Yes you can! In this video I show how I apply 2K clear over a very heavily decalled model car body. This is the Fujimi 1/24th scale BMW Z4 GT3 car with the Hatsune Miku Goodsmile Racing 2013 livery.
Here is the link for the decals:

Hello James, great videos and excellent work on the models! Do you ever use acryllic gloss varnish for your models? I use VMS HD Topcoat Gloss for aircraft models, but i wonder if i can use it on car models? I want them to shine, so maybe 2K clearcoat is the only option?
@ScaleModelExperiment
@ScaleModelExperiment 2 месяца назад
Thank you for watching. I have been using 2k for over 15 years now and it’s what I know best. I have seen others use a lacquer clear and polish to impressive results. I think that acrylic clears and enamel clears take too long to cure. Plus, whatever color the clear in the bottle is matters. If it has a yellow tint, don’t use it! It won’t have the optical clarity you desire.
@Triplegix
@Triplegix 2 месяца назад
@@ScaleModelExperiment ok, thanks for your reply, i'll do some tests with acryllic first, but after seeing your videos i think it will turn out in using 2K clearcoats :)
@ScaleModelExperiment
@ScaleModelExperiment 2 месяца назад
@Triplegix as long as you are safe about using the 2k you’ll be fine. proper protection is mandatory (both respirator and fume evacuation). Wet sanding afterwards will make for a perfect finish.

Hi James. I am a recent subscriber to the Channel and I love your videos. For various reasons I don't use an airbrush and use rattle cans almost exclusively for finishing my models.I'm generally very happy with the finish I achieve, except where decals are concerned. Any aerosol clear lacquer I have used seems to react with the decals. Can you offer any advice ? Thanks, John
@ScaleModelExperiment
@ScaleModelExperiment 7 месяцев назад
Hi John, welcome to the channel! The use of an airbrush allows more control of the pressure in which the paint is applied. I get a fine mist of clear from the airbrush that may prove difficult with a rattle can. What you can do is heat up your can of clear with a cup of very warm water and make sure that it is shaken properly. Apply many many thin coats instead of wet coats. The wet coats is what is ruining your decals. It’s the solvent pooling up on your decal and lifting it from the body. Another tip would be to ensure that your decals are adhered completely. Watch my video on “hate decals?” And make sure to let them dry for at least 24 hours before clear. I hope this helps and feel free to send questions.
@user-ru4ox4ho1z
@user-ru4ox4ho1z 7 месяцев назад
Thanks James. Yeah, the wet coats are definitely the problem! Unfortunately, it’s hard to get a high gloss with the mist coats but it’s something I’m gonna keep working on. I’ve also found some lacquers are more aggressive than others. TS 13 can dissolve decals whereas Mr Super Clear is more decal friendly. Our hobby can be frustrating and rewarding in equal measures.😂
@ScaleModelExperiment

@user-ru4ox4ho1z absolutely John, I hope you figure out a method to get a good gloss with decals.

Was wondering if you can clear over decals I applied on my model car tires??? Thank you
@ScaleModelExperiment
@ScaleModelExperiment 2 месяца назад
I found out the hard way that you have to mount the tires to the rims first, mask the rims and then dull coat the decals on the tires. The clear cracked when I flexed the tires onto the rims.

Great tutorial! One question, what psi did you use to spray the mist coat and then the other coats. ? Those decals are stunning!!! Thanks ,Al
@ScaleModelExperiment
@ScaleModelExperiment 9 месяцев назад
Hi Al, I don’t change my pressure at all. I keep it at 20 all the time. I control the pressure by not pulling the trigger back as far. For the wetter coats I move slower and pull back a little further. I’ve been using the same gun for years so I know it by feel. Thanks for watching👍

Can I do bike tank wrap & then put clear coat /lacquer on top of it to make it last longer without damaging.?
@ScaleModelExperiment
@ScaleModelExperiment 5 месяцев назад
I’m not sure if vinyl wrap and lacquer paint can be used together. Lacquer paint shrinks when it dries. It may lose adhesion to the vinyl. I use a 2 part clear that cures chemically and does not shrink or attack the surface it’s bonded to. Do more research to see what others use.
@KingBriju
@KingBriju 5 месяцев назад
@@ScaleModelExperiment you mean lacquer & clear coat are different.?
@ScaleModelExperiment
@ScaleModelExperiment 5 месяцев назад
@@KingBriju correct. Lacquer needs a solvent to evaporate to dry. The clear I use is a 2 part urethane which is a chemical reaction to dry/cure.

I only have access to to spray cans like Mr Super Clear Will lacquer clear melt the decal like some people say
@ScaleModelExperiment
@ScaleModelExperiment 5 месяцев назад
Most likely it will. The problem with using a rattle can is the amount of product that sprays in a single area. If you can spray the clear in fine mist coats and not worry about the glossy leveling caused by too heavy of a coat then you will be fine using it.

Hi John, I have both thinned with their thinner and with Mr Hobby leveling thinner. I have seen others use it with great results but I had less than desirable results with it so I didn’t try it again. It simply wouldn’t cure completely for me and ended up a mess when I tried to polish it.
