How do you speed up your fish tank / shrimp tank cycle? Is it even worth it? What are the pros and cons of "instant" cycling? When should you avoid this altogether? All this and more in today's video!
Spoiler alert! The fastest way to cycle a fish tank is by adding a filter or filter media from a previously cycled tank into your new aquarium. You are adding the beneficial bacteria in your tank and it will spread faster than starting from scratch. The beneficial bacteria helps to break down ammonia into nitrate which is far less harmful to our livestock!

I am cycling 3 new tanks so this is good timing. Good tip on overdosing ferts to start the tank.

Hope it helps! I have 4 more to cycle haha

man I was "instant cycling" my tank without realizing it, although the sponge filter I used in my old tank wasn't working right so I put in a new one to filter and kept the old on in the new tank just sitting there, I hope that works out just as good, I'll give it 2 weeks before putting in my Crayfish. I also really love the clips and sound effects, they're really cool!!

Just test the parameters if you're not sure. Actually just test the parameters lol. It's the only way to know if it works. Thank you! I try to have fun haha

@@BobMossNanoTanks I will test the parameters, I set up the tank money, it's a 29gal and I'm really excited to have it. I'll keep testing over the next 2 weeks to see if it's safe to get a crayfish to put in it.

Sweet video, I have had good luck with the "instantly Cycle" following this format ! Love the Sound effects and video clips 👍🦐

I dont have any issues with Caridina on inert substrate but my pH is 6.0 to 6.5. Great videos though and love the new tanks!
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 2 года назад
How is your water that low pH? What are your other parameters? I have seen tigers live on inert but its rare to see the more sensitive types thrive on it. Not saying it can't be done!

What about squeezing a dirty filter in the substrate to add bacteria and adding leaf litter for more bio film and bright well substrate clams no spikes in ammonia and I had success with it
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 2 года назад
oh 100%, I end up doing that when using the old sponge anyway. I suppose I forgot to mention that specifically! Leaf litter won't help the cycle but it will for sure help the shrimp! I have heard mixed things about bright well. It's hard to get in Canada, though.

Hello, I love the video ! I am quite a bit late to this, but I am planning on raising some Amano shrimp for a school project. The problem is, I don't have enough time to properly cycle the tank because my project is due in around a month. Thankfully found this video ! It provided a lot of helpful info, but the problem is I don't have any tanks other than the one I am planning to build. Is there any way that I could instantly (a week or so) cycle a shrimp tank without an old filter? If so, will I be able to follow the basic steps you mentioned in the video? Please let me know !!

Short answer, no. Nitrifying bacteria takes time to establish, while some products claim they are able to create an instant cycle I do not believe these claims. They may aid in establishing the bacteria colonies a little faster but it takes time. Your best bet would be to find a friend who has an aquarium and ask for some of their filter media. Maybe a local fish store would help you out as well if you explained the situation.

I'm giving the instant cycle a shot now. About 5 days in. Its a 10 gallon heavily planted with a betta and 2 Japanese trap door snails (check these out if you haven't seen them. Got 2 with turquoise and black shells). Put in a seeded sponge filter from my other tank and have dosed heavy with prime and stability. Pretty consistent .25ish ammonia with 0 nitrate or nitrite. I'm feeding the fish, adding some bacter and there is a little dead plant matter I'm leaving in for snails and ammonia. Is it possible the plants are sucking up the nitrates and nitrites faster than they can show up on a test or am I just about to get my ass handed to me with a bacteria bloom in a few days? I'm trying to be pretty moderate in feeding.

Honestly, it's hard to say without seeing the tank myself. I would hate to give bad advice. If you are worried, keep dosing prime and try something like stability to help with potential bacterial blooms.
@jakefwtx4214
@jakefwtx4214 2 года назад
@@BobMossNanoTanks Yeah, that's the plan. Just dosing for a few more days and slow rolling the ammonia.
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 2 года назад
@@jakefwtx4214 good stuff. the prime keeps that ammonia from hurting your fish. the only downside to this instant cycling is how much testing fluid you end up using haha.

nice video bob! bob, i couldn't understand well on the video but do you usually add bacter ae in cycling tank everyday?
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks Год назад
thank you. You don't have to add it everyday, it really just helps kickstart the biofilm growth for your happy little shrimps. during cycling, just use at your own discretion :)

Setting up a all natural potting soil substrate tank with a sand cap will instant cycle a tank.
@Gabriel.terluk
@Gabriel.terluk Месяц назад
No, you need aquarium water from an already established aquarium to “seed” your own with bacteria
@tylerwalsh7587
@tylerwalsh7587 Месяц назад
@@Gabriel.terluk not quite. The bacteria found on rocks or substrate is what allows ammonia to turn nitrites to nitrates, which is carried into the water. But plants already do that. So you can skip the entire cycling process by just planting an insane amount of plants

This is all so confusing 😅 I have like 6 days to buy a new tank, filter, everything and cycle it before I put in an angel fish. Its my brothers and its killing all his guppies! I dont want to hurt the angel fish putting him in my tank, I dont know what to do how do I cycle it so quickly
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 6 месяцев назад
You can do what's called a "fish in cycle". Basically you're just dosing Prime to neutralize the ammonia until the bacteria establishes itself.
@SnarkyRC

How I instantly cycle an aquarium is, I put a bag of Biomax from an established filter thats at least a month old. Then I put a new bag of Biomax in the old filter so I always have seeded media for future tanks.
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 6 месяцев назад
great way to go about it. i've started seeding sponges in my cull tubs for use in future tank set ups.
