Can you climb this? The entire climb to the base of Mooney Falls in Havasupai
I see this question online a lot. People are going to Havasupai and they hear the climb to the base of Mooney Falls is terrifying. Why would you care if you're not sure? Because it's REALLY hard to get permits to Havasupai, so if you're lucky enough to get them, you want to see everything you can see. Yes, you can get to 50 Foot Falls, Little Navajo Falls and Havasu Falls without braving the climb to the base of Mooney Falls. But if you want to see Mooney Falls from the bottom, hike down to Beaver Falls or even to the Confluence of Havasu Creek and the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, you have to make this climb. So if you can't do it, you miss out on a lot of what there is to see at Havasupai.
So people want to know if they can make it. But it's hard to answer that question. Everyone has different climbing abilities and tolerances for risk. The best way to answer this question, is to see it for yourself. So I filmed it and made this video.
Can you make the climb to the bottom of Mooney Falls? I don't know. But now you can see for yourself.
Oh, and if you're wondering if I just didn't talk to the dude who followed me, I did. I spliced together footage from two separate descents. He and I climbed to the top of the ladder section and he decided to turn around and not attempt it. So I didn't just abandon the poor guy and/or just not talk to him the whole time! Just figured that he might not want our discussion on video and that you probably didn't want to listen to us talk the whole time.

I love your work Jerry! I can't wait till RU-vid starts throwing you in the algorithm. With the amount of beautiful content you have you should be at a million subscribers. Thanks for always getting the shot, especially with all of your friends trying to ruin it.😂

Thanks. Maybe one of these days, the algorithm will shine upon me. Then again, this channel is so much more successful than I ever imagined it would be. So I can't really lose. I just love exploring and making videos.

The hardest part is near the bottom when you have to jump on the slippery broken log. And if you climb in the wind you WILL get soaked on the climb from the water fall mist.

I noticed that you were wearing a helmet, was that only to mount the GoPro, or would a climbing helmet be safer? Do folks rope up and anchor to each other?

No helmet. Just a GoPro head mount so I could use my hands. I wouldn’t take any climbing gear for this. Just good shoes and gloves.

This was about as good of a video as I’ve seen of this. I’ve done it all but the last two ladders. The day I was there it was very crowded so lots of people coming up as you are going down. It is hard to see but the mist from the waterfall makes it very slick. There was something about the angle coming down combined with the slickness that made me say no to that last part. You also have to consider that if you do have an issue and fall it will be a very long time before help arrives. This place is very isolated. That being said the vast majority of people that undertake it do so with no issues. I spent 4 days camping down there and can verify it is one of the coolest places on earth. I could t help thinking when looking at the falls in this video of Mr. Mooney jumping off the top of the waterfall that came to bear his name. Thanks for the video Jerry. Glad to see you out and about.

Always hard to tell how difficult/steep things are via the camera. But doesn't look any worse than Angel's Landing. Done that. Key is you went "backwards" to downclimb. My husband always says "it's hard to fall up". As always, excellent vid. Thanks!
@roughster1615
@roughster1615 5 месяцев назад
I’ve done both, Angels Landing is a sidewalk compared to this.
@JerryArizona
@JerryArizona 5 месяцев назад
I usually climb it facing the rocks but had to take the camera angle into account, so I climbed facing forwards for a lot of it. Definitely more secure the other way. Like you're climbing down a ladder. If you could handle the exposure of Angel's, this shouldn't be bad. Neither are that dangerous (imo).

GULP! I know that is steeper than it looks on video. It would take me way longer. My fear of heights happened like needing reading glasses. One day woke up...stuff was blurry. Jerry, thank you so much for letting me re-live this amazing experience! Love the quality of your video, are you using a Go Pro? I visited Havasupai in 2001 and again in 2003, stayed a week each time, so I did this climb several times each trip - it is truly the most exhilarating and memorable place I’ve ever visited. However, back in those days there was only one crude ladder near the bottom with a fairly long drop to the ground. So many memories…The Green Room, the Showers, the Source, hiking to the Confluence for a ‘baptism’, finally learning how to dive at Navajo Falls, almost drowning under Supai Falls, almost dying in floodwaters by Beaver Falls… I wouldn’t trade it for anything! ❤😊

The story I read is the first group of Europeans down there were led by DW Mooney. They thought the falls were impassable until they saw some barefoot Supai villagers climbing up to them. Mooney didn't believe it was possible even after seeing the locals do it, so he used a rope. And ended up falling to his death.....
