Culture shocks are real. I have decided to share my experiences of life in Germany as a Brit, as well as the beautiful places I am lucky enough to visit.
My meditative videos show a calming and artistic view of the places I visit and the quiet, peaceful wanders I take through them. Medieval villages, picturesque cottages, beautiful cities. Relax and escape with me from the busy bustling world to my dreamy and serene slow living way of seeing my surroundings. Experience the magic of peering into the past and being in a fairytale, just for a little while.

Hi Lauren, I'm a native English speaker who lived in Germany for three years and I really enjoy your videos. I like the way your cinematography captures such romantic views of Germany that, as foreigners, we often appreciate more that native Germans. Old Fachwerk, medieval Rathäuser, craggy cliffs with castles, and lush green forests are all so dreamy. Sometimes my German friends would tease me about having the same tastes as their Omas! And I appreciate your approach in this video. Yes, enjoy the happiness that you have in Germany. I think in the massive chaos that we live in now it's important for people to see that it is possible to have a peaceful, nice life. Please, keep doing your videos.

Don't be scared - you make our lifes happier as well. Often it doesn't take much to be happy. I love your analogy of walking in the rain just because, without being forced to do so for a specific reason. Sometimes for just being in the moment. While I don't like walking in the rain in the current season, I sometimes love walking in the rain after a hot, dry and dusty summer day to smell the fresh air, or the smell of freshly cut or wet grass... Or watching a toddler jumping into a puddle with full intent, just enjoying the moment without worrying about his clothes getting wet and dirty or the next day. Things that we as adults have simply forgotten to enjoy.

Over all, I quite like to live in Germany. Not that there is no room for improvement, but looking at many other countries in the world, I think we are not doing too bad. The only thing thats bugging me - and thats not a shallow joke - is the German winter. The older I get, the more it is annying me. Physically as well as mentally, which is somewhat connected. Btw., I noticed we have something in common: the fondness for a good coffee. I even have the same espresso machine! :)
@LaureninGermany
@LaureninGermany Год назад
You need that machine to get through the German Winter! Lol! Yes, it’s long and cold and can be hard to deal with. The Summer is always too short! I got a different portafilter for that machine, which makes it less temperamental, and I feel you can’t do better in that price range! And absolutely, Germany has so much going for it. it’s easy to lose sight of that with the news.
@petebeatminister
@petebeatminister Год назад
@@LaureninGermany Yes, I also use a Brita filter for the water, also for the water I use in the kettle, the egg cooker ect. The water here has so much lime in it, it ruins all machines in no time, if you dont filter it out. Well, the winter... apart of being dark und ugly, it really affects my health - I spare you the unpleasant details here. Its something that comes with the age I guess. I seriously thought about living somewhere else. But what I need is a english speaking EU country with a mediterranean climate. And since Gibralta is not EU anymore... I'm out of options. :)
@LaureninGermany
@LaureninGermany Год назад
@@petebeatminister I have installed a water filter, too! About 3 months ago. You are so right! I haven’t yet had to descale the machine - and you‘ve reminded me, it needs to be changed today, thank you. I get iller in the Winter, too, I have an autoimmune condition, so I really understand. It’s a struggle, and very difficult to do anything about. Except emigrate. And like you said, that’s not really possible!
@petebeatminister
@petebeatminister Год назад
@@LaureninGermany Yes, its absolutely worth it spending the money for the filter cartridges. The descaling process with this DeLonghi machine is quite complicated, and the original DeLonghi agent is not cheap either. Though, you can use citric acid as well, which is much cheaper. But as I said, there are other uses for filtered water, too. About the migration: well, if I'd be a millionaire it wouldn't be a problem, but with a tiny pension its not so easy. And I dont want to live in Turky or so, where I don't understand the language and end up being stuck with other old age Germans all day.
@LaureninGermany
@LaureninGermany Год назад
@@petebeatminister yes, I don’t find the filter to have ended up costing more. The tap water is nicer to drink, and I‘m sure it’s healthier. I’m secretly addicted to those programmes about Rentner im Ausland. Positives and negatives… being very rich seems to be the best option.. but.. oops!

I stopped watching the news because it just made me miserable. It would be really nice to get a good news for every bad one and I am glad to see you finding coping mechanisms. Yes germans tend to hold back when in "public", not all (my wife sure doesn't :D) but the majority I'd say. However, once infected with something joyful they love to share it with othes. Lovely to see you getting interested in the german heritage. It's something that has been really lost sadly, mainly driven away by centuries of forced christianity and being stained by a germanic craze in the NS era. However I think it is important to see where this wonderful country and it's people came from. I hope you have a lovely sunday. Güße aus Minga

I miss it quite a bit, especially around Christmas time, the whole atomsphere is just different. I'm also really sadden by what has happened to the UK ever since the brexit-vote, but as you said, some things, there's just nothing one can do. Minga has been my home for nearly 15 years now and will be for many, many years to come (my wife looooves this city so much). Dear Lauren, that is another beautiful pearl of a video in a long row of treasures you`ve already created! :-)) A big Dankeschön to you, again, I always enjoy those gems so very much! 😀This time you went north again and I was so delighted when I noticed it! I myself am a "Nordlicht" by birth and have been living in the northwest area until today (never left it for 56 years now except for holidays), and I know all the east and north fresian islands along the coast from my childhood. I believe I surely do have an eye for the beauty of this country and its thousands of magical corners and places, I also know those sceneries and the coast in their different lights, moods and seasons. But when I dive into the atmosphere you spin with those pictures and sights, together with the music (so well chosen every time and also in this video, love it!) and your special way to tell the story of the area, the people and the buildings, I become so very proud and happy to be born in such a lovely country! 😀 I`ve always been interested in folk tales, also in the old traditional german tales like the brothers Grimm once collected while wandering through the country and listening to what the people knew and had to tell. When I see all those pretty historical houses, the mills, taverns and market places, the bell towers and churches everywhere, the castles, old gates, wells and cobblestones, the small bridges and city walls through your eyes, your camera, together with the music you chose for that places, I can clearly see how back in time all this must have been inspired people to tell stories about sad fishermen and good hunters, clever farmers and greedy millers, about witches and wizards, princes, princesses, good kings and vengeful queens - or about tiny little villages, surrounded by fields and rolling hills, overgrown with firs, or calm lakes in the middle of mystical green woods with old beeches and oaks. It`s all still there, for hundreds of years and until today, we just must open our eyes and put our fairytale glasses on, and we can see Rotkäppchen coming along the way, we can imagine a witches Knusperhäuschen between the tree trunks of a near forest and we hear the dwarfs sing their song when they come home to Schneewittchen on a summer`s evening. For me, your videos always show the ancient fairytale side of Germany, the mystic soul and special atmosphere of the old cities and villages, the lovelyness of the historical landscape and surroundings, the speaking old walls. You do not "only" show the facts of today, I can see and feel the whole invisible background and "wonder" of it through your camera. Because, isn`t it a "wonder", that we managed to care for and rescue all those buildings in their centauries old, historical form and shape? It is not only the buildings that have been safed - together with them we are having a country full of living tales and often places-related folk songs, and all this can be touched, felt and lived until today. With all that we hear about some people`s bad plans about what they want to do with those cities and the people in Europe I worry very much about all this; and I also do think of England and what is already going on there. If this shall be the change we must face - It will be a great loss of freedom and traditions, of old customs, story and song. How would our songs and stories change then, about what would we read or sing in 30 years and what would our children know about fairies dancing in the fields or a princess sleeping a hundred years behind a wall of roses? Just yesterday I thought about our fairytales and old traditions, every country has their own; all this would make not much sense anymore. So your videos in some way also are a "voice" for our old traditions, landscapes and places - and for our freedom to visit all this or live there and fill our hearts with it whenever we want or need. We are born as free people and we care for the world we live in. We need to stay in direct touch with all this (and ourselves), it is our roots. In the times we are in now we can help people to remember their heritage, to ground them and make them love and care for the things they could lose so easily now. Remember, feeling love and being connected will help people very much now, so hopefully they do not forget when it is time to stand up for it.
@LaureninGermany
@LaureninGermany Год назад
It really is a worrying time we´re living through. Some of the freedoms of thought and expression seem to be restricted, people are instantly offended... That´s why I hope to give us all a little moment of escape into a gentler world, to gather strength. Hugs to you, ShadowHall xxx
@shadowhall1501
@shadowhall1501 Год назад
@@LaureninGermany Yes ... thank you! 🙂 But I do not see it only as "escape", it also is a kind of "finding connection" again to where we come from and what matters: The natural world and the beautiful things like cities and villages and the way we used to live - with less on the one hand but so much more well-ness and meaning on the other. Offers like yours help us to remember what matters and what has to be protected, not only a landscape or way of living, but also our emotional richness and the power that lies in being connected and grounded in a free life. It is so much more than a lovely illusion to enjoy in a world full of threats! What you show to us is a part of us and our history, we cannot make a cut right here on our human development and suddenly become a kind of "funktioning machines", emotionally and practically reduced and controlled to be "handled" easier than before. Your videos also seem like "Look and feel, where we come from ... (and see where it all is going now.)" You do not say or mean the second but show the first in a way that goes right to the heart. We already see and hear enough of the second, but the first helps people see what is in danger and find an attitude towards what some want to be human reality soon. So it is not "just" escape to have a little break from all this new s**t, it helps remembering what could be lost for us if we don`t move a bit. Life and living is not about functioning in a way which suits some in power, it`s about loving and feeling, expressing, caring and letting grow in responsibility for all and everything together. There would be a big loss of human values if anything like this would become our future. So having in mind and heart what is and always has been precious to us - life and health, peace and justice, open communication, fearlessness and freedom .. to get in touch again with some of the good things of life makes people stronger, more hopeful and conscious. Instead of feeding our hearts hope, love and confidence, our brains are fed fear and resignation for some time now. I see your videos as a step against it - in a lovely and gentle way. ;-)

It seems impossible to escape. I'm glad you are able to find positive elements about Germany, to help make make you happy. The history about Germanic tribes, actually Europe in general is mind boggling. In 2016 I volunteered on a dig in northern England (The North), along Hadrian's wall. One group found a number of pieces that came from southern Germanic Celts. These finds and the fact that most of my genetics seem to originate from southern Germany and Austria, got me very interested in the ancient history of central Europe. Hope to visit Heuneburg and Hallstadt in the near future to see the displays and reconstructions. Sorry....getting longwinded ...Cheers, Peter

You never need to say sorry about writing a longer comment, you are always very interesting, Peter! I was just watching a documentary about what happened after the Romans left Britain and of course, they showed Hadrian‘s Wall three days ago. It seems to me that it was a mistake to build it, from a Roman perspective. Like giving up on empire expansion. And then Caligula made it too easy not to serve in the army, and that was that. I have become fascinated with history over the last four years. It’s becoming quite a passion, actually. Being on a dig must have been fascinating- and cold, there! Have you done a DNA test? I really want to. I wonder where my eye colour is from. Spanish or Roman? Romania? 23 and me is banned here, I believe.

Regarding genetic testing, my daughter purchased two test for me. One was 23 and me, the other was Ancestry. The results pretty much matched and it both tests also confirmed a rumor about my paternal grandmother. In a nutshell, I'm 50% southern German, about 25%western and northwestern European and 25% Czech and Polish. It was said that my paternal grandmother was a gypsy from Poland ...so I think the genes prove it. Interesting that 23 and me is banned. I wonder what the reason is. All the best! Peter

Don't worry if you don't say anything, I won't tell, my lips are sealed. I think it's very nice how you address the diversity of Germany and then actually show it in your videos. I like that very, very much and it makes me happy. I thank you for that. Every person has to find out for themselves what makes them happy, which places, what things or people around me, that is very individual and maybe not possible every day. For my part, however, I really appreciate where I was born, at what time and what kind of family I have, I'm glad and happy about my parents, my brother I have and the grandparents I had, because I couldn't do that influence myself, so I was really lucky. "...but I'm _hopeless_ at waiting when I have something to _share."_ I've gotten that impression when it comes to Germany; that there's something new to share around every corner. We really have no idea, in the US, the cultural _poverty_ to which we subject ourselves by not _connecting_ with the rest of the world at _every opportunity._ Our attitude toward Germany is: 🤔 "Germany? You mean that country that was divided by the Cold War?" "Well, I suppose, if you want to look to the recent past." 🤔 "Oh. You mean the main European adversary in World War II?" "Well, I suppose, if you want to look to the somewhat _less_ recent past." But of course, this is the US. We have no _idea_ what it is for a country to truly be _historic._ We read about the _First_ World War, the _Second_ World War, the _Cold_ War, and we think we know _Germany._ 🤔 "Germanic... _'tribes?'_ Somehow, a Native American tribe managed to cross the Atlantic to reach _Germany?_ I find that _very_ hard to believe."

It's a really nice place to visit in summer. The 17th century building is still on its original floor plan with the upper level designed as an open gallery with a really low ceiling. There is also kind of an in-between level adding to the baffling premodern design. Along with the Medieval fantasy decor. The local LARP groups often meet there (last I heard, been out of the area for a while) in full costume to play out high diplomacy over a banquet. They have a little backyard and benches in the front so sitting outside is an option. The name of it comes out of a DSA (Das Schwarze Auge, a TTRPG) adventure. When the non-smoker protection law came into effect, the city had to send people into all establishments to check for compliance. They sent two of them into the Keiler because they were scared of the owner. Who was a bearded bear of a man with a gruff demeanor. The restaurant was however found in excellent compliance with a smoking area in a small separate room in the back. So they soiled their pantaloons over nothing, really.
