I'm Scandinavian, and my grandmother's generation used bonnets. I grew up with it. People used to wear different types of hats to bed for two reasons: to keep their heads warm at night, and to keep the hair looking nice. I suspect it changed when people with straight/wavy hair could afford to wash their hair more often, since that hair type can handle frequent washing. Then bonnets became an old lady thing, and curly-haired young women were not going to wear grandmother clothes to bed, even if the bonnets were good for their hair.

It really blows my mind that people are trying to gatekeep bonnets. Did everyone skip out on history 101? Bonnets have been a thing across the world for a heck of a long time. But for real, your bonnets are gorgeous! And I love the ponytail beanies you sell! 😍

They use to call them sleep caps. The older women wore them to sleep in to preserve the wash and curl they got once a week at the beauty shop. Older ladies didn’t wash their hair at home. At least the older ladies in the south didn’t. They were satin with elastic and lace around the opening. It fell out of style with the younger women in the 70s. My mother in law was a hold out and wore her sleep cap until her death in the 2000s.

Exactly, bonnets are not an African-American thing! Bonnets been around since forever. However it’s the AA who made it popular to wear outside the house (that’s not a win btw).

I remember the wolf in little red riding hood wearing grandma's bonnet. Grandma was white!! These drawings were made years ago by Han Christian Andersen, in Europe in the 18th or 19th century can't remember which, but it was in Europe!! Not Africa! I don't, as a black woman wear bonnets for bed, I just wear head scarves when I remember to.

Ppl always say if I want long healthy hair to invest in a silk pillow case. I’m too poor. I only shop at $1 tree. They do not have silk pillow cases- but they have $1 SILK BONNETS!!!! & I also find it AMAZING how I can go to sleep without hair in my face & without damaging it with a hair tie while trying to go to bed.
