Isopods are some of the best pet invertebrates! Keeping different isopod species together: is it a good idea? In this video I talk about the possibilities and risks of cohabbing isopods.

How dare you refer to it as some "little thing?" Being the first to comment on a RU-vid video is the single greatest display of superiority over our fellow humans. You are literally better than every other person in this comment section - you have already taken the first appropriate step (announcing the fact that you are first), but you have failed at the second - rubbing it in. There are only three kinds of people in a RU-vid comment section: - the first commenter - those who admit being inferior and jealous - those who lie and deny being inferior and jealous Being the first to comment is being a king among peasants.

I once kepts powder blues and dwarf whites together in a roach enclosure for clean up crews. For a while, both thrived together. But after a while, I started seeing less and less of the dwarf whites and lots of powder blues until I stopped seeing dwarf whites all together. The powder blues definitely outcompeted the dwarf whites.

Great video Rus! I've kept A. nasatum and A. vulgare together for about a year and they have yet to outcompete each other. They have a huge enclosure and I think the size of the enclosure definitely has an impact on the likelihood of species outcompeting each other. Some species are nearly impossible to keep together but some armadillidium with similar care requirements can thrive together in a large enclosure with plenty of resources.

In case anyone was interested, I kept porcellionides pruinosis and dwarf whites together for around 2.5-3 years (initial introduction was accidental) in a 6 qt. The substrate was very thick however (~3 inches) and it was the bin that got the most supplemental food on account of it being the one I would test new foods on first. Dwarf whites were almost never seen at the surface but had lots of room to burrow, and I rarely saw p. Pruinosus anywhere other than the surface. I did separate them now but it seems like the two species were able to have almost totally separate niches. (I'm not suggesting anyone try this, still don't think its the best idea) (Also a detail that I remembered, the surface was usually very dry but with some more humid hides while there was a good amount of moisture below the surface)

Hiya Rus! Ok, LONG question, so if you cannot attend to it, I understand. I would like to do this long term, but would love feedback. I have a colony of Spinicornis, and a colony of Canyon Giants as I call them. Both have a relatively overlapping range. However I’m noticing my Spinis tend to be more surface minded, in leaves and on the wood. Whereas I’m sure YOU know, my Giants have a propensity for burrowing more. So what I’m thinking about doing is, having my main 2 colonies with each species isolated. Then I want to start a 3d bin, with both species in there. I want to keep it larger and well stocked. I think if I provide food and shelter in abundance. Monitor them frequently (I’m a disabled veteran, unable to work, so I have time). And then, as mixed colony #3 starts to get (insert some determined thing, be it population, time, etc) in need, I can pull out X amount of Spinis and Y amount of Giants, based on the amount I feel should remain IN the mixed bin. Then take those removed, and put them into the enclosure by appropriate species. I want to do this to see if it will work, but also I think (I could be way out in left field here) that if I can introduce some competition, it could make feeding and mating habits more frequent. If I DO do this, I was thinking a larger enclosure, less tall and more wide. I’d love any feedback you have in regards to this. It’s not anything I’m rushing into, so I have time. If you can’t reply, no worries but either way, I hope all is going well! Go easy. Me

Would two different isopod species be able to live in an enclosure with different microbiomes? Let me explain. I have been looking into getting some small, arid gecko species(coleonyx, tropiocolotes, or stenodactylus) later this year, and have been considering options for a bioactive vivarium for them. In such, I have learned that in some desert ecosystems, there are microbiomes within each habitat, such as cool, moist areas under vegetation amidst dry, hot soil around it. These microbiomes can support other species that can't live outside the microbiome. In a terrarium, a similar habitat can be created, where humid hides, water bowls and live plants can create moist areas that become microbiomes within the terrarium. I know that there are a few species of isopod, such as certain armidillidium and porcellio species that can happily live in drier habitats, but there are others that absolutely need a moist area within an arid habitat in order to survive. Two of the best candidates for my future enclosure that I have found are giant canyon isopods (porcellio dilatatus) and powder blue isopods (porcellionides pruinosus), both of which occupy a similar niche, but (from what I've read) giant canyons can tolerate a drier enviorment, whereas powder blues will pretty much stay exclusively in the moist areas. I'm not certain if this exact combination would be successful, but I would think that having multiple microbiomes within a larger enclosure would bear the best results in co-habbing isopod species.
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 3 года назад
I see what you’re saying, and creating substantially different microhabitats within an enclosure might very well help, and it sounds like a fascinating experiment. However, powder blues, in my experience, are quite tolerant of dry areas ( see last week’s video on isopods for arid setups), and so they would still probably compete with the giant canyons.

Hi! I'm currently thinking about keeping P. haasi and A. maculatum in the same large sized bioactive leopard gecko enclosure. The zebras are already established, but not too big in numbers, the haasis would be newcomers. The enclosure has plenty of leaf litter, moss, plants and also some live moss around a large humid built-in laybox. There's a lot of space and good airflow. Thought of trying to cohab them since the haasis are a bit larger and like it drier. What is your opinion?

@Aquarimax

This happens fairly often in the wild, and I think it relates to relatively large spaces and abundant resources, so the competitive exclusion principle doesn’t apply yet.
@fatbap
@fatbap 2 года назад
Good video, but there is one small issue here that you didnt really address. Gauses law states that "...two species competing for the same limited resource cannot coexist at constant population values." We can get around this quite easily in a vivarium by increasing the food we provide, meaning resources arent limited, but also by favouring the less prolific species, by offering the food in the areas they prefer to congregate for example. Just a thought for people planning on housing multiple species together.
@thongvo7754
@thongvo7754 8 месяцев назад
still, even if you can endlessly provide food, the terrarium is limited space, with limited air, moisture/ water, so eventually 1 population will dominate the others. I think you can prevent/ slow down the process by provide different type of food., cuz different species muss have different preference of food, and/ or do population control, by yourself or other animals/ predators.

So I have peach isopods and orange vigor isopods, I only have 2 peach isopods left as the others have been outcompeted by the dwarf whites, I do not have any in with the orange vigor, can I mix the peach isopods with the orange vigor, or should I keep them separate, I also have rubber ducky isopods but I am having lots of trouble breeding them, any tips? Edit: and one more question, are dairy cow isopods supposed to get about an inch long? I have some and they have been getting that big
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 2 года назад
I would not recommend putting the peaches with the oranges…though if you only have two and they are both males or both females it wouldn’t be a big issue. Rubber duckies seem to like it fairly Moist but with good ventilation…and if the group is small, not a huge space . Dairy Cows can approach an inch in good conditions.

Hiya, I was just wondering what you think might be a good species to keep with giant orange woodlice? I have two set ups including them, one that’s thriving with my giant African millipede and another with just the woodlice on their own, the spaces are both very large so I’d like to add another species of isopod to the one that doesn’t have my millipede in :) any thoughts?
@Aquarimax

Hi! Kyle of Roach Crossing indicated that Merulanella sp. Vietnam does well with many isopods, as it occupies a slightly different nich than most. Could be worth a try!

@@Aquarimax thank you very much! I’ll give them a try 😊 a last question if it’s okay, do you know if there are any that are compatible for breeding them? When I bought them they were just labelled “giant orange wood lice” but they look like porcellio laevis “orange” (smooth, vibrant, white underside and darker line along their back, although I’ve seen some with white patches on their backs the past month!) I’d love to be able to create some variants but am also happy just having the cohabitating tank mates you’ve suggested if not :)

Don't have any experience with long term keeping isopods. But I have a story! I had bought powder blues to be the clean up crew for my young iguana a few years back now. She was still hand size at this point (green iguana, red morph mind you) and I noticed I just wasn't keeping a population of these fast breeding isopods in her enclosure.. Fun fact for anyone trying to give their iguana a bioactive enclosure.. if they are young they will hunt and eat bugs.. Vet visits and everything confirmed she was 100% healthy, no lack of vitamins or anything.. got fed 2-3 times a day depending of fresh fruits and vegetables.. Still hunted down every powder blue I had in there to eat them.

Over population is a problem no matter if it’s the same species or different ones. Hence the term a “crash” when an entire colony dies. Why not just feed your isopods so there is plenty of resources?
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 4 месяца назад
If only it were that simple 😁 plenty of food can reduce competition, but part of the idea behind competitive exclusion is that one species usually has an advantage over the other in a given environment. Let’s say there’s plenty of food, but one may reproduce faster than the other, or more aggressive at defending hiding spots. Over time, even a slight advantage can cause a decline in the other species.
