I grew Kentucky bluegrass from seed this fall all the way down in Southern California. Here are my thoughts on the grass type for the Californian region.

Got kbg in Texas. Seeded last fall. Survived the summer this yr and now I got the only green lawn on the block while everyone else is dormant 😅

My KBG front lawns here in NJ (band 6), are still active in Dec 23! We got a sprinkling of rain yesterday, and all of last night's flooding rain...we ran out last night at 5pm before the heavy rain started and I noticed that the grass was actually standing proud the same way it would in the spring/summer mornings while taking in the water and nutrients before the heat and sun set in. Absolutely crazy!

SF Giants and Oakland A's used to use Kentucky bluegrass but transitioned to hybrid bermuda about 15-20 years ago.

I am thinking of doing KBG in Los Angeles.

I've run KBG here in Camarillo for 12 months, it's thinned out quite a bit this summer with no rain and minimal irrigation. It would be even harder in the drier climate of proper LA coupled with the higher heat. I won't tell you to not try, but it's hard to get through the summer, especially with the warm season grass pressure we get from Bermuda and Kikuyu predominantly. If you want to really give it a go make sure you have a lot of organic matter in your soil and plan on buying an expensive bottle of Pylex to kill off the warm season grass invaders from May through Sept. During the off-season however, especially with our off season rains the KBG will do amazing so long as it's not shaded on a north face lot or under a tree. That's my quick take, if you have any specific q's just hit me up.

It will be interesting to see the threshold of heat tolerance of the kbg and it's appearance if you are willing to allow it to be exposed indefinitely next season even if only for the educational demonstration value. I'm sure you can doctor it up to it's greatest potential with cytogro and hydratain along with an array of organic ferts and biostimulants and perhaps your more sandy soil will enable greater rooting depth than most other soil types. The north facing lawn will also be a big plus for the kbg in this situation I can imagine. There could be a single spot-on cultivar that would outperform all the other kbg's but I wouldn't know exactly which one. Idk maybe you could put down 2" of water a week on just that small section when it gets over 100F, kind of high maintenance, it may be impractical though. Whatever you choose to do, it's intriguing. I've used the granular hydratain called moisture manager from site one, but it's like $100 a bag, got 3 but used only half of it this past season, saved the rest for next year. I wasn't exactly sure how much to get, but I think it did effectively help. Was it worth the cost? Well, that's another matter, I guess it depends on how obsessed one is with prioritizing such a thing as a personal interest or hobby in lawncare. The granular is definitely way more expensive than the liquid, but for a big area it is easier to apply imo.

your kids don't seem to be missing the snow and cold much

They are enjoying our new environment for sure but if you ask them directly, they are all very quick to admit they miss the winter weather too. We actually just took a trip back up to Oregon for Thanksgiving week and went up into the hills for a vacation with some friends. Day after Thanksgiving it was 17 degrees or so; we had a great time and the kids LOVED bundling up again and seeing snow on the ground. :)

It was really popular back in the 70s and 80s , everybody switched to fescue in the 90s ) Bayarea) you need to raise the cut to over 3in for in to live and once a week watering is not going to do work.

I haven't looked into the history of KBG in bay area and socal but that makes sense. It's all over the west even though it shouldn't be. Fescue is the other main lawn type I see in our neighborhoods and all the fescue lawns around here look great come January as those lawns are ok with lower levels of sun and the cooler temps. Throw in a touch of winter rain and they pop around here.

what grass seed would you recommend for Orange county california?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 13 дней назад
Either Buffalograss or Bermuda, fescue if you don't want to water much during the summer as it will go summer dormant and stay green all winter during the wet season.

I was doing some filming a few days ago on the front yard for a video I haven't made yet and my daughter came up to me and said, picture me dad, it will make the video better! LOL - I need to do more filming this coming year with the kids; they add a lot of personality I think
