving aside the question of abortion, I appreciate this video because it deals with probably the most basic moral question most of us will ever be confronted with: To what extent are we responsible for the evil we make possible simply by participating in more than a subsistance economy. From Chinese forced labor to Israeli apartheid, how can we avoid adding to human misery? And what must the good man do when his government forces him - under threat of imprisonment - to hand over the fruits of his labor to pay for executions, unjust war, and bombing civilians?

This is a big reason why Consequentialism as a moral system falls apart, as adeptly explored in the TV show, The Good Place. At some point, Intentionalism has to play a part for morality to have any chance of working.

Thank you for the clarification and these concise steps. I wonder how this may relate to structural sin. These companies can support abortions because people don’t care. If there’s not an individual sin, may there be a structural sin? And isn’t that really irrelevant to the individual?

This seems litigious. With some not having access to good things like fresh produce and affordable resources but a place to shop that's known to do evil..I understand. Or if we do or buy things in ignorance, then find out after fact we've been supporting evil this whole time.. But I wonder if we're overexplaining a sin. I like what you said at the end, though. We Can do without some *things*. 💙👍🏻

If God himself gave us free will and the ability to choose, then shouldn’t that be the standard for abortion? Shouldn’t it be up to each individual person to decide if they want to commit that sin? For the record I believe abortion is evil but I debate issues in my head and I’m not sure how to answer that. Thank you

It’s very hard to exclusively do business with pro life individuals or companies, but we should do our best. I also think some companies are more egregious than others. For example, Lyft driving people to abortions for free because of the Texas law is more egregious than Microsoft donating some money to Planned Parenthood among other charities. Also, my company donated to Planned Parenthood, and also the Catholic Church and pro-life orgs. A lot of times companies will cut big checks to a myriad of non-profits as some companies have a program where each employee gets some money they have to donate to a charity of their choice. So you see corporate money go to all kinds of causes just based on the fact that their employee base has all types of people.
