The best example is Steve Carell. He has been more dramatic in recent times, starting from "Foxcatcher" to "The Big Short", and this year will play Donald Rumsfeld in that Dick Cheney movie and star as the father of an addict in "Beautiful Boy". Hope he can get his Oscar one day.

@@amystone4684 Truth! If you look closely at, for instance, Identity Thief and Tammy, you'll see a very deep, talented actress. And as someone here already stated: in St. Vincent she stepped away from being typecast as the 'funny fat lady' to great dramatic playing!

@@Jorg-ug3ie yes! I have seen that with many people who typically do comedy. Like say, Robin williams. Like MM, high energy, amazingly funny comedy. Then they do one darker roll and you realize how amazing they truly are!

I knew that already. I've been a fan of hers since Gilmore Girls. The range in comedy and drama was always evident with Melissa McCarthy.

That's quite the idiotic statement; comedy acting is acting, and dramatic acting is not inherently "better."

Calling mine an "idiotic statement" is rich from someone who apparently can't read. I didn't say that comedy acting was somehow inferior. I said that her abilities have been dramatically shortchanged by two completely talentless directors, with whom she has had 90% of her most well-known credits.

I don't what's it with the Feig hate. Even if you despised his Ghostbusters reboot, he still directed her in Spy and Bridesmaids, which were some of the most acclaimed US comedies in recent memory. Mccarthy was even Oscar-nominated for Bridesmaids

@ChrosTV - I can't speak for others, but I find that the humour in Feig's films is extremely primitive. Bridesmaids benefitted from Judd Apatow's screenplay, but Spy and The Heat kept playing on singular jokes - in The Heat, it was McCarthy's caustic persona vs. Bullock's trademark clumsiness. In Spy, it was a number of bizarre non-sequiturs as well as regurgitating the same jokes again and again. In fact, in much of Spy, I couldn't help but notice that Feig & McCarthy had simply opted to carry over her personality from The Heat into Spy. Listening to her dig at the Swedish guy was funny once. Listening to her do it again and again for ten minutes isn't. Feig has absolutely no sense of comic timing, nor does he trust his audience to understand wit without telegraphing it. He's overreliant on vulgarity, context-less gross-out humour, basic slapstick and excessive repetition. I've not seen Ghostbusters yet, but the scenes that I have viewed indicate that it has exactly the same problems as The Heat and Spy. The reason I've chosen NOT to see Ghostbusters is not because it's a female-led reboot (that in itself could have been a great thing), but specifically because of Feig's appalling directing.
