I actually did UberEats this summer in Toronto. Really interesting experience, the pay was fine but I found the exercise and just the opportunity to explore my home city was the greatest part about it.

Having signed on with Postmates and Caviar in Portland: Postmates sucks, not worth your time. Caviar is aight. Caviar pays fairly. I consistently made around $12/hr + tips w/ caviar. I've had a few "golden" hours where I made 30 bucks/hr two hours in a row maybe. Depends on demand/luck. The key is Caviar pays you for riding the distance from where you receive the job to the pickup + pickup to customer. Also the dispatcher is a human being not a stupid proximity algorithm like Postmates, and Caviar doesn't make delivery people place orders, so I literally walk into a restaurant and grab the order 4 out of 5 times. Very efficient. Better for courier and customer. Yeah riding a bike in traffic is a skill. Drinks/soup suck to transport. Get a front rack on your bike to keep the food level. Expect to ride about 40 miles/$100. My biggest day was about $150 which is pretty sweet for a college student. But after taxes, bike maintenance, etc. it's still lackluster. Not a career. Fun as fucc. Except when shit goes wrong and customers get salty.

All the expenses as a bike messenger can be written off. (Components, tools, lubes/degreasers, food, phone bill, bus fare etc) You should not be paying the government a single dime. I in fact got a nice return this year. So the 12 or 20 or 30 bucks an hour is truly that. Where as a normal in-store job might pay $15/hr but then you have to pay the government $3-5 of those dollars, leaving you with 10-12. Plus, you have to work on days even when you don't wanna and you can't work much more than 40/wk without being employed somewhere else adding even more responsibility. Getting "hired" will soon be a thing of the past. Everyone will soon have their own business with machines and computers doing their labor, or work as an independent contractor.

except it's happening more and more. He's not saying that there'll be no more jobs but that the way we "work" will be very different with a lot more jobs going to become this type of style instead.It's cheaper for the company and allows people to choose their own hours for real

I am a student and I do foodora occasionally in Toronto. I earn about $30/hr CAD (sometimes way more or a bit below) with the tip but I am the top 5% rider in term of number of deliveries per hour. It is enough to afford a living for a part time job i.e. rent and food and some entertainments, while in a school. BUT, it is not easy. You have to go all out in rain/snow, and must be very swift, not at just riding but also locking bike, finding the building, etc. When the restaurant makes me wait, I get paid less and I get very angry (inside).

I wonder if, from a legal stand point, once you accept a job, can you then be an employee whilst you carry that delivery? Governments need to regulate this industry as essentially its a promise of flexible work hours disguising a desire to exploit a vulnerable workforce.

What type of vehicle did you do it in?..I do mines on bike and on a daily basis,I don't pay anything except for the occasional pit stop to grab a bite or something to drink..and from time to time I spend on bike parts but that's not very often.

I'd use electric bike or gas bike, less tired, get to deliveries faster!!
@MattSezer
@MattSezer 6 лет назад
A gas bike you'd need license plates and get parking tickets and electric bike you could get a ticket for just riding it, as they're technically not legal in NYC.
@leonf1111
@leonf1111 6 лет назад
Matt Sezer well people are using them in NYC, so how are those people not getting tickets?
@MattSezer
@MattSezer 6 лет назад
They are getting tickets and having their bikes confiscated. However, there are a lot of delivery people on E-bikes and the crackdowns are only in certain areas at certain times; some people also say it's racially motivated. They've somewhat turned a blind eye to E-bike use in general, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to risk having my $2K+ E-bike confiscated if it was my only way of making a living. I've personally seen it happen several times, so it does happen.
@leonf1111
@leonf1111 6 лет назад
Matt Sezer that's messed up, they should be completely legal, especially with traffic in NYC!!! I drove there one time, can't be a nice driver there, had to be aggressive to get anywhere.
@carnivoregains1413

leonf1111 Yup, though, even better than an E-bike is a scooter (like a Vespa). I do deliveries in South Beach, it’s great down here. I’m sure it’s hell in NYC.

What is this best time period during the day for deliveries? I want to work this summer break from college preferably 8 hours 5 days a week and be able to still go to the gym and lift weights 3 days a week too, think that would be pushing it too hard?

Get a motorcycle, or at least a scooter. Learn how to ride it, practice mastering it in wide open parking lots. And always ride like you are literally invisible. Still signal and safely lane split/filter, to avoid getting rear-ended & crushed. But always act like vehicles & pedestrians will run into you.
@amendez7
@amendez7 5 лет назад
Dumb question: Why riding a bike instead of a motorcycle? Is faster and the gas price/number of deliveries relation is worth the cost.

@Dave....
@Dave.... 8 лет назад
Anywhere from like 24,000 to 40,000 per week. 24,000 being the low rate ($500 per week) most guys make and it's not taxed since its independent contract work. Some make $800, 1,000 even 2,000 a week. Depends all on tips, hours and how fast of a biker you are.
@nepalihercules
@nepalihercules 8 лет назад
i do this full time, 4pm to 12 pm, 7 days a week and pull in over 1500 a week, all the tips are tax free so you actually get to keep most of your money. if you love riding bike, it can be the best job.
