Kyoto is the most popular place to go in Japan outside Tokyo. Because so many people want to go there, there are problems with over-tourism and the most popular sightseeing areas are very crowded. In this video I'll show you what it's really like, and how you can avoid the crowds and still enjoy beautiful Kyoto. Everyone wants to go to the top 10 most popular places, so they'll always be busy, but you only need to go a street or two away to find quieter streets. The video includes the popular Southern Higashiyama area around Kiyomizudera, Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, as well as Gion (including Hanamikoji Street), the Kamogawa River, Yasaka Shrine and Maruyama Park. Plus some off-the-beaten track spots like Tainai Meguri and Yasaka Koshindo.

I just came back from Japan. I would be out by at least 7:00am, often closer to 6, but leaving before 7:00am was good enough to have moments with no one in view even in popular spots. Most tourists do not go out before 8:00am.

I really like that you show the reality of the crowds and haven't heavily edited your footage. Most content creators give you an unrealistic view of the scenery and the crowds. I'm not saying you shouldn't be excited/hyped but it does help to know what to expect 😂

Exactly what I wanted to show in the video! You can get nice Instagram photos with no one else in if you try (well maybe not everywhere!) but I think you need to know what to expect in reality so you're not disappointed.

I went to Kiyomizu a year ago and it was horrendous. I've never seen so many people packed together like sardines on the street up to the temple. I didn't enjoy being there one bit. As I was only on a day trip from Tokyo going there in the early morning or in the evening was not an option. Kinkaku-ji was also extremely busy. I did notice that compared to when I first came to Kyoto in 2007 it's a lot busier these days.
@cakeswithfaces

The popular places in Kyoto are always so busy - it's a shame that it takes away the enjoyment of them sometimes. But there are quieter, less well known places too , which often offer a much more pleasant experience, even if they aren't as famous or impressive as the more popular spots.

I was there the tail end of Feb 2023 and the first few days of March 2023 crowds were way less, especially early in the morning. I was lucky to get numerous pictures of locations devoid of people. I went through Fushimi inari only bumping into one tourist and a few early morning locals. Seeing the difference not much later in the month makes me extra grateful I went when I did. And a shot off Kiyomizudera where it looks empty, amazing the transformation in such a short time.

I think I filmed this on about 8th March. As March goes on, people start to arrive for cherry blossom season so it gets busier rapidly. There are lots of benefits to going in the off-season! I think last year it was unseasonably warm, and this year unseasonably cold. So it can go either way! 😅 Best to take layers. I lived nearish Kitaoji Station for a month. Decent food options ranging from what feels like grandma's living room at Genpe to McDonald's and Saizeriya and stuff at the station itself. Easy to reach with the subway and a good starting point to start walking down the river IMO. With the high school and university nearby you get quite a few students chilling along the river and may occasionally encounter someone practicing their instrument below a bridge. I've had many nice evening strolls along the river with someone playing saxophone in the background, or.. that one kid practicing otamatone xD Definitely beats the crowds of popular Koyoto.

You were quite lucky out and about without huge crowds in Kyoto, I thought. then, voila, the usual packed street leading to Kiyomizu-dera. Over-tourism is an issue worldwide, which seems to be alleviated only through public awareness. As you mentioned, there are always off-the-beat streets where you can keep a distance from the rest, and perhaps they are there for some visitors to unfold some hidden gems.
@cakeswithfaces

I think if people knew about more places to go in Japan, it would spread everyone out and really help with these problems. But on the surface level, people new to Japan only hear about Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka and the top spots in each of them, so they don't know about all the other stunning places there are to visit.

Those numbers look similar if a little lower than when we were there mid april at Kiyomizu-dera. We're going again in November hoping to catch the autumn leaves there. Thankfully we found a cool hotel half way between Yasaka shrine and Kiyomizu-dera and we are morning people, so we should be able to beat the crowds to Kiyomizu-dera. Wont be able to avoid them for the night time illumination festival though.

I’ve been to Kyoto about 10 times (3 times last 12 months). I don’t think the crowds are that bad at all. Yes kiyomizu-dera, bamboo forest and a few more places are definitely crowded but not worse than in any other popular city (Venice, Florence etc are way worse). But places like Tofokuji and Daitoku-ji which I would probably consider top10 are almost empty on most visits I’ve done. So you don’t have to walk long at all to have amazing attractions almost by yourself.

I noticed new laws for Gion from April 1 - tourists and access. Think this might expand into other areas ? We are still 8 months out before we, already seeing lots of changes .... amazing
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 2 месяца назад
You'll still be able to walk along Hanamikoji Dori, the main street in Gion, it's just the smaller side streets that will be out of bounds. When I filmed this, there were already "no photos" signs in them. It's understandable when you think of how some of them are residential streets, or with tea houses or restaurants trying to go about their daily business that didn't like the noise and inconvenience of crowds of tourists. But when you hear about how some people had been harassing geisha, it's pretty shocking that anyone would behave that way and be so disrespectful. Gion in particular has a very private and mysterious feel, with lots of shutters on the buildings, so it's understandable they'd want to keep some areas private. But it's a shame visitors won't be able to experience that in the same way any more. I don't know if other areas will adopt this; I can't really think of another area in the same situation. The rest of the southern Higashiyama area, where the majority of tourists go, which also gets very crowded, is all set up for tourists with lots of shops and places to get snacks, so I don't think he'd restrict access there.

It was unseasonably warm last year I think! Most of the time I went around in a t-shirt, thin hoodie and light jacket. Bullet trains on that route are very frequent (every 10 mins at times!) so you should be ok. Mid April is a quiet time. However the start of April is busier because of cherry blossom season, so if you want the seats with extra space for luggage you might want to book earlier. There are hundreds: www.tofugu.com/japanese/japanese-counter-tsu/ In any case, any of these phrases would get your message across, even if you just hold your fingers up, and that's the important thing! To get from Tokyo to Kyoto, it's best to take the shinkansen. The different names you might see are for different speeds - the Nozomi is the fastest, and the Hikari just stops at a few more stations along the way. There are so many lovely hotels in Kyoto, and prices change all the time. I'd recommend looking on a hotel booking site like Expedia. Here's my process for choosing a hotel that's right for you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TAmhxg9MwIc.html Here's the hotel I stayed in last time in Kyoto: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KMCxdMdtAGE.html

@@challenger516 Weekday. Tbh the main areas and popular sites in Kyoto are always crowded whenever you go. But you only have to go a street or two away to find much more peaceful areas. Most people don't wander too far, so if you do, it's worth it!

Yeah, not possible LMAO It's way too crowded now. And the funny thing is, it's not that big a deal of a place once you get there. People really actually should visit the smaller, real time-machine Japanese towns and villages elsewhere if people want to see the real old Japan. Of course, do go have a look at KINKAKUJI and the INARI-San's multiple Torii gates, but other than that, it's just OK. But seriously, there are many other smaller towns/villages that are real throw-backs in the old Japanese styles that are much more interesting, if you're into that sort of thing and are looking for that. It's over-crowded due to the hype.
@cakeswithfaces

Absolutely agree that Kyoto isn't the only historic place in Japan, but it's the only place most people hear about when they book their trip. I think if foreign tourists were more aware of other places, it would help spread everyone out and ease the over-crowding.

@@cakeswithfaces okay come on, the pros of e-sims vastly outweigh those of pocket wifis. If you have an unlocked phone with esim capability, pocket wifi shouldn't even be considered. there are two buckets of pocket wifi users: 1. ppl with locked/incompatible phones 2. ppl who've just "always done it this way" every time they go to Japan and just don't wanna change And this is why so many new Japan travelers are so misinformed.

In some places, as you can see in the video, it's extremely crowded and this video was filmed at the start of March, so it's busier at more popular times of year. But if you avoid the most popular places, I hope I've shown in the video that it's possible to avoid the crowds and still enjoy Kyoto if you want to go there. But there are lots of alternative places to see historic, traditional Japan too!

i used to want to go in japan. Not anymore. it's better to see japan on video than for real , too many of cultural flaws. bland people who think to say what would be good for us while they're often wrong about us , who force themselves to be friendly while it's only at the surface and they avoid foreigners like pest and insult them in the back, too difficult language to learn, too expensive services , too rigid laws , no thanks
