Autism is on the rise with no cause or cure in sight. Adrift in a void of medical data, more parents are breaking federal laws by giving their kids weed to treat the disorder.
This episode of Weediquette first aired on VICE TV in 2017. Weed laws in the US have since changed.

Pot did help me when I was 15. Within a year I was working as a waiter, in 2 I could navigate college and really make friends, I could talk to people. I could explore the world without being overwhelmed. A decade later I was running a business and able to sell design work, 20 years later my career is stable and I lead a large team. I still can't handle Costco or IKEA, and sometimes I like to stay in. I am still completely obsessed about my interests, and I still don't make friends easily, but the difference is profound. I remember pieces of how I felt as a child before and after finding pot. The rest of the world came into focus. People became somehow more real. I started asking questions, and developing a picture of who they were. It's hard to describe but it's like I suddenly began thinking externally. Everyone around me noticed. I still struggle, but my life was forever changed.

The reason the number of *diagnosed* people with autism is increasing is because we've expanded the *definition* of autism, and because we've increased awareness of the disorder. *I* have Asperger's, which until recently was seen as distinct from autism, but is now seen as a part of the autism spectrum. The autism I have is relatively subtle, because I can understand irony and metaphors really well, and I probably wouldn't have been diagnosed a few decades ago.
@HuckleberryHim
@HuckleberryHim Месяц назад
Absolutely false, there has been an expansion in diagnosis and diagnostic criteria, but it doesn't account for the veritable explosion of autism rates that is occurring recently. I know this is anecdotal, but literally all of the babies of family, friends, etc that I am aware of (maybe a half dozen or so atm) have autistic symptoms. They are not related to each other and are from diverse backgrounds. I have a family member who works in early childcare, and they have an enormous number of autistic students. Whatever the exact causes, this is most definitely a real thing, not just the result of improved diagnosis.

on the point that the incidence of autism has increased over the past few decades, this is largely due to an increase in awareness of less obvious autistic symptoms in ondividuals with low/no care needs. In essence, people who don't necessarily seem autistic are now increasingly being diagnosed, which is unlikely to be a result of vaccines or age of parents and so on. As mentioned in passing, autism is a spectrum and not a monolith, and so it is very different for different people
@whatupmexican

Absolutely. Especially when it came to those moms describing autism, they used a lot of really horribly worded rhetoric to describe autism. One of the mothers even said they would tear their own limbs off to get their child to stop stimming, which is a horrible thing to wish upon your child call my especially since when most stimming is harmless. @@whatupmexicannot every person with autism is functioning and low need. Some of them stim to the point it is harmful; scratching skin off, pulling hair or skin off, chewing on body parts, slapping themselves, etc… you’re portraying autism as a harmless disorder that doesn’t affect people, and that is dishonest. Frankly, if you have high functioning autism, I don’t even think you should be diagnosed with it. It would be like diagnosing someone with “low-grade adhd” because they have a few of the symptoms but not all of them. I’ve literally met people that have been diagnosed with autism because they have things they are really interested in, don’t understand people, don’t like looking people in the eye, and don’t like leaving there home. That’s not autism from where I’m sitting… that is normal. Screeching at me because you can’t form the words to express yourself, an inability to recognize my emotions, and excessively continuous stimming that can last all day… THAT is autism. Some people just want an excuse to not work on their character flaws, and that is what seeking fake diagnosis does, it provides some people with their excuse for being a flawed human being.

Autistic people were not interviewed, nor were their opinions and experiences considered in this video. Their absence was not explained by Vice. Perhaps Vice felt the opinions of autistics too insignificant to bother thinking about. Cannabis, may very well turn out to be useful for autistics, but that was also not fully explored. Did Vice seek to interview autistics using cannabis? If they did, perhaps their experiences were also too insignificant to fit in the film. This was about the ideas of mothers/parents of autistics. It was heartbreaking to hear one mother speak of her "losses", starting with her still living child! She did not loose her son, he is there. She lost her fantasy, her dream, her expectation, of the son she envisioned she will have. Who is not the son she has. Generally autism societies, and autism communities represent the interests of the parents, as seems to be the case with the activism/support group of these mothers. For some reason, autistics still are regarded as needing to be cured, among many such groups. I did not see ay alternate opinions explored here. Id have expected Vice to ask the autistics using cannabis if their hoping for a cure. This was disappointedly another film pedling misconceptions and ignoring the knowledge, and experiences of autistics themselves.

I hear what you’re saying but you have to look at this from all angles, mothers are often the lifelong voices for their autistic children. It is important to hear how they really feel and hear about how their lives have been impacted. You do realize that their sense of loss is valid because there was a change for them that had a huge impact on them. Clearly these mothers love their children, hold space for people to grieve the child they thought they had prior to the diagnosis

Jesus--that one mom could help her kid by just reducing her volume. She keeps high-pitch-screaming in his face @19:35-36, and my autism was being triggered by it from a distance with the volume turned down. His nervous system is influenced by her pitch and dynamics too, and even if it's meant as an expression of joy/enthusiasm, it stuns/overwhelms the nervous system and kicks it into a higher gear. If you want to help temper someone's nervous system, temper yours before you engage and you'll have far less damage control to do on the back end. "Indoor voice" is what they used to call it; they could practice it together and it could be an amazing bonding experience to simultaneously temper. I love that these moms are willing to 'take risks' to break these laws when they have the chance to help their children. I can't imagine such a thing in the 80s. It's hard to be an unconventional parent--you can be ostracised easily for such 'socially conspicuous' infractions.

As a late diagnosed autistic person, the reason more people are being diagnosed is because we are now more aware of what warrants an autism diagnosis. People who weren't diagnosed back 50 yrs ago are now being diagnosed today. The diagnosis has changed in recent times and with more awareness, and more understanding of what that means, people who flew under the radar most of their life are now able to get a diagnosis. Females also generally present different than males. 50 years ago the understanding of what autism was was very poorly understood and many people who were diagnosed as "schizophrenic" were autistic. In fact, many different diagnoses were lumped into schizophrenia. On the other hand, autistic people (autism isn't something you just magically "get") may have been suffering most of their lives undiagnosed, only to find out they weren't a freak, broken, or a weirdo (as society loves to label us) but were in fact autistic. Autistic people don't want a cure. We would like to manage our symptoms better, yes. We should be focused on helping and accommodating autistic people..not trying to cure them. Also, talk to autistic people and not just the parents of autistic children. We exist, too. And it is a spectrum, so their are people who need life long care and their are people who can live independently but still need a support system. It's genetic, it's not caused my vaccines, or sugar, or whatever BS people like to believe. These claims are proven false and only do more harm than good. Try to accommodate autistic people instead of curing them. All I ever wanted to know was what was "wrong" with me and finding out I was autistic changed everything. Also, Autism Speaks sucks.

The child didn't ask to be autistic, just as much as the parents and family didn't ask for an autistic child. But neurotypical (non-autistic) adults are fully capable of educating themselves, learning to accommodate, and seeking professional help if they can't cope with the change. We wouldn't say this about any other terminal illness or disability like cancer or seizures that requires accommodation (I'm not comparing these disorders and cancer, it's to demonstrate the unfairness of shifting the blame to the child). Also, the "white autism mom" light this reporting seems to focus on has been one of the most detrimental factors of autism advocacy.

You actually watched the video? I saw the title and already know it's completely and utter horsesh*t. I studied psychological conditions and special needs, due to a family member who also taught special needs children. No drug can "cure" a neurological rewiring of the brain, that makes someone be different. And certainly not a drug that dims your brain. The only way we will ever be able to do anything about neurological conditions is at the molecular level, and we are nowhere near doing that. I get so sick of people suggesting moronic things that only harm people further, especially the most vulnerable.

As an autistic adult (I was diagnosed when I was 10/11 (I don’t remember when exactly)) I’ve noticed how much weed has genuinely helped me deal with my autism. 1) socially/anxiety: one of the biggest benefits I’ve noticed is that since I feel relaxed and my anxiety lessened, I’m able to socialize normally, I can actually start convos. Before I was debilitatingly anxious, I couldn’t get out of bed, constant anxiety/panic attacks. 2) it’s helped with my hypersensitivity, sometimes I feel so overwhelmed and it can be physically painful to even just lay down in bed. Weed is the only thing that has been able to relax me when I’m in this state. It’s honestly been the best thing for me.

There is this stuff called marinol. Comes in 2mg or 5mg. My daughter who was a cheerleader/ all sports athlete. Was diagnosed with (AML) leukiema at the age of 16. I did some research and found this medication. She took this medication. It was the only thing that helped her with her extreme pain from the chemo and it helped her with her eating. chemo kills everything, Good and bad. she was having a hard time keeping anything down. They were threatening feeding tube, she said absolutely not. So we tried other options. This medication was the best thing in the world for her. At first they were giving her oxycodone for her pain.. Problem with that is, it's so highly addictive and on top of the leukemia she was already battling, I didn't want her to be dependent on a controlled substance. She has now been cancer free for 6 years.

Im going to give you a bit of advice, coming from someone who has ADHD and has been medicated since i was young. Docs prescribe it as "take the dame amount of this medication at the same time every day," but unfortunately thats not how ADHD works. With ADHD, not all days are the same. Depending on sleep levels, diet, excercise, and many other factors, some days are easier than others. On a "good" day, i dont need as much of the medication as i do on a "bad" day. And if i take the higher dose when i dont need it, i just end up overstimulated and it makes symptoms worse instead of better. The other issue with taking the same amount every day, if you use the dose based on the "bad" days, taking that amount every day causes tolerance to go up, and then the medication becomes less effective. The biggest solution i have for all this is to use IR formulations instead of XR. - You can break IR tablets in half for when you want to take less. - You can skip the morning if you are having an easy morning, and you can still take it around lunchtime if you need it for the afternoon, without worrying about being able to sleep - likewise, you can take it in the morning and skip the afternoon for lighter/half days IR is all around a more flexible medication than XR/ER

As far as treatment resistant adhd, my other question is: have you had your daughter evaluated for autism? ADHD and autism are actually very common together. Oftentimes, with people who have both, when you medicate the ADHD it actually reveals more symptoms of autism.

Some weekend days she skips it altogether unless we have plans or something she needs to be able to focus a little more for. But i do worry about the tolerance issue, so i appreciate the feedback on that. And i have thought there is a chance she could be on the spectrum and that is why she doesnt respond very much to the meds, but there is a waiting list to get her tested in our area. She is on the list now so hopefully that will happen soon 🙏 thanks again!! 🖤
@blackbird1234100
@blackbird1234100 Месяц назад
@shannonbritton5313 yeah, skipping it on the weekends is generally a good idea, unless its specifically needed (homework, music lessons, cleaning/chores, certain personal projects). Glad to hear she is on the list to be evaluated for autism. On your end, the most important part is going to be making sure you are open, understanding, and accepting of her. Her brain works differently to a neurotypical brain, and sometimes that will make it very difficult to understand how she's feeling. It's going to be important that you trust what she tells you about her experience. One of the hardest things for neurodivergent kids is that by the time they're an adult, they have heard tens of thousands of more pieces of negative criticism than a neurotypical kid would have. She needs your understanding and compassion when it comes to mistakes.

His sensory differences would also cause him to harm himself if we weren't constantly on top of that as well. For instance he would be unphased sitting in water that was too hot. Also nonverbal people who aren't communicating well in other ways are going to have a hard time communicating a serious medical episode, and not everything is as obvious as you think. @@hunterrick4I’m an autistic adult who’s used cannabis for my autistic overload since I was 17. It’s made a world of difference for me. While it won’t help everyone, for me it helps slow down my overwhelming overload and processing. I also have lots of medical issues. And while it doesn’t make the pain go away completely, it makes it all tolerable. Overall it makes everything more tolerable for me.

Just as a side note, marijuana can also give you panic attacks, especially if you are prone to anxiety. Many people on the spectrum struggle with intense social anxiety. This mashup seems extremely ill suited to me, plus there is zero proper scientific studies to support it's use for autism, so essentially parents are conducting their own experiments on their children...

I'm autistic. I use pot. It's legal in Canada for recreational use. Literally though, this piece profiles autism moms who are apparently terrified of big pharma but okay with experimenting on their own children. I sincerely feel for the fact that these moms are struggling, but pot isn't like some natural miracle cure-all. It's a drug, just like anything else. It has pros and cons. If it didn't have possible risks, it wouldn't work. I take issue with this piece for numerous reasons, especially the "curing autism" ideology. I really fear that some of these moms, especially the ones who view stimming as bad, are just going to end up getting their kids high, revelling in the fact that their kids act "less autistic", and essentially keeping their kids on pot for the rest of the life because they view it as entirely beneficial.

@@alyssapisani Yes, I think you have expressed some of my thoughts as well, that I didn't fully express. I get that these mums want to help their children, but they also refuse to accept them for who they are. Those kids need help than most with learning to cope in a neurotypical dominated world, and not just to get drugged to be more compliant with neurotypical expectations. Basically that was all they were achieving, just making their kids easier to handle for themselves rather than helping the child get what they actually needed. The neurotypical urge to control neurodivergent behaviour is just sickening and terrifying. I mean, I get it's not easy being a parent even to a child you can more easily relate to, but maybe just attempt to relate to your child instead of trying to fix them... Very dehumanizing.

I'm autistic myself and the description saying that autism would need a cure is pretty insulting.

You're high functioning. That's why. Let's say low pigmentation would be a spectrum. So while low pigmentation is not a problem generally, no pigmentation limits your life choices and poses skin cancer risk. Parents of autistic children do not want to kill their individuality, they want them to be able to control their own lives.

My 18 yo low functioning nonverbal son w autism. Had seizures and they stopped immediately with cannibas. Years of pharma after being in ICU from depacote and trileptal. Depacote he has pancreatitis and trileptal was nephritis. He could only ingest liquid meds and it was killing him literally and then THC

It must be so hard to never be able to relax because you’re always worried about what your kid is doing. My parents refused to diagnose me with autism but they shamed me for my behavior but honestly I know I put them through a lot. I personally am too into my personal space to have kids

Just like everyone else on the human spectrum, I've known autistics who it helped them find their voice and access their empathy, as well as folks whom it left them borderline catatonic or even schizophrenic while under the influence.

I had no idea how many children have autism and how much it increases until I had a child with autism. Being a parent of a child with severe autism is absolutely life altering. Me and his mother are now in a position where we pretend we're together but really we just go through the motions to be there for our son and I pretend not to notice my wife has a man on the side and she pretends I could never understand. But I honestly feel all of it pales in comparison to one day in my son's shoes.

It also helps with Parkinson's disease. I literally watched a man go from shaking uncontrollably to where he couldn't even hold a cup to take a sip to within 4 minutes of THC oil under his tongue sitting back relaxed with no one tremor. It's also amazing for ppl with seizures and ADHD. My husband is severe ADHD to where he would work 12-14 hour days and still not be able to wind down to sleep. With Marijuana he sleeps well, feels better, lowered his blood pressure and keeps him focused.
