What I Have Learned About Kentucky Bluegrass the Past Three Years
The main thing I think I have learned about Kentucky Bluegrass in the Past Three Years is that it's a little tougher than folks give it credit for. We have some pretty hot summers here in NC and my KBG has held up exceptionally well. It's very healthy and very thick. I have watered it basically the same as I water my tall fescue. If you have trouble keeping tall fescue going strong in the summer then Blue Heat is NOT for you. KBG requires water in the summer to thrive. Do not attempt to grow this turf type unless you are 110% committed to watering during the heat. This grass type will not work in the deep south.

Pete, I am very impressed on how well your Blueheat has performed. I have had 100% KBG for 30 years here on Long Island. I have mowed at 3.5 inches and at 5/8 " and I have always dealt with Fungus in July and August. Our temperatures usually range from 80 to mid 90's during that time with humidity as well. I can see where KBG on the West coast like California or Utah does well even with the high temps they get but no humidity but for it to do so well in the Carolina's is amazing. Keep up the great work sir and yes Connor Ward is the one who got me started as well with the low cut :)

Great info, thanks! I hope folks do watch all the way to the end, because your last point is **critical**. With watering, KBG does as well as the TTTF. But the latter is much more resilient in drought conditions. You can get away with a lot less water with the modern TTTF varieties. A useful test (not better, but different information) would be to have plots that are watered the bare minimum to keep the grass from going dormant, and plots that are watered the bare minimum to keep the grass from dying, and report on those minimum amounts of water (in inches or gallons/area, whatever). My experience with blends is that the bluegrass and rye die off much quicker in hot & dry conditions, leaving patches between the fescue that wind up having to be reseeded (there's no spreading grass left alive to fill in on its own). Some places will enjoy monsoon-like weather in the summer as the climate continues to warm and change, but for much of the US, hotter & drier summers are going to be the norm (and already are for that matter). We're already seeing water shortages, and that's only going to get worse, so trying to keep large areas of lawn with grass that require huge amounts of water to stay alive is less and less practical. Quantifying the actual water requirements not just to the extent of "well, this grass can be kept alive", but more along the lines of "this is the _least_ amount of water you will need in order to keep the lawn alive" will be critical information for people maintaining lawns (whether homeowners like me or professional lawn care folks like you). For my own part, in the Pacific Northwest: I just can't justify the amount of water it would take to keep KBG or ryegrass alive in the summers we are having now. Breaking heat records every year, it would take literally ten **thousand** gallons of water per week to keep my half-acre of lawn alive if it were KBG. With TTTF, I can do a single heavy watering before each heat wave (so far, the hot 100+ conditions only last a few days before we get back down into the 80's), and that's plenty to keep the fescue alive (though not necessary active...much of it still goes dormant), while the KBG and ryegrass that's been in the blends still die off. I've switched to overseeding with TTTF only, so over time the lawn will shift to being much more drought-tolerant, something sorely needed since as a society we've failed to protect the planet from the warming we've created.

LOL. We're mirror images. You're on the bottom side of the transition zone growing cool season grass, and I'm on the northern side of the transition zone growing Zenith Zoysia. I'm slightly north of Richmond, VA, and our temperatures and humidity are pretty neck & neck. I also have a 650 sq. ft. test patch of Rye and Midnight KBG. I'm renovating my soil in the back which sucks. 5.3 pH, iron less than 1/2 the minimal acceptable rate, but the Rye/KBG is still looking good and thickening up, and it was put down last fall. I have 2 dogs so I'm trying to figure out which would be better for the back yard with my 50 and 65 pound dogs. Between the two, I like the Zoysia because it doesn't clump and stick under the mower deck, not at all. I can clean my mower deck after mowing the cool season stuff in the back, then mow the front, and my deck is even cleaner after mowing my Zoysia.

In Michigan, the Greater Detroit area, and alll the towns and cities, in the suburbs, when a new home is built,everyone gets Kentucky Bluegrass sod. We have several huge sod farms and they all grow Kentucky Bluegrass, then cut, rolled up, palletized, and shipped to all the homes. The sod farms are beautiful, and that grass will be ready to be shipped in the next several weeks to months. That being said, all the homes that have KB sod also has an irrigation sprinkler system. That's huge here in Michigan. I've never seen a sod installation tthat didn't have sprinklers. If you have KB then you must keep the water flowing, and that's usually every other day for 10-12 minutes to keep it green and healthy, otherwise it will burn, scortch, and not look green, and will show signs of stress.

The problem is when it's hot and the humidity drops, you have to pound it with water. My Yard is 100% KBG that is irrigated. Right now it's sunny and pushing into the 90's with moderate humidity. I just want to point out one thing that many people who love their grass don't consider. That is, that by never allowing your lawn to experience a few days of drought, you are enabling a very big mosquito and fungus gnat problem. In nature, there is a system of checks and balances and when we think we're smarter than God, an abundance of harmful insects are the result. It is very bad to run your sprinklers every single day. By allowing the top layer of soil to dry out, this drastically reduces the insect population. Now my first love, before I became a gardening junkie, was a grass junkie so I still have a very green lawn. That being said, if it can't hack it on it's own without water for a few days in the summer, you should be looking at a different grass. An established lawn should be able to send it's roots down in search of water and should not need to be babied.

I think to say Bluegrass doesn’t do well in the south, it’s misguided. Bluegrass probably doesn’t do well in clay soil plus the heat. So if you’re going to plant it in “garbage soil” (clay) and not water it much, you’re not going to be successful. Remember, up north, the glaciers plowed millions of tons of topsoil down out of Canada and planted it south of there, in southern Ohio and east, and west and south of there. So, they have very thick topsoil, 12”, or more thick. If you have good topsoil to plant in and keep your grass watered, plus don’t cut it too short (1” is way too short), you’re not going have a problem with Bluegrass. I think we cut ours around 2” or more, in height. It’s way better than fescue. I’ve wrestled with fescue for years, and it’s a pain in the butt. Good video, Pete!

I'm from Eastern KY and always heard bluegrass but idk why they call it tht? I mean we do have pretty grass and looks nice but why blue? I mean I guess it may have a bluishness to it compared to other grass but it's still not blue blue lol

Please share your opinion about overseeding a newly established (1 yr old) 100% KBG lawn in the fall. Do you agree with Connor’s approach to use PRG for the overseed given the quick pace of germination?
@GCITurf

I do not. I want a kbg yard. I don’t want any rye in it at all. I’ll be patient on the kbg. Mine came up in 7 days last year. That’s not to awe full long

Is there anyway to speed up germination like putting the seat in the freezer or is that a wives tale also once a germinates can you spray 5 - 0-5 on a weekly basis

You're doing great work, Pete. On your last video, you had mentioned how you had dumped "boatloads" of humic on the TTTF over the past 10 years, that you're getting ready to smoke off. Do you do more than 2 applications of humic per year? Do you drop it down monthly? I've put a couple of bags down in the front this year, along with my fungicide applications, and the grass is doing really well. I also stopped using my roller for the summer, which I had mentioned in a previous comment. I've battled disease for three straight years. This is the first year w/ no fungus in awhile. Anyway, how often would you use humic? I'm debating whether or not the success this year is related to humic and thinking about using it more often.
@GCITurf
@GCITurf 3 года назад
I use humic monthly. Sometimes twice a month.
