Hi, as an ex importer and breeder for many years, I would like to say that your videos are very informing and yeah, I always said keep it simple. If I may add...I agree with you. I use to cycle a new tank before a shipment by doing your method of using old filter material from another thank. Its free and fast. Keep up the good work..from your fellow fish nut from over the northern boarder.

I agree with not using the ammonia to do a fishless cycle. I also use the bottled bacteria by nutrafin with no problem. Did try API & still had a fight with nitrites. Excellent video. I use prime, give it a good half hour circulation & add bacteria. When I did fight nitrites I used Stable by Seachem to get thru it. No fish loss.

Wow! I've been watching so many youtube videos on the nitrogen cycle. I learned a little from watching those videos, but I still didn't fully understand. Now, after seeing your video I understand the nitrogen cycle. You explained it the best " we get rid of the nitrate by doing water changes because a bacteria will not get rid of it" thanks for your good and smart way of explaining.

+Darkcloud1983 Its surprising how little some petstores know about what their selling. Just be aware also how much water you need, goldfish require 50L plus per fish and are much harder on the water+filter than tropical fish.

just started watching your vids and like them alot so far, so keep up the good work! my question is, I am planning a new tank - going from a 40 gallon breeder to a 110gal tank in the future. I have an aquaclear 50 and a fluval 206 running on it right now. the plan is to seed several large capacity sponge filters in the tank before the upgrade and then use the fluval 206 for some mechanical filtration needs and all of the chemical needs once the sponges are established. the 40gal breeder tank has about 10 mid sized semi adult cichlids in it reaching no more than 3-5'' but a few will grow larger such as my bumble bee etc. do you think my 110 will go through a nitrogen cycle if I reuse already established filtration, subsrate (established pool filter sand) and decor? Also what are your thoughts on seeding filtration? if the current bio load is being handled by already established media will added filtration even be able to seed? (the last question seems like something a nube would ask lol but I am kind of new, I have been keeping fish for a year and keeping african cichlids for 9 months)

Great vids. Love them! My technique is this. It takes me 1-1/2 weeks to cycle but when done I add in about 10 to 12 inches of fish per 35 gallons right away. Never had an issue. 1) Let water sit in new tank for 2 days to get out chlorine (also add water conditioner) 2) Take sponge from old tank and put in new tank. 3) As you add in sponge also add in the bottled bacteria (Love Marineland) 4) Add ammonia to about 2 ppm 5) test regularly 6) when ammonia goes to 0.5 bring up to 2 ppm again. 7) Do this until 2 ppm of ammonia is gone within 24 hour and nitrite doesn't show up. (In the beginning ammonia will go away but nitrite lingers) So if you add 2 ppm of ammonia in morning, by next morning there should be no ammonia or nitrites. Tells me the bacteria is growing rapidly. 8) Nitrates are usually high now. Do a 30% to 40% water change and let add in water (like letting gallons of water sit for a week in a cabinet or something and use that). 9) Add lots of fish! Works for me so thought I share.

The video is nice, and informative, but I am surprise that someone that seems so knowledgeable has never done the "fishless cycling method". In my opinion, and I have been keeping different species of fresh water tropical fish for over 40 years, the fishless cycling method is faster, easier, and spares the lives of many fish that often die while tolerating high levels of ammonia and/or nitrite that inevitably occur during cycling. Another point I would like to add, is about the water changes; it is actually recommended that partial water changes be done while cycling fish tanks conventionally (e.g, with fish in it to produce ammonia; as very well explained in the video). By doing water changes beneficial bacteria (nitrosomonas and nitrobacter) are not removed since they are not free-floating, but attach to any solids present in the tank (filter, glass walls, decorations, gravel, heaters, etc...). Again, just some constructive criticism. There is good literature about the "fishless cycling method" online.

Hello john love your channel! I learn so much. I am newer like one year or so to aquatics. I have an yellow Africa cichlid. He or she was very aggressive towards the other cichlids I have all the same size. I Removed let's say him from the 55 gallon to a 10 gallon by himself (sick tank) Just to see how his tank mates react without his aggressiveness. Well another tank boss just took his place. Question is. He changed from yellow to a white ish color almost albino. Both tanks are cycled. Well a few weeks later I replaced him to the original 55 gallon. He went back to full yellow. No fish where ever injured fins, scales from first time he was with them. Just very dominant and certain fish would hide all the time when he was in the tank. I will let time work this problem out unless there is health issues. But any ideas on the color change? These are only petco juvenile cichlids. That's why I say he or she:)

I just set up my 75G tank that has been sitting empty for years (my 28g and 7.5g salt water reef aquariums have been keeping me busy), and I'm planning to keep African Cichlids like I have in the past. Thanks again, since now I have an idea as to what to start with when I'm going to add my Cichlids! I did use the API quick start, but the lady in the fish shop told me that I was waisting my money, since how can bacteria be alive in that little bottle? I added some Argentinian tetras to get the cycle going and they seem pretty happy to me. But if you trust this stuff, then so will I!

hello! I just bought a larger tank for xmas(35-55 gallons) for my three gold fish. Ive had them for about three years now in a 25 gallon tank. I wanted to get a few more goldfish for my older ones. If i transfer all the old rocks, fake plants, and filter to my new tank will I still have to do this cycle? This cycle actually is really new to me as ive never heard of it before when i won these fish at a fair so long ago. Theyre just goldfish and so when i got them i just acclimated them to the tank and did water changes since and they have lived what id like to say a comfortable life. Would you recommend I do this whole process if i get like five more gold fish? Ive heard that they can withstand high ammonia levels but i cant be sure and i would like some advice so that they will be happy and healthy. Thanks, and happy holidays

I know this is an old video, but I’m still trying to cycle my tank before adding fish (Betta) for my daughter. Yesterday I noticed what are likely mosquito Larvae down in the gravel. I know that fish usually will eat these, but since I’m doing a fish less cycle (and it’s taking forever despite adding beneficial bacteria in a bottle) I’m curious how I should go about getting rid of them before they hatch and we have a house full of mosquitoes. I was thinking about buying a minnow or two from the local bait shop and letting them go to town and releasing them into a lake if they survive vs trying something like “mosquito dunks” but I’m worried these things will hatch before they get here and take effect (if they even work). What would you recommend? Also confused as to why I have them in the first place. I have the pump/filter running wide open during cycling and it’s a 10 gallon tank.

I have a new 25g tank that's been up for about 3wks with 2 live plants, 2 danios and 2 skirt tetras. I used eco-complete substrate and added micro-lift special blend as well. I've been testing the water and ammonia, nitrites and nitrates are all at zero, but i just started experiencing foamy bubbles on the outer surface of the tank. Been trying to search for causes but can't seem to get a good explanation. Do i need to do a water change?

I may do one more water change of 25 percent if nitrates are still high? Do you agree?

Hey John good video I enjoy watching your vids . I am going to set up a 125 gallon african cichild tank and I have had Algie issues in my current tank. so I am blacking out the tank and using accu clear to get it all together . i have filter floss in at the moment and old filters in a bucket . are my filters going to be okay to put back in once I clear out the algie or will they be bad as well . I asume if you say they are good then I can later use them to start up the big tank . please get back to me thanks

So wait do i just add water from the tap put some conditioner in it and add the bacteria and let the filter go does it work? And also should i add the fish and produce ammonia and add the bacteria so and let the chcle go. I actually dont understand

Add water, add beneficial bacteria (as described in the video), as well as the filter(s). Then let the tank run WITHOUT any fish, for a month at most. Then, test the water - if all perimeters are ok, then add the fish. If you add the fish too early in the cycle, they will die.

Thanks a lot for the great info, I think I found all the answers I was looking for to cycle my new tank. Was just wondering how long does it take if I use nitrofin cycle?
