Sharpening & Setting up Handplanes- No Jigs! This video brought to you by SimpliSafe! simplisafe.com/anneofalltrades
If you're not getting the results you want from your handplanes, it's likely due to a sharpening or setup problem. Even inexpensive planes can be made to function significantly better with a simple understanding of how to sharpen and set up handplanes. You don't have to buy an expensive sharpening system to get a nice edge either, whether you're using waterstones, oil stones, or diamond plates, the basics of a sharp blade are a flat back and raising a burr across the entire leading edge of the blade. Plane irons are actually one of the easiest things to learn to sharpen freehand, it just takes a little practice. Locking your wrists, tucking your elbows, and centering yourself over the work is the first step. Sharpening bench planes has carried a lot of mystery for far too long, let's get grandpa's Stanley hand planes making perfect curly shavings again by learning to freehand sharpen! After you get your plane sharp, you need to learn to set it up, and handplane setup and tuning tips are coming up in the next video. Stay tuned!

Freshmen year of high school I had wood shop and we had to learn how to use a plane. Sharpening our irons was done on this ancient grinder that had a guide for getting the perfect angle, but since it was so old and the safety window was nearly impossible to see through we had to go by feel. I hated that thing!! Especially after I found out that the guide actually had a dip worn into the center and it wasn't sharpening square, but hitting slightly more on the outer edges of the iron. I pointed this out to our teacher who basically said I was crazy and there wasn't anything wrong with it, but by the end of the semester they took it apart to have the guide block reground to take that dip out. Although he said it was for some other reason.

Hi Anne, I didn’t know there were pig police how could come out and stop a pig from eating your screen door. I have been collecting and logging all sorts of tools since I was a young boy wanting to getting woodwork, I have branched out into metal work as well but I am now seventy and wanted to give my son the pick of the tools that he will need when I am cremated and no longer care. He asked me if I had a list of tools he could go through so I gave him a copy of my tools on a USB stick. When he looked at the list he was amazed to see that my tools that I had collected over the years had a value of sixty odd thousand pounds (did I mention that I had been collecting tools for about fifty years) and I have at least one of every tool I have ever seen or heard about and they are all stored away in four sheds in my back garden. To cut a long story short (something I don’t do often) he was watching one of your videos and now I have a security system by simplisafe. All I have to do now is remember that basted security code?

I know what it's for, but in my experience teaching sharpening classes, it's not really a move most of my beginner students could master without some practice, it's all about eliminating those variables at first ;)

I actually find it's easier to freehand it, just got to get your body mechanics correct so that you're not controlling the angles with small joints which are floppy and make big movements quickly.

Don't forget you can skew it if it's not biting. You can also scrub with anything from a block plane all the way up, it doesn't have to be a dedicated scrub, but would benefit from a blown out throat and cambered blade. But you only really need all of that if you're taking stuff down from rough logs with only haha tools, it's kinda why not many 40's were made anyway.

@AnneofAllTrades
@AnneofAllTrades 3 года назад
That's a great bit of feedback, I'll be sure to get that kind of B-roll next time. The marker is really just meant to black out the whole tip so when you rub the blade on the stone, the marker gets removed, showing where the high spots are, and where you are removing material.

There's a lot of difference between "That's sharp" and "Hey, I see blood! Cut myself and didn't know it! ".

I'm 35 and never married...and I will probably be single for the rest of my life because the only girls I've managed to get a date with (a few dozen over the years) have thought my passion for woodworking and antique tool collection, restoration, and use is something I need to "grow out of" before I could get serious about a relationship...on the subject of this video, I've got 12 antique planes, and the list of other woodworking tools is fairly lengthy...where are all of the cute tool girls at?
