Speechless... Your friend who plays is a genius... Your music is really incredible... In my simple opinion, it doesn't matter how cheap or expensive it is. The interpretation matters and you, sir of the flute, are at a god level!

Each of these flutes produce an unique sound and originated from a different country. The slide whistle originated from USA (1900). The flute powell originated from France, a popular orchestra instrument - a very advance, versatile and complex instrument. That said, the flutist really can make that insanely expensive instrument shine. How exactly did he get two sounds at once out of it? Of was he just doing that accompaniment sound while he wasn't playing the actual notes and just immediately returned to it? Awesome effect in any case. Also, those trills were something else.

As long as it is in tune the timbre of the sound is merely a matter of personal preference. Some people genuinely enjoy the sound of a penny whistle, an ocarina, or native American flute over a recorder, concert flute, or pan flute and visa versa regardless of the price differences. Unfortunately, some preferences are inherently more expensive due to their construction process. But all well-tuned flutes have their own unique charm and shine the brighter than the other flutes in their respective contexts and applications. Other factors include the range and the difficulty of playability in which there is usually an inverse relationship not always. Another important factor is whether or not it is chromatic international A=440 equal temperament tuning which will let you play with most other 1st world musicians from around the world. Also whether or not the flute can be tuned to alternate tunings such as a pan flute by changing the length of each pipe by moving the corks at the bottom or if you can bend the pitches for microtones such as the ocarina can by adjusting the breath pressure with the same fingering. Flutes are the original synths, they are all cool. They all have strestrengths and compromises regardless of the price. There is no perfect flute only the perfect flute for you 🙂
