Heres a tip from someone who offgrids fulltime. When I go to walmart to stock up, I take everything out of its packaging and throw it away at Walmart so I dont have all that trash while out in the middle of nowhere. 💜👍 Also, I dont have an RV, but I've heard about a gadget you can add to RVs that keeps the water from coming out while it heats up so you can save water that way 👍

Ditto for cruisers on sailboats. We do not want the trash & here in MX (Tropics) roaches are notorious for laying their eggs in cardboard boxes.

Get a camp shower. Heat the water on the stove, then use your shower stall. When I use my camp shower I only use 1 gallon to wash my hair (long like Alison’s) and my body.

Love that you guys are doing your RV life. My husband and I have been tent camping for 40 years. Finally, we bought an RV and live our home on wheels! However, my husband was diagnosed with cancer, so our travels were limited to every 3 weeks, so he could be home for his chemo treatments. Our 53 years together were great, but our camping trips were my best memories. So, if you are working nonstop, try to figure out how to spend time now while you are young. I had an aunt who would say. "You are not like a fine bottle of wine. You don't get better with age!"

Next time you go on an adventure like this I would like to recommend, as a van tourer. Use a tub with a tight fitting lid, fill it with cold boiled water, then add some tea tree essential oil. Fold micro cloths and place in the tub. The best antibacterial body wash there is, no more questionable wet wipes 😉 have a seperate sealable tub for the used cloths 😁 your welcome 🙏

Bag trash and store in Ruby when it overflows your RV space. Tightly tie off any food-trash to reduce smell. Camping trick - Pop-up laundry hampers plus border clips make a great large trash can. Hygiene hack - baby wipes or body wipes, paired with dry shampoo or “no-rinse” shampoo. It helps.

You can dump the "cold hot water" into the bottle like you did until it gets hot, then use the hot water, and dump the cold water in the jug back into your fresh water tank. Save it up until the bottle is full then dump it back in. You can also buy 5 gallon collapsible water jugs and fill them up before you leave and put them in Ruby since she is being towed behind you, use that girl for all she is worth. Then you have extra fresh water to dump into your fresh water tank as needed. Once its used up fold up the empty jugs and store for later use.

Hey guys! We've followed you since you bought Clementine- we bought our vintage camper around the same time and went through a lot of the same restoration "fun" as you did. Regarding the tankless hot water system and the cold water "donut" that happens when you turn it off, we installed a diverter valve that sends the cold water back to the fresh water tank- we just turn it back to the shower mode after 10 seconds or so. We estimate it saves us 1/2 gallon per shower AND eliminates the icy cold showers. Pretty easy to install, you could probably do it in a couple of hours.

Definitely a great trial boondocking run. I have boondocked many times in Moab and jeeped longs canyon. Couple suggestions: An overnight bag in your car for day excursions. Go ahead and dump your grey water. Navy/bucket showers! Trash your food cartons in the trash when you leave Walmart. Buy more beer!

RE: your toilet paper. I use wet wipes, and I don’t let them go in my black tank, either. I have a trash bin they go in and the moisture seems to keep any sort of smell from being an issue. It’s not a sealed bin, and they dry out fairly quickly. has an open top. Might want to give it a try, so you can avoid all that plastic waste. I usually use 1 to 2 per poo (wipe, fold, wipe, fold, wipe, fold, bin), sometimes 3 or 4. I empty the bin every time I empty the black tank, which is usually about every 2 weeks. I get a box of them at a time from Costco, but you can buy them at Walmart or Sam’s too. Box lasts me a few months (I live in my rv full time, too). ALSO RE your fresh water tank: use white vinegar to sanitize it. Also run it through your lines. You might have to deal with the smell for a week or so after draining and rinsing, but at least it’s safe and it’s as good at sanitizing as bleach is.

You can dump your grey water on the ground, some parks actually let you do it. Soap and water is good for the soil and plants. A park we go to in East Texas has signs that say "we encourage dumping of grey water on the ground" so we do. They have a big tank the pull on a trailer with a small tractor called the honey pot and they charge $5 to dump your black tank, they pull up and dump it for you and you hand them $5, its pretty sweet. I guess our black water is their bread and butter and it smells like money to them lol.

NO. There are rules. You have to check with local jurisdictions, ask for permission from the property owner or ranger or camp host, you have to ensure it’s more than 150 feet from any water way including washes, that all products you use are fully biodegradable, etc etc etc. Please don’t give false information that will get people in trouble or ya know, pollute the planet.

Watching that tumbleweed reminded me. You probably know this, but if not, DID you know that tumbleweed is not indigenous to America? In truth, the tumbleweed (or Russian thistle, Salsola tragus) is not native. It was introduced into the United States in the 1870's - about the time the Santa Fe Railroad replaced the Santa Fe trail as a major transportation corridor westward. It was introduced accidentally, because it was used as a packing material which when discarded managed quite easily to seed itself and Voilà 'American' tumbleweed.

Y'all are hilarious - very entertaining. Like anything else, the more that you boondock, the easier it will get and the more you will like it. If you are set-up for it, it's not a hardship at all. It's a way of life for us. We're retired FTers who boondocked 10 of the last 12 months last year in an older motorhome. Water is everyone's limiting factor, as its heavy, so there's only so much you can take with you. We usually make it the 2 weeks BLM and FS camping limit on the 110 gallons we carry with us, (95 gallons in our fresh tank and 3, 5-gallon collapsible jugs in our toad) though we only have 50 gallons each for gray and black water storage. We are set-up to transfer gray water to our black tank if needed. We drink from our sanitized fresh tank - after it's filtered, of course. We filter the water going into the tank, we have a filter mounted under our sink and a PUR water pitcher type filter for the water we actually drink. Many swear by the Berkey filter. Choose what works best for you. Occasionally we will take our toad to town to replenish our water supply if we must shower more. I recommend adding an Extend-a-stay kit to allow you to attach a 20lb portable propane tank that you can take to town to refill or exchange as needed, without the need to move your motorhome. We just finished the second phase of our massive solar system. We're living this lifestyle off of a limited retirement income so had to take the low budget route, foregoing name brand components for more affordable options. It took us 5 years to gather the resources to complete it, doing all the work ourselves. We started by building a 620-watt liftable solar array on the side of our motorhome. It makes a nice bedroom window awning too, practically lifting itself with a couple gas struts, and it's easy to clean, standing safely on the ground. We finished the 12v part of our build a year ago, with the addition of a LiFePo-4 battery that we built with 8, 280ah prismatic cells, a Heltec 330amp BMS with a 5a active balancer. It cost us less than $1,500 to build this 560ah 12v, 7.1 kwh battery. We chose these cells rather than a pre-built battery because they fit perfectly under the steps of our MH where our old pair of golf cart batteries used to reside. Our 12v system uses an 80A Progressive Dynamics LFP converter/charger, a 1,000w Renogy inverter, a 50a Epever MPPT charge controller and a Lnex battery monitor. By mounting the solar array on the side of our coach, we left the roof free to rack 8, 550w solar panels (4,400 watts) down the length of our 35ft Class A, 15" off our roof, above our AC, vents, etc. This huge array covers our entire roof, providing some nice shade with plenty of cooling air underneath, increasing solar output and reducing the heat load on the air conditioners too, though our overall height is still just under 12 ft. You guys could probably fit at least 4-5 of these panels on your smaller roof if you were so inclined. We mounted our Sungold Power all-in-one 48V, 5,000W Inverter/100A charge controller/battery charger, breakers and a Lnex battery monitor on the wall in our bedroom, saving us space as well as money. The 48v battery that resides under our bed uses 16, 320ah prismatic cells and a 200amp BMS to keep it safe. Together with our 12v battery, we have a total of 23.5 kwh of batteries onboard - kept charged by 5,020 watts of solar. We removed the 13.5k btu rooftop Dometic AC we had in the bedroom and replaced it with an EG4 28.5 seer-2, 12k btu mini-split heat pump on the upper rear of our motorhome. It's super quiet, and only uses about 1/3 the power as our 14.5k btu soft start equipped Furrion we have up front. This second phase provides 24/7 off-grid air conditioning and heat from the heat pump, sparing our propane use too. We can run both A/Cs and charge our batteries at the same time, even in winter. We have a total of 6,000 watts of 120v inverted ac power, giving us off-grid electrical self-sufficiency for a total budget of under $10k (excluding the heat pump.) This is only a fraction of what a similarly sized, professionally designed and built system would be. Take care, we hope to see you down the road.

The go pro shot in Ruby down the center is the best shot we’ve ever gotten in Ruby! I loved getting to see out the back window as we hung out with y’all 🤩

We've boondocked a couple of times and we can do a week pretty easy if my bride could live without her AC. A full fuel tank will support the generator for about 5 days, so that she can have her AC. At that point we have to be within 25 miles of a gas station. We have solar, inverters and a decent battery bank, the propane will last 2 weeks easy if we use the heater, (about 2 months without the heater),the water tank about 5-6 days, but the grey tank needs dumped at least every 3 days, black tank at least once a week. She ain't going without her showers! I thought about an on demand heater but NOPE, I'm spoiled by the almost instant hot water from the hot water tank. So we waste probably around a pint of water waiting for hot or cold water. When boondocking, we actually use the on/off feature of our showerhead, but when we have full hookup, no reason to. For internet we use both TravlFi and Starlink, so we rarely need to use the DVD player. TravlFi we use rarely now that Starlink is so dependable. Groceries, beer and wine we buy for a week at a time already, so no issue there.

Love this, the off-grid test I've been waiting for! 😃 I'm surprised the solar got so low, with all the sunshine it seemed like you were getting, I wonder if things got really dusty up there and impaired the panels effectiveness. I'm also surprised Alison didn't just fill one jug of water until things were running hot and then take a normal shower shower😁 Great work! you have the DVD player now, I've been just downloading netflix and amazon shows to the computer and watching movies that way when I'm out of service

Mexican gas station solution for the TP -- throw it in a metal trash can, take it outside, and throw in a match. Might be tough with all that wind, though.

For over a year it was baby wipes for me, yes I was homeless living in a Chevy HHR, not a castle like you all. My old iPad which had the Harry Potter series on it ‘twas was my only movie entertainment, fine with me. Slept with a guitar, she does have nice curves. Cold Canned food.

Without buying extra gadgets, like a blue boy or a water bladder, we can Boondock for 10 days and that includes three showers each during the 10 days.

I love when you film the sky at night and also the daylight when you show the moving clouds. Was a school bus driver in Grand Junction and I did a trip over to Moab we picked up at a school and took them up a hill and just dropped them off and turned around and went back to pickup more until there were no more left. I loved the scenery as we were traveling there. But now I live in Ortonville,Minnesota and I drove school bus less than one year, because I’m not use to driving the dirt roads especially in the winter when you can’t tell where there’s road and where is the ditch.

It would be fun to get into new board games. We literally just play the same old ones from the 90s over and over again. Those collaborative ones sound cool!

I could be wrong but it looks like you are parking your RV broadside to the prevailing wind. The RV will act like a sail in heavy winds knocking you around. 5 days off grid isn't an issue but it looks like you are learning and figuring things out. You can get something like a "Trasharoo" and attach it to the spare tire on your tow vehicle. Compact all of the garbage as much as possible and put it in that. It keeps it out of the RV, eliminates smells and is easy to get rid of when you get near a trash facility.
