Does dirt biking HAVE to cost you an arm and a leg to take part in? I’m not convinced, so I gathered the boys up and gave them $1,000 each to go out and buy second hand dirt bikes with, then report to the Lake Station farm in St. Arnaud, New Zealand where we’ll meet up for a series of challenges specifically designed to determine who got the best deal, and weed out the lemons! My 1990 Dr350 is an amazing machine. I outrun 250 2 strokes of that year and this bike goes anywhere man. That 250 is a little sluggish but still sweet

My first bike was a mint 2006 YZ85, that I bought for $1200 Canadian, and then sold it over covid for 2 grand. Point is, watch and check marketplace and craigslist constantly, and you will eventually find a deal.

I had to do this challenge out of necessity of being poor.. lol. Found a dead in barn 03 YZ250. Brought her back from the dead - what a feeling. Years later, picked up a dead Panterra that I also brought back from the dead. It's a good feeling :)

Damn. I like the analogy you do. And you're so right about getting a used bike. I myself got XT600 - same one you show in the shop. With emission laws they used to be $1000 but are now more $2000 in Europe as you can not find a big thumper like that. But it's still a really fun bike for first 2 years restricted power period (it has the exact maximum power to weight ration - everyone in my EU country has to go through that, no matter experience or how old you are). I was looking for a DR350 at first but they're basically unfindable or overprice. I wish I could have found one. It's much more able on trails that the heavier XT600.

My first bike or should I say bikes were a kx60 and KX80 neither running for 100 dollars au. Replaced the clutch on the 60 and had to do a top end rebuild on the 80, totally worth it. They were great bikes.

Absolutely a 1000 bucks is a decent budget for a dirt bike, the key if you have to be patient, finding someone who's selling a bike they don't need not one that's broke and abused, I fot the best bike I've ever had for 1000 a kx 125 and is still my current bike, of coarse the bike needed a bunch of maintaining but doing it all myself except the suspension rebuild saved a lot of money and gave me a great and reliable bike for a fraction of the price of new.

You can easily buy a dirtbike for $1000, i bought mine for $800 and i use it for racing and its an old model but still very good and faster than most newer same CC models
