Academic rigor is only required for a few fields. Most of the time, the ability to fail and fail better far outweighs the value of the skills you get from academic pursuits. In fact, even in those fields, I'd argue you only need to achieve 60-70% (Depending on how fast you want to learn. For example, 4-year O levels vs 5 year O levels) before jumping to the next level because as you go to the next level of education, your foundations will be reinforced as well. Like DPM says, you really don't need that extra points to 90% for example. Perhaps we can strike a balance by removing the bell curve and giving more resources to students who achieve a minimum 70 marks on their tests to go and pursue projects that let them fail as often as they can. Because too many times I've seen friends who have done well their whole lives then suddenly they go to JC and compete with the top 25% of the country and have a hard time catching up. Or they get As their whole life and then compete with the top 5-15% of the country in uni and they break down because they start failing and they keep failing because no more tuition and get depressed. Or worse, they get into work and are so afraid to fail because real life and real work do not have ten-year series. How do we teach our children to fail often and fail better? If we can get that right, we'd probably be an extremely productive and progressive country
@fedexperimental8417
@fedexperimental8417 Год назад
As the Chinese saying goes, 失败是成功之母. This translates to "failure is the mother of success". Notice the last two Chinese characters, 之母. It suggests that failure is a precursor to success. In other words, failure often comes before success, but failure may not be a pre-requisite for success. Hence, to teach our children to fail better is to first promote a culture that acknowledges failure and demonstrate that with every failure, we now know what does not work. I will argue that knowing what does not work helps deepen conceptual understanding and helps individuals connect the dots to the "right" solution. There needs to be more recognition on the work that has gone into showing what does not work, rather than what will get us to the "right" solution. One can get to the "right" solution without developing a deep understanding of the concept. I'd much rather know what does not work through experimenting than get to the "right" solution straightaway. This is more beneficial in the long run.
@csy897
@csy897 Год назад
@@fedexperimental8417 hmm There is still value in learning what the previous gen has already concluded and then building upon that. There's a saying that if you struggle with a problem, you remember it 10x longer than the person who got the right answer right away. I think you're referring to that. However, I'm not concerned about when a kid would get the right answer or if the kid would get the best answer at all. Rather, I hope that the kid would learn to have a growth mindset. That you failed yesterday, and you will fail today, but you will make sure to fail better, so that is progress. The importance is building better pathways and building things that you'd eventually be proud of. Whether it is a song, an app, a robot, or a hat.
@fedexperimental8417
@fedexperimental8417 Год назад
@@csy897 Yes, struggling with a problem is important for learning to take place. It is not just failure per say, but failing in a productive manner that enables one to recognize the limitations of his/her solutions and therefore seek alternative solutions to improve. However, my broader point is that you need to develop a culture that acknowledges and is accepting (NOT tolerant) of failure in addition to embracing a growth mindset. There is a huge difference between "accepting failure" and "being tolerant of failure". If people are "tolerant of failure", their attitude is "I let you fail because I am told to do so or I have to do so". In contrast, "accepting failure" is like saying "Fantastic, it is wonderful that you tried this and realized it does not work. This is an important point as now we see things from various perspectives. So, what else can we do?". While we hope individuals develop a growth mindset, if we do not create the conditions for growth mindset to flourish, individuals would likely not consider acquiring a growth mindset. What the government can do is to create such conditions (which I am sure they are already looking into). This will not be a walk in the park as it involves the cooperation of various stakeholders. Perhaps government can start this from the top and cascade it down.

As much as I wished it weren’t true, public sector and quite a number of organisations in private sector do look at results, transcripts and GPA. A lot of the times you don’t even get an interview without good results, and that’s not wrong because the competition is just that fierce and employers want to hire the best. I disagree - many youths like me that were brought up with digital technology are acutely aware of “harsh realities”. Everyone you see in this video is no stranger to the tech topics you mentioned - it’s not just one particular generation. Rather than generalising youths as being reluctant to accept harsh realities, today’s youths are raising awareness, asking questions, and finding solutions to said realities. That way future generations have healthier approaches to adversity, and more resources to solve new problems in their time.

This is apparently the only country where the people’s conduct is the determining factor. In every other country, the criterion for easing lockdown is a flattening of the curve, or a falling off in new cases.
Is it their way of deflecting from the government’s handling of the crisis to the people?
There’s no hiding from the truth that we are in this dire situation because our leadership have been caught flat-footed. Asked the other day if more could have been done to prevent the explosion of cases at foreign worker dormitories, Minister Lawrence Wong said: ‘The virus is moving so quickly. If I’d know, I would have done things differently. But no one can tell the next step.”

Being a singaporean and living in singapore for over 25 years of my life, I can tell you how the PAP manages singapore is getting from bad to worse and the PAP is declining as the years pass. With the current GST Hike, water and electricity hikes that is going to be imposed by end of this year 2022 or next year early 2023, many young and middle aged songaporeans are now moving to more freeer or democratic countries like the US, UK, Malaysia Johor and Australia. singapore under LKY was thriving and doing well, but when his son Mr. LHL took over, singapore just kept declining and the PAP open the floodgates to many cheap foreign workers and Singapore PRs. Being a Singaporean & living in Singapore for more than 50, plus family rooted in Singapore 3 generations ago, we can see how life is getting better with the progress of our country. However, some parents have forgotten how to teach their children the law of survival & didn't help them to polish their instincts, ask their children to quit their job when they complain about their bosses, help their children to blame others when they are not doing well, send their children to confort zones when they face difficulties, shower their children with material instead of building their inner strength. The end results are, their children complain about increasing prices but ignoring the fact that entery salary has increased faster than living costs, ignoring the fact that subsequent increments & promotions depending on contributions & performances, thinking that they can't make it in Singapore they can just move to la la land by selling & profiting from their hdb & withdraw all their CPF, without knowing how many professionals such as accountants, lawyers, moved back to work in Singapore under permits. Ask yourself, does the personal income tax rate for income below $300K increase since LKY's time? Does the % of house owners decrease since LKY's time? Does the % of private property owners expanded LKY's time? Does the government provided reskilling & upskilling since LKY's time? Does the government provided job matching LKY's time?

This incident reveals just how the majority of our current elected representatives are lacking in technical expertise and operational experience in estate-management to be effectively managing estate in the first place. So I think the question is rather 'dim' depicting the weaker side of our youths in a MSM Broadcast to the international community. Just my view.

Success means following your passion and it doesnt matter if you are rich or poor. I dont consider good job and high salary as success because you are literally a slave employee trying to survive paying your bills and debt which is a miserable life. Would you say people who are born on rich families successful ones? How about someone who won lottery? Should they rather interview examples of what people would generally say successful people not the ones trying to? If you are asking others how to be successful then you are already a failure. In this world you dont need success. What you need is luck.
@ainlovescode
@ainlovescode Год назад
I disagree with your point that working for an employer in return for financial compensation is not a sign of success. Every human being needs to feel a sense of security. If a salary is what someone needs to afford paying the bills and support their other commitments (family, recreation, etc), then isn’t achieving that stability and certainty a milestone of success? Success is certainly not just high financial wealth. Learning different definitions of success is also important because it differs based on where you are in life.

Most people want to be rich so they can buy everything but even rich people hate bills. No job is secured, people get old and you get sick too. Surviving is more important and more expensive than success. If your goal is to be able to pay bills and if you are then you are successful but the general public wont recognise it as success. For a woman people brand a woman to be successful when she has good career even without kids or family but women also like to get married and have kids so why arent these category recognized as successful?

Gahmen planning for 6.9 million population. Once you graduated, wages will be further depressed. Not forgetting the effects of increase inflation and overcrowding the addition 900,000 foreigners that the gahmen intends to bring in. Current population standing at 6 million already so crowded with no breathing space. Once we reach 6.9 million, unemployment rate will be risen to a new high. mainly hitting the PMETs and new graduates. Unemployment rate in SG does not reflect the true scenario. SG has one of the highest under-employment rate in the world. We have one of the most difficult degrees to pass in local university but also one of the highest percentage of graduates driving Grab and doing Grabfood. Isn't this moving towards the direction of many communist countries where many of their graduates there are working as factory production operators?
