The Steam Deck is the ultimate device for gaming minimalism. It can play nearly anything, every game is downloadable, games overall are cheaper, and the entire device is self-contained.
Although there's not much I'd want to keep or let go of in my life right now (video game wise), I still like your approach to this. You have a very underrated channel and are a hardworking, honest person. ty
I struggle with this as I have downsized my collection twice over the years and each time has led to regret and re-buying some of those games. It is so hard to decide what you truly do not want in your collection, but at the same time, I hate to move to all digital. Agh the choices!
For me my breaking point was when I moved and many of my things broke. I’ve gone majority digital since but I totally understand the mental tug internally! Wishing you the best to get thru the minimal journey!
I sold most of my video game collection, I kept only 15 physical games. I only buy digital games on Steam now, plus I don't have space in my room for anything anyway. I moved from a 1 bedroom apartment to a single room, so space is limited.
Awesome video! I think something people don’t really discuss when it comes to gaming/ collecting is completion bias. There is literally something baked it to the lizard parts of our brains where we feel discomfort when a task/ goal is incomplete. So having a backlog of unplayed game or holes in an ever growing collection can actually effect your ability to focus or grow. I think that choosing minimalism is a sign of maturity, as you are essentially deciding to give up a small comfort of having your things, and gaining a comfort of having less things to crowd your life. I go through spurts of accrual and purging all the time, but they are usually bookended by big changes in my life. And sadly I do think that tragedy can often help in seeking comfort in minimalism. As losing everything can really show you how little some of the things you are collecting matter. I was homeless for about a year in my 20s and I essentially lived out of a duffle bag for that period. And even though it was rough. In a lot of ways, I had far more clarity of mind than the times where I have been in more stable situations. Thank you for sharing, and it was a dope topic.
Thank YOU so much again for watching the video and for sharing your personal experiences! It must have been so hard to go through all that but looks like a lot of good came out of it overall. I feel like people get such a bad rep for collecting games when there is such a huge underlying from childhood memories and beyond. Choosing minimalism takes courage and there are so many barriers to break to even begin the process of letting go of your things. There’s nothing wrong with collecting but when when you have bigger priorities in your life or put into a situation that you need to, it really changes your perspective and the pandemic gave me clarity to focus on what I need to do help me move forward with minimalism. Thank you as always for the kind words and input. Always love the discussions! 🙌
@@jenjergaming No problem, and nah, I don’t sweat the past. I’m fortunate enough to have been able to build myself up from my setbacks, some people aren’t as lucky. And I love collected media, mostly records and games- but yeah it can be a lot at times, especially when moving 😂 I think the pandemic made a lot of people take stock of what they were filling their lives with. I hope you can reach the level of minimalism that brings you peace of mind. Congrats on 1K. Fighting towards 500 on my channel. I know it takes a lot of work, keep going.
Thank you! There’s much progress as it’s a constant battle keeping things aside that matter. And hoping for a strong growth for your channel as well! It’s definitely a lot of work but hang in there! 🙌
I've personally decided to keep my 2DS and sell all my physical copies of Pokemon games due to their prices constantly rising and a lot of place they took. Now I have CIAs of those games installed and I emulate GBA titles on those... It was hard but it had to be done.
Xbox Game Pass & PS Plus are great ways that we can play games without the mental clutter of ownership. People will say subscription services are taking gaming out of the hands of consumers, but I think it's a great way to live the minimalist philosophy. Now, not every game you'll want to play is available on subscription services, but with those, you could purchase, play and then uninstall, knowing that they're able to be redownloaded later if you need to!
Subscription services are the definitely the way to go! They’ve definitely been increasing the prices but still worth the amount to play. Just hope it doesn’t hit triple digits for base prices 😅
I have a small, "curated" collection (lol). I have about 200 PS1, PS2, Saturn, 3DO and N64 games and i love it. I can actually play them all. But I'm not against huge large collections because honestly if i had the funds I'd buy hundreds more games...
Some classics and underrated consoles there! I use to collect more consoles and games but with high theft and natural disasters gives me anxiety keeping them safe at home lol
bro i think you might've missed your calling as some kind of counselor lol. i got really good this year with just playing what i like when i like, i think that really made things much easier. heck most of the game i beat i had for least a year or so. there's nothing wrong with cherishing what your parents got you, cause sometimes those memories and whatnot are all we gonna have when we get old one of these days. i don't collect, i just make the flow as i see fit. it won't always go well, but it's mine and mine alone... anyways.... gonna have to hermit up regarding tears since i'm a cheapo that didn't pay for one day shipping. gamer for life, that's all i'll ever know
Yeah it’s gotta be what you like! It’s hard to not see other suggestions but making sole decisions of your own is a huge help! Exactly! Parents have brought up our childhood and gaming is a big part of it! Because you’re right it’s a part of us! I think when it turns into unhealthy hoarding is when we need to seek help if possible. Make healthy choices for yourself because that’s the beautiful part of life! Same buddy this Thursday night and the entire weekend I will have away messages 🤣
What is the ost playing in the background? Also this really is an interesting point of view on gaming. There is a lot of stuff I have that I probably don't need. Letting go of that stuff would probably help a lot. Thanks for uploading this.
It’s from Xenoblade Chronicles 3- Great Cotte Falls both Day and Night version! It’s something honestly I never thought about but I wonder why I was so stressed and a part of it was I had so many games. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! 🙂
This is difficult for me to do, especially since for one, my PlayStation collection is something I've been building since I was a kid and 2, some of the games I have I'll never be able to replace and I like to revisit games often. Edit: by not being able to replace them, I'm saying they are either too expensive to reaquire or simply cannot be reaquired legally or at all easily.
Nothing wrong with that! Some things are just hard to replace and if it gives you a healthy purpose to do so, then all for it! For me personally I had to let go a lot of it due to finances and hard times and now as I’ve gotten older, I told myself it’s ok to let go of most them because I had other priorities that I didn’t need to hold onto them. I have mostly digital games now.
@@jenjergamingsame here. I sold off myy GameCube, Wii, Gameboy advance, & DS including the games because I beat them all and played them to death. For years I held onto them saying I would go back and play them, but I also wanted new experiences from games. I've been PC gaming since 2008 and I've pretty much only played Pokemon, age of empires, civilization, rust, terraria, Zuma, satisfactory, mmos & Blizzard games. Now I'm almost 30 and trying to buy games I've missed out on from PlayStation and Xbox, but feel so overwhelmed to jump into a franchises like final fantasy, assassin's creed, resident evil, mass effect, far cry, Zelda, Metroid, Mario games.. etc.. I'm getting fomo + knowing physical games disappearing makes me uneasy. I pretty much lived a minimalist lifestyle without knowing it, but I ended up diving into extreme minimalism and started living with less than 100 items. It brought me so much more clarity. I started to accumulate again, but I feel like it's getting out of control as I have no time to play every square enix title I'm interested in.
