If more people could actually care about others instead of just themselves then we could update society but everyone thinks everyone else is wrong.... Super frustrating.

🟢 Ladies and gentlemen! The question is whether we spend that time focused on what pushes us apart? or whether we commit ourselves to an effort -- a sustained effort -- to find common ground?. to focus on the future we seek for our children - and to respect the dignity of all human beings?. It's easier to start wars than to end them. It's easier to blame others than to look inward. It's easier to see what is different about someone than to find the things we share. But we should choose the right path, not just the easy path. There's one rule that lies at the heart of every religion -- that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. # I thank you.

Yes, that is one of the pillars of morality, "don't do to others what you don't want others to do to you", a very simple quote but hard to commit to. Everything moral is very hard to fully commit to because temptation will be onto you constantly and if you do not understand the importance of the real outcomes that flourish from morality, you are bound to fail. For example : When people commit to certain principles of morality, they expect their life to suddenly change around them and feel entitled to more than someone who doesn't respect any principle at all. Then why respect these principles if they don't do much to improve life around you ? Because it's simply the right thing to do regardless if anyone does the opposite, and you know you did the right thing while the rest, they'll invent all sorts of plausible answers, even legal answers to justify their immoral acts even tho, deep down, they know. " Fear of loss is what keeps morality away and loss of fear is what morality provides. "

Finally a good talk (and no wonder, that what happens when u invite an actual philosopher instead of bunch of guys more or less pertaining to be the representatives of the very branch of philosophy- scientific method...) and not a narrative spewing one like pretty much anything of recent, is it a sign of TED coming back to it's roots of what it put in on the map in the first place? There is no morality in nature. Morality is a man-made concept. Bees have no morals; ironically honeybees are adopted by the church as symbols of goodness: hard working, self sacrificing, working together and looking out for each other. They do this not because they love each other, but because it's in the interests of their survival to do this. They have been around for about 60m years longer than us, and are fully evolved, unlike us who are dedicated to self preservation at the same time as destroying the resources we depend on, hurtling towards our extinction driven by moral certainties and an inability to communicate properly

Interesting talk. I would argue thst morality doesn't exist. It's the thing that helps you identify what is good vs what is bad. But things that are now bad used to be considered good, jeopardising the reliability what these words actually mean. I personally believe nothing is good or bad by nature and that behaviours that fall under those categories are taught. Back in the day tribes would kill members for being violent or if they were severely injured because that individual would endanger the whole tribe. There might have been some element of revenge at some point but mostly it was about survival. Infanticide was also a thing when there were too many mouths to feed as a result of building settlements and farming wheat. Again, for survival. I wonder where moral thinking first came into play, maybe through religion? Maybe a result to keep order and avoid new issues when our ancestors created this 'easier' life? Like "you can't kill anyone because we need more hands for farming" or something.

Where does one get an objective moral standard without a moral law giver like God for example? Without God, morality is subjective. I know lots of a good people who don’t believe in God and that’s not what I’m saying but how can we know objectively, what is right and wrong for all people without god? Otherwise it’s just based on your own understanding of what is right and wrong and your culture, society, etc. very interesting topic for me

Statistically speaking people with differing abilities are the most discriminated, the most poorly understood, the most jobless... as much so as I would say that society's miss-understandings about what blind people can and cannot do has always been to me more detrimental than my blindness; and I'd always change the former out of the two.
