Yeah I've been trying out bjj at university but with rugby and lifting as well I feel like my body might implode if I keep it going lol. Definitely agree that regularly doubling up for a newbie to grappling like me is a bit intense

I've been competing in Judo for 6 years now and our classes are 2.5 hours long 3 times a week...I will usuallly lift right before 2 if them and then after the other because it is on Saturday morning...I do a pretty easy session those two days (7x5 on Bench or OHP and two accessories 3x15) becuase if I hit squats, cleans, etc. My legs get destoryed with all the conditioning work we do as well. If we were only doing Randori/sparring and technique work though I think squatting or whatever right before would be fine. Really, it is the intensity if the classes that matter and you don't want your CNS or whatever muscle group to be so fatigued your form breaks down while you're working on stuff. It also doesn't help that I get fatigued easier because i do lift pretty high volume and intensity and I'm 270-275lbs and try to go with the heaviest guys in drills, so if you're lighter you will probably be less inclined towards really detrimental fatigue.

Also obviously it's not recommended to go straight from lifting to grappling practice, but it's the only thing that works with my work schedule unfortunately

That’s fascinating. I have done judo since i was 6 years old. Started lifting when i was 18 and i never had any issues going to judo practice after the gym. On the contrary, after heavy squats i actually felt amazing, stronger even during judo. It felt like the squats were PAP for judo. Important to mention maybe is the fact that i have beaten people who were the top 3 at nationals in my country couple weight classes above mine(i fought in 66kg) and even beaten someone who once place 3rd at european championship for the cadets(66kg). So I wasn’t average by any means. It might be different for heavier weight classes or beginners.

@joocypaleorc2149 I think a lot of it has to do with the classes focusing on conditioning a lot before Randori and stuff that involves firemen carries and other stuff with a partner who weighs 110kg+...also when I squat I do like 7 working sets at high intensity so it's not ideal before a class lol
