If you have extra power and tow, you don't want the G56. THere's a reason they only put the G56 in SO engine models. It will get hot, expand and increase clearances under heavy loads and extended time. It's great for drag racing or short bursts but the NV5600 will take a lot more heavy use.
@@VBELTandSON Are you running extra HP and doing mountain passes? If so then your longevity is the exception. Again, there's a reason Ram only put them behind the lower output engines. I suggest anyone choosing a trans talk to the owner at Extreme Diesel performance for his take (or your local rebuilder). Cheers.
I don't usually ever comment on stuff but it's nice to see a hard working "young-ish" man these days. I hope you inspire other men. You give me hope that the world isn't totally screwed. Keep it up! Show em what hard work pays for and gets ya! I don't see any handouts needed in your circle. God Bless ya!
Have you ever had problems with 6th gear. My trans shop says it is a small gear and can break if towing heavy up steep grades? I plan on pulling a kx080 in Georgia but not in the mountains, so no crazy long steep grades but we do have large hills. What's your experience on 6th and large hills. Thanks
@@VBELTandSON good because that’s what I just ordered. I just found your other video on the tow rig. I’ve been debating on what clutch to get for the last week. And then it hit me V-belt and son would be the man to ask. Thanks for your reply.
Your not gonna hurt a nv5600 floating the gears I have for years in mine not a single problem just make sure you put 7 quarts of fluid in the trans southbend clutch is junk valair ftw!!!!!
I welded a small sleeve over the rubber isolated portion of the shifter lever between the tower and knob which really improved the feel of my 3250DD NV5600. The rubber got loose and damaged because I needed to heat up the base to get the broken BD short shifter threads out that I used red thread locker on.
the synchros go bad because people push against them when they are trying to float the gear instead of knowing the proper time to slide it into gear. if you try to force it in a big truck like people do in pickups it would grind because they are non synchronized but the synchros in a pickup keep it from grinding but it wears them out
J. Orchard-DePiro yup very true. Just a fun video for the ppl. Remember when I was little kid my dad was teaching me how to float gears. Brings me back
I drive an International 4300 with the DT466E and Eaton Syncro shift behind it as my tow truck and it's a breeze to float. I'm learning to drive our Freightliner with an Eaton 10 speed non syncro semi truck and it's much more difficult but getting there.
Finally got my NV4500 rebuilt and I'm running Amsoil's MTG. Great stuff all around! Smoothest it's ever shifted. I ended up going with the beefiest single disc that South Bend offered and love it. Feels just smooth as the factory clutch but, can hold 900ft/lbs. That's the way to go IMO
I have an 05 high output Cummins /Dodge 2500. I have been shifting without the clutch since the truck was brand new. Haven't had a problem yet. 171,000.
@@VBELTandSON , I don't know what model trans it is. But whatever it is, I shift it as smooth as my 13 speed in my 8V 92 TTA Detroit powered 1985 R model Mack.
My Southbend dual disc is terrible to shift as well and I’m using Amsoil as well Do you have issues when you come to a stop and put it in neutral, then getting it to go into 2nd gear
You need to have super sticks in texas rebuild your nv5600. They have made to parts and super sincros to make it work like a dream. Check them out. Serious rebuilders of manuels
Awesome video. Glad I found it and watched it, as I sit next to my new dual disc South Bend clutch and hydraulics ready to install in my 3rd gen 5.9 cummins with a Nv5600. Especially since my biggest complaint other than being able to slip the clutch in 6th is the horrible shifting quality
I made the same mistake when I ordered a shift tower for my NV5600 lol also, go to Geno’s garage and take a gander at the trans coolers they have for the 5600. I bought them a while back and that made the biggest difference by far. The trans used to get pretty warm after long drives and now it doesn’t. Stays shifting like butter all the time. I’m running a dual disc Valair clutch.
KC Common Rail I’ll check into that. I just ordered the pto cover cooler thing for my g56 gonna try it out on that one and ya the 5600 when I gets worked it does get harder to shift when it’s warm so that sounds like a smart move to add a cooler on that aswell what oil you running ?
I never use the clutch when I shift. Dual disk and triple disk clutches do drag a bit like you said. Floating is the best way to save your clutch. Also, you think that dual disk is noisy in that nv5600, listen to one in a g56. There's a lot to be said for a iron case instead of aluminum. But to each their own
I looked through the comments and didn’t see where anyone asked where you purchased the shifter tower from. I’m going to buy a new one and I see price points everywhere. Where did you buy yours from? Thanks and great content you put out looking forward to see more about the 24v p-pump!
I put a south bend dual disk in my 03 nv 5600 couldn’t get it to shift hardly at all. Put royal purple manual transmission in and it made it a lot better. But for me it’s easier to float the gears for me only time I touch the clutch is when stop and start. 10,000 miles of floating the gears no noticeable change in my already 300,000 mile synchros😂
At first shifting with no clutch on NV5600 is the most dumb thing you can do 🤦♂️ Them syncros don't like it. I know that from rebuilding and modifying them transmissions. Second thing that I'm not sure if is marketing bollocks or what... Any 1 who tried AMS MTL vs Penzoil Syncromesh know that yellow bottle is the winner and so far it is the only correct oil for NV5600 that is still on the market since Texaco not available anymore. Coming to bushing and the stick vibration damper YES. New bush and welding up the stick so it become solid helps to gain precision of shifting in them boxes.
Thanks for the information bud! I just picked up an 05 with a south bend and it’s a pain going into 2nd 3rd and reverse! I’m gonna try the new shifter tower and oil!
I plowed snow in my 01 2500 with the NV5600 and it lasted a good time but the clutch would get hot and the synchronizes went out. Cost a fortune to replace a couple parts and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Even when I sold it I had to shift 5th before reverse every time or it would grind.
B&K Excavating LLC glad I’m not the only one that needs 5th to reverse technique. Even on my old nv4500 I had to pick another gear before I could go to the one I actually wanted. Low miles also. Idk what the heck going on
I replaced the synchronizers on 5th and 6th gear plus the shaft they slide on because those two gears were grinding. After that was done then 2nd gear started grinding so I had it ripped back apart. After it was put back together reverse began grinding and I said I’m not putting any more money in it. For what I paid to have it ripped apart I could’ve replaced the entire thing with a brand new one. I love my Aisin AS69RC on my 2014 5500 now a days so my clutch days are behind me in a pickup anyways, still gotta shift gears in the big trucks, can’t afford a new one with a auto shift yet... lol
I have an nv 4500 in my Cummins 12 valve and my 5.7 Chevy if you actually read the manual it says you're supposed to press the clutch and wait for all moving parts to stop spinning about 5 to 10 seconds before shifted into reverse or you can do as you do I do second to reverse every time as a habit but that stops all the gears and makes it go right in then when I drive my Toyota truck it doesn't like that LOL
Awesome informative video! I'm looking to swap my 06 mega to a 6 speed for better towing. Couldn't decide if I wanted a nv5600 or g56. I currently have a very expensive built 48re and it's great for going fast but it does not tow well. Anything under torque converter lock-up it get hots really quick. Also, very little help for slowing down without an exhaust brake. I've had a few NV transmissions, 2 NV3500s and a NV4500, as well as a NSG370. Amsoil was flawless in all of them! Keep up the great videos!
I love the crap out of nv5600s you can't kill them. But they shift like a dump truck lol. I say if you want ruggedness the nv5600 is choice. But for daily driving a g56 or a nv4500. But that's my opinion. Some people may think differently
I fill both the g56 and nv 1 quart extra. seems to have help with both of them. zero issues in both cases. have heard of going even more extra but there is a point that is to much
its a 12k winch from cough cough harbor freight, jk its been a good winch zero issues. and I would like to get a bumper for the new larry soon. to many deer around here I don't wanna kill the front end but a winch or reciver hitch for a which would be ideal
I've had my HF 12k winch for 4 years now. The wireless remote I bought extra didn't work that great but man that winch works strong. If it quits now I'll get another one.
supperterofsanity thanks for that heads up i almost bought the remote the other day ha but yes for the price can’t beat that winch. I pulled a 19k dead tractor on my trailer with the winch. Double line with a pulley but surprised me that’s for sure
Nice!! Getting to the point were trans is about due for rebuild. It has about 230,000 on it. I may put the suncoast manual valve body in it. But still not the same! Good luck to you and your channel I be waiting for more videos!
Devin Tew yea 6.7 stock and pac brake on the 5.9. I’ve ran banks before and it is pretty even with the stock 6.7 brake. But the Pacbrake takes the cake. Love their products. I filmed the compare video for the pac brake and my new truck. But the 08 also has an engine brake Jake brake style. It’s load leash from Pacbrake so it has best engine brakes around
@@VBELTandSON 10-4 good to know. I have a 17 2500 with 6 speed I love the exhaust brake while towing my 5th wheel. I wanna delete the thing but dont have the funds right now.
IDK what's up with yours Mike, but I've floated my 5600 since I bought my 3500 in 02. It's been 200,000 miles and I'm normally dragging something heavy behind me. Only replaced the clutch once in 19 years. Shifts nice and smooth, even to this day.
How long does it take to wear the syncros out? Had an NV4500, floated it for years before 3rd gear syncro gave out. Could still float it but with the gear split threw off the timing. Been floating my 5600 for a couple years now, using it for lawn & landscape in town every day. Always heard it was bad for them but haven't figured out how long it takes to materialize. Both trannys have 3-400k miles
