Can you find JESUS through LOGIC?

Why do people make an argument that we shouldn’t use arguments? Dr. Tim Stratton responds with scripture and an example of a Professor at University of Nebraska who came to Christ because of the evidence. In fact, she was so set against Christianity that she said that if Jesus had appeared to her, she would have gone to a psychiatrist rather than church. But the historical evidence for Jesus helped bring her to Christ.

What is logical about trusting 2000 year old religious stories about a god who: Is obsessed with being personally praised (almost every Psalm, especially 98-101, 136) Is small-minded & petty (Deuteronomy 21:11-12) Is cruel (Deuteronomy 7:1-3, Deuteronomy 20:16-17, 1 Samuel 15:3) Is sexist (Ephesians 5:22-24, 1 Timothy 2:11-12) Is racist: (Deuteronomy 7:6, Deuteronomy 23:3, Matthew 15:22-26, Matthew 10:5-6) Demands absolute conformity (Matthew 5:48) Hates being questioned (Romans 9:19-20) Openly promotes war (Exodus 15:3, Joshua chapters 6-11) Condones slavery (Ephesians 6:5-8, Leviticus 25:44, Exodus 21:20-21) Discriminates against the children of immigrants (Deuteronomy 23:3) Is homophobic (Leviticus 20:13, Romans 1:26-27) Exercises extreme punishment against anyone who does not believe in him (John 3:18, Jeremiah 19:9, Lamentations 2:20 & 4:10) But he wants you to be with him forever and ever after because he loves you? Good points. Christians should be the most logical people on earth, but what's sad is we're often not that. I try to be logical and reasonable in my apologetics, and it's an ever learning goal. @coinexchange1761
@coinexchange1761 3 года назад
I disagree, Logic can be used by the devil (and has been) to separate people from God. My view is that you cannot come to God unless He elects you to receive Him. Then, you will have to agree on who He is, what He does and above all else that He is being Truthful and Righteous. Full Stop. To accept Jesus you'd need to accept a couple of FACTS that go against your everyday observations of the world and how it normally is 99.99% of the time. You have to accept that Jesus was born of a Virgin, that the Holy Spirit exists, that He was GUIDED and SENT by God to perform a task in our realm. That He resurrected and is chosen/anointed by God to perform every deed He has been given by the Father. These are all things, that you cannot use common reasoning and logic to ascertain if they real events unless you suspend your disbelief and accept a series of events, that while "unconventional" in the reality you are well acquainted with...are none the less true. Everyone is a sinner on this Earth. None are better than any other. Some have been chosen by God, some are not chosen. Some are chosen but do not choose to believe in Christ or God's testimonies about all the event that have happened until now. (For which they were not present, but which someone else, material or immaterial has given an account of.) This is why Faith is an essential piece of the puzzle. Even if we cannot know, we are told the story and it is up to us to accept and believe; or to reject and use solely our reasoning to assess the recounting of events with which we are unfamiliar with as being possible in ordinary life. By logical reasoning alone, you will not come to God. Unless you have the same experiences described in the Bible, you cannot logically conclude it is true. Though God has indeed done everything He has described, He makes it appear foolish to some and amazing to others. He alone makes some blind and deaf to the Truth and some able to SEE and HEAR the Truth He has recounted through His Son and the many Prophets. Do not be deceived that you can conclude Christ identity can be ascertained by Logic and Reasoning alone. Unless you have a taken a Leap of Faith that some specific event as described are Accurate and True. You will not come to accept Christ as plausible. Instead, you will be lead to the opposite conclusion.

Jesus claimed to be the 'way, the truth, and the life' (from John 14:6). If He was telling the truth - if He is the answer to Pilate's question "What is truth?" - then there's nothing to fear in using rationality and reason in seeking Him, and nothing to fear in seeking out answers to doubts. @@somerandom3247 I think the key may be to include your assumptions in the process of improving your knowledge. Dogmatic ideologies, whether the be religious or political, don't do that and are therefore apt to lead people astray when the failings of their dogmas are taken to extremes. For example, in general it is a good thing to take the text of a document seriously. But when you take the text of your scripture as the inerrant word of your deity, then you are left clinging to outdated insights when the rest of society moves ahead. This wasn't so apparent when knowledge increased at a snail's pace, but since the advent of the Enlightenment, the pace has picked up, and dogmatic thinking has been shown to be obsolete.

The answer seems to me “UNBIBLICAL” ! I think as Holy Scriptures states in St. John 6:44, Acts 16:14, this is God Himself working through The Third Person in the Blessed Trinity Who is The Holy Spirit Who works in us to bring us to Christ ! 1 Corinthians 12:3. I think by reasoning & logic no one can come to Christ. This is denying God Himself ! Titus 3:5, Ephesians 2:8-10, Psalm 106:8. Ephesians 2:1,5, Colossians 2:13 & Psalm 3:8 ! He only quickens us. It’s purely by His mercy & grace alone !!! St. John 1:12, 13. If a person comes to Christ by reason & logic, then Holy Bible (Preaching The Word of God) & Holy Spirit are unnecessary !!! Have you ever wondered why the greatest philosopher’s ever lived & presently living in this world could NOT find Lord Jesus Christ by reasoning & logic ??? 1 Corinthians 1:23. 2 Corinthians 10:5 (AMP).

So, he said the Christians should be the most logical people who look at reason, use logic, and evidence. And, "we honor God by being logical". That's his words. Let's look at general revelation. General revelation is the idea that you can look at nature, see "the creation" and you will know that God exists and that God created the universe. Not only will you know, you will be "without excuse". So, this passage in the Bible, in Romans 1:20, is saying that general revelation is proof that God exists. However, general revelation is not a valid approach in science to determine the truth of your claim (that God exists and God created the universe). General revelation assumes the conclusion without evidence. Looking at nature is not evidence. Also assuming the conclusion (that God created nature) rules out other possible explanations, and so it doesn't prove the claim. Know that what appears to be "common sense" has been incorrect many times in science once the experiment was performed. So, we can't just look at nature and assume there was a designer, who is personal, and who is God.

@philipbenjamin4720
@philipbenjamin4720 3 года назад
Yes Jesus is the word. And he is logical. And yes we should be logical. But saying those things is not the same as saying that people come to faith through logic. There is a simple reason why it cannot be the case - if it was the case then those with greater intellectual capacity would have an unfair advantage. The place of apologetics is to seek to remove wrongly founded intellectual objections in the hope that people will allow their hearts to engage with the truth. It cannot do any more than that. And because I believe that I believe there is only a place for traditional apologetics and not for cultural apologetics. We cross the line when in our apologetics we seek to make Christianity seem apt or useful. Doing so has the effect of contradicting the truth of scripture that we can already all know that we are accountable to God and that we are without excuse. To make Christianity useful is to give the impression that it's ok to make God our servant instead of the opposite. For example the fact that Christianity gives meaning to suffering may seem useful to persuade someone to become a Christian but in doing so we give the impression that it's a good thing to relate to Christianity in respect of its usefulness.

Logic can be a good way of leading one to Christ, the problem with all this is that no matter how much knowledge, logic or reasoning you have and you know that Jesus is true, none of that will matter if in the end you don't have faith. Jesus says if we had faith as mustard seed we would move mountains. If we truly believe that Jesus is real we will not only believe in him, remember the devil also believes in him. But we will Follow him! and Change! God gives us a new heart, a new way of thinking once you surrender to him, and in that journey of knowing Jesus more and more if you keep seeking and asking for The Holy Spirit, you shall receive, but it's not a change overnight, it's a constant grow. But count the cost, it's not easy, and you'll probably will have to leave a lot of things behind, passions, dreams, etc. If your Want and Love for Jesus is more bigger, you'll change, you'll cry, it i'll be hard but you'll see a change, because God's working on you, Follow Jesus today my friends, no religion, no pastor, just Him, it's a relationship, a personal one with The Creator of all, may the Grace of Jesus be with you all.

If one is willing to believe, yes. That's the real question though isn't it? You can dismiss or deny anything if you really want to. Nothing will be true in your mind if you don't want it to be. There's archeological, historical, and prophetical evidence for the Bible and the testimonies of millions of modern day believers who've been radically changed by having put their faith in Christ. There's many reasons to believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Logic can absolutely lead one to consider these things and look into them for themselves. But the ramifications of that knowledge are enough to scare many off. Learning that there is an omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent God who created all things will hold all accountable and judge all things, that we've sinned against Him and are condemned to Hell in our present condition is more than most the proud, self righteous and financially successful are willing to pay. It's all about the will. Do you really want to learn that you're not as good as you think you are? That there's nothing you can do to better yourself in God's eyes or earn your place in Heaven? That you must repent, surrender to Christ and follow His ways, forsaking your own? That you'll go to Hell if you don't repent and submit to Christ as your Savior? Only you and God know that answer for sure. But that's what will make the difference between learning, accepting the truth, being saved and knowing God or not. What is it that you want?

Some Random well first, do you know God? And Do you know what a spirit is? Because it’s hard to understand if you don’t know those things. God is a spirit, Gods word speaks the universe into existence, but Gods word is also light, and truth. God cannot lie. But you have to imagine these things as eternal concepts that create all things not human constructs, but our human versions of them are interpretations of things that have always been. So Gods word being truth sets the parameters and reveals the defining edges of all things and therefore is the reason that anything is and the only thing that can validate anything or invalidate it. Therefore what God says anything is is how it really is, and what he says it isn’t is what it isn’t. So getting to know God is the key to anything in this universe, because it you stick to your own opinions, if they disagree with God, they are actually forming a structure that has contradiction to reality. And therefor are in non reality. Which God calls outer darkness.

Question: Do you think you are a good person? If so, have you ever stolen anything, lied, looked lustfully, or used God’s name in vain? (Oh God, Jesus Christ, etc.) If you have done this, you have violated God’s moral law, you admit that you are a liar, a thief, a blasphemer, and an adulterer at heart. So, if God gave you justice right away, would you be innocent or guilty? Obviously guilty. Heaven or hell? Obviously hell because you are a criminal in God's eyes. Don’t ask for forgiveness, try it in court: Judge, I raped a woman and killed her, but I’m so sorry and I won’t do it again. You would still go to jail because you shouldn’t do it again and you should be sorry. So is there any hope? Yes, there is! Out of love and mercy, God became a human being, Jesus Christ. Jesus lived a sinless life and finally died on the cross to bear the punishment we deserve. His resurrection proved that His death( more accurately, His sacrifical Blood) was enough to pay our penalty, the penalty for our sins. When someone pays your fine, the judge can leave you, dismiss your case, it’s the same with God. Jesus paid our penalty and in order to accept the free gift of salvation from God, we must believe (have faith in Jesus for our salvation, His finished work on the Cross). That's it! God bless you and feel free to ask me any question about this. Romans 3:10 New International Version (NIV) 10 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; Romans 3:23 New International Version (NIV) 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 5:12 New International Version Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ 12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man,(A) and death through sin,(B) and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned(C)- Romans 6:23 New International Version (NIV) 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[a] Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 5:8-9 New International Version (NIV) 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! Romans 10:9-10 New International Version (NIV) 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. Romans 10:13 New International Version (NIV) 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”[a] John 3:16 New International Version (NIV) 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Ephesians 2:8-9 New International Version (NIV) 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

@@maow9240 The Bible does not say stopping sinning or sinning less is required for salvation. The Bible makes it very clear that belief alone in Christ alone saves us. To say cessation from sin is required to go to heaven is making the gospel works based. What does the Bible say about repentance? First of all, in the NT, repent denotes a change of mind (the Greek term metanoia) a change of mind is not cessation from sin. However, a change of mind is required to believe in Jesus's death, burial, and resurrection, and it's salvific value. What does the Bible say about sinning less? It's a great thing to do, but like Titus 3:5 and several other verses say, good things don't get us to heaven. Rather, Jesus death and payment for our moral crimes against God gets us to heaven. We should do good things out of gratitude and reverence BECAUSE we are going to heaven, not TO get to heaven. In conclusion, stopping sinning or sinning less is an awesome thing to do and Christians should do it, but these works do not save someone, faith in Jesus's finished work does.

The laws of logic are grounded by... existence itself. Existence is what it is and cannot be what it is not... Non-existence by definition cannot "exist", in the same way nothing cannot "exist". Existence is the necessary precondition for reality. One cannot say that logic is grounded by an ultimate mind, but that mind be of a married bachelor. That is self-refuting.
@boltrooktwo

Adam Courtney Evidence has proven that time, space, and matter had a beginning. Existence is only measured by those three things and it is illogical to say existence has no cause or its root cause is “nothing.” The cause has to be capable of causing that first beginning and everything that resulted from it. “Someone” has a greater logical stand point to be the root cause of existence than “nothing.” What is your source or quote for the ultimate mind being a married bachelor, in what context?

@@boltrooktwo P1- as you've pointed out, in order for something to "exist", it requires space time and matter; otherwise... it is indistinguishable from "nothing", which by definition can not "exist". P2- God is defined as being outside of space time or matter... it lacks all three of these attributes, which makes it indistinguishable from "nothing" which by definition cannot "exist" Conclusion: God cannot "exist", even by your own admission. Thanks for playing. All of this "evidence" you are referring to is only contingent upon our understanding within this known universe, correct? How arrogant would it be for a person to not just assume, but *assert* knowledge of an outside realm applying only what they know of the inside? Consider : if you ask the question "WHAT is nothing?" you have immediately defeated your own argument. "WHAT" implies something. Nobody knows how to approach the subject of "nothing" without applying a contradiction in terms. Consider this: could "nothing" ever EXIST? Obviously, the answer is no. Therefore, there is no reason to think there could ever BE or has ever BEEN "nothing", ever. It can be soundly argued that everything that begins to exist is a rearrangement of pre-existing fundamental particles. When you began to exist, did you emerge from nothing? Of course not. You were a rearrangement a pre-existing fundamental particles.
@boltrooktwo
@boltrooktwo 3 года назад
Adam Courtney God exists because everything in its order and knowledge denotes there is a God and He manifests inside space, time, and matter so that we can measure that evidence. Existence has to be measured for us to have any knowledge of it. Non-existence is a meaningless term because we only have knowledge of what does exist. You can be blind to knowing something but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. The question of God isn’t if things exist it is why things exist the way they are.

@@boltrooktwo if I'm understanding you correctly, what I'm getting is that you believe the fact that there is order to the universe and everything is fine-tuned, this means there must be an immaterial mind that manifested within the universe to do the fine tuning? I apologize if I butchered that and feel free to correct me. Does this only apply to our less than 1% of the universe that is conducive to life or does it apply to everything, including that which is not conducive to life? Would the parts of the universe that seem to be wasted space be evidence against an intelligent creator? It seems that the greater 'miracle' would be if the universe were not fine-tuned, yet allowed for life anyway. It seems the very fact that the universe must meet certain specifications strongly suggests that God had no other choice but to design it this way, thus is bound by certain external restrictions and is therefore not all-powerful. Furthermore, knowing that life only exists in the tiniest fraction of 0.0000000000000001% of the universe makes the fine-tuning argument quite silly. Finally (as if there aren't enough holes in this argument ready) the very idea that the universe is fine-tuned says nothing other than... it is fine-tuned. Plugging in a god explanation to explain what we do not yet understand doesn't really have much explanatory power other than, god did it. It doesn't say anything about how it happened. There is no way to objectively verify this claim by testing, making predictions, and most importantly, it is unfalsifiable. If humans remained satisfied with the idea that Zeus threw down lightning from Olympus we never would have discovered electricity. Sometimes the most honest answer is "I don't know" because it gives us permission to explore and investigate what the real answer is.
@boltrooktwo
@boltrooktwo 3 года назад
Adam Courtney Within the coherent area of existing knowledge we can then weigh evidence by probability and our innate sense of meaning. This is what we do when we start talking about the percent chance of one thing being true over another. The complex natural world we live in is best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process. Our bodies are made of tiny factories that are so complex no factory we design with our intelligence comes close. Our living cells are factories that maintain themselves and build other factories based on coherent precise information written in them. The chance of randomly forming just one protein that life is built from is more than .0000000... with a million zeroes, then a one, percent chance. The entire universe could be finely tuned for just this planet and there would still be hundreds of factors to support that claim. The precise orientation, temperature, and size of our planet. The energy, gravitational forces, and radiation in the universe all must meet exacting standards for life within tiny fractions of a percent to be just in this one place. Matter and chemicals do not organize themselves to this level of complexity by themselves without a directing intelligence and we have an entire universe of matter and chemicals to observe that isn’t organized to confirm that. Current knowledge keeps expanding and it becomes harder to support the probability of the claim that there is no intelligent purposeful design to the universe.

@Cross Examined I disagree, Logic can be used by the devil (and has been) to separate people from God. Unless you have a taken a Leap of Faith that some specific event is as described are Accurate and True. You will not come to accept Christ as plausible. Instead, you will be lead to the opposite conclusion.

The Trinity and the duality of Jesus being both fully human and fully divine are probably the two main mysteries within Christianity. I learn more about it and I find the mystery continues with further questions to explore and understand - I believe even in eternity with God I'll still be learning about it! God's nature and ways are beyond my comprehension: He created this whole world, this whole Universe and has existed forever. There are many things about God that are inexplicable, I think because He is God. If you could describe Him as A, B, C perfectly, then He would exist of this world. But He exists outside of time, outside of space. He would not be God, striking awe into the hearts of people if He wasn't a mystery too. That doesn't mean He's illogical, it may just be beyond our understanding, but we are encouraged to think about Him all the same and it is the most fulfilling study I've ever done, so I'm not complaining. As to your second point, why do you think Jesus is dependent?

The mind truly is meant to be our most powerful tool, able to plumb the depths of existence through deep contemplation, but there is barrier after barrier preventing most from achieving this. Existence was created in the mind of God, and so logically, the human mind (which is made in the image of the mind of God) is able to know all of existence through thought alone. @@theoskeptomai2535 How do I know God is a God of logic and reason? Because it is evident when one examines the handiwork of His creation; that is, the architecture of His creation. If there was no logic behind creation, it simply wouldn't exist. It can only exist because it is completely logical. Existence follows the principles of logic and reason (that is, logic in reason as used in argument). Think of it this way: if you built up a lengthy argument using logic and reason, it might seem to be coherent and even correct, but if it turns out that the foundation is faulty by being built upon a false premise, then the entire thing collapses no matter how good all of the other parts of the argument were. Existence is the same way: the only way existence itself does not collapse in on itself is because it follows logic and reason. If it did not, it could not exist. The evidence for what I claim is available for all those who have trained their minds like I have, who can then use their minds to plumb the architecture of reality. This is the most believable evidence for an individual: to see the evidence with one's own eyes. It is one thing for me to describe my eye-witness testimony of what I have seen, but it is another thing altogether for one to see it for themselves.

While logic and reason leads to Christ, and people like John Frame do an amazing job at displaying that to be so, the matter of unbelief is never one of proof or evidence. Romans 1 tells us that that carnal man knows the truth of God in his own heart but suppresses it and exchanges it for a lie. While logic, reason, and evidence may be a means by which a soul comes to Christ, the ultimate catalyst is beyond that but a matter of the darkened heart being illuminated by the Spirit and penetrated by the power of the word of God. Paul stood at Athens, the intellectual capital of the world, and he did so as one of the most learned men that history as ever seen. Yet we do not see Paul employing any cosmological arguments or debunking the swoon theory, instead he tells the Athenians that this unknown God is the very one in whom they live and breathe, that they would not be there apart from Him. From there he proclaimed the Gospel straightforwardly. While these things have their place, we cannot forget that the salvation of the lost does not come by intellectual persuasion, for even demons believe and tremble. At the end of the day it is not a matter of proof but a matter of the carnal man not wanting to give up the stolen throne of his life and relinquish it to the rightful King of kings.
