I just got some new hand planes so I figured it was a good time to make a video on my sharpening process!
All the chisels and planes I used in this video are from Woodcraft, they have been great for me and I can't wait to put the new ones to good use! You can find them here -
3-IN-ONE Multi-Purpose Oil is a versatile formula that cleans off grime, lubricates moving parts, penetrates rust, and protects tools and equipment. The Marksman Spout comes in handy when precise control is required. Its on-and-off twist tip will help you avoid unwanted spilling, and leaking; and its clear product fill indicator will tell you when you're running low. Now, you can clean, lubricate, and protect your tools and equipment easier and better than ever.

The knife sharpener arrived quickly and in good condition ru-vid.comUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I was happy to see that that packaging was easy to open. I did not need a chain saw to get into the package.The sharpener was smaller than I expected but that might turn out to be and advantage because it will be much easier to store than my old sharpener. The instructions on the package were simple and concise; perfectly adequate for this product. I liked that the two slots were labeled with "Course" and "Fine" on both sides of the sharpener. Now, how does it work? It's fantastic. A few swipes of the knife through the two slots and the knife was sharper than when it was new. The rubber surface on the bottom held it in place while sharpening. I thought the small size might be a problem but it was not a problem at all. In fact, I prefer it to the larger sharpeners I have used in the past. On top of that, the small size makes it very easy to store.I love it and highly recommend it.

Thanks Tamar. Like you I never enjoyed or had much luck honing blades. This video made the whole sharping process come together. The diamond stones are a game changer for me and you see results quickly and see what the micro bevel is doing. Other videos didn’t really show me the elusive micro bevel, I didn’t really grasp the importance of it. I’m now getting very good results, thanks to your video.

I totally loved this video and made a very similar setup as you with the 3 stones!! I did make one improvement though. I made the middle stone slightly higher so that you could run sideways on it without hitting one of the other stones - to get rid of a burr making long strokes down the length. I noticed you wanted to do that on yours, and you had to do it at the end. Thanks for helping me with my setup!

I enjoyed your video. I have found that by placing 3 stones side by side it makes sharpening chisels and short plane irons on the center stone a bit cumbersome. I found that by only putting two stones on two separate bases or by placing them on 3 edges of the same board (so that there is no center stone) it is easier to work off the edge of the jig. In order to keep the base from moving around I installed 4 non skid feet in place of the bench hook. It works for me.

Excellent video. Your information is a terrific summary of so much information that is scattered across the internet. I also like that you put your own improvements on the Sellers sharpening board. I made one but will be going back to include your ideas. Finally, getting called away from the shop to make dinner is a woodworking challenge that deserves it's own video.

Chad Wicks Please! Not bicycle chains! There are much, much better lubricants for bike chains than oil; especially in this day and age. Use something that has silicone at least or more ideally a chain wax (it’s dry and doesn’t leave black marks and as the initial, extra wax falls off, it carries dirt and grime with it; it’s the cleanest and longest lasting option that works extremely well.) Modern lubricants for bicycle chains are much better options.

Thumbs up on an informative and comprehensive video. I appreciate your detail in explaining reasons for your choices in methods and materials, such as the use of automotive rather than household window cleaner. Knowing why helps us choose alternative methods when we don't have the stuff you show. Watching your expressive hands fly around the razor edges you created added some dramatic tension to your presentation. My mind went back to The Woodwright's Shop, where Roy Underhill's demonstrations often involved blood. Great video.
@jamesthe-doctor8981
@jamesthe-doctor8981 3 года назад
Roy Underhill has been a hero of mine for many decades! I can't believe how lucky the country is that he's still doing The Woodwright Shop after all these years! I stopped watching it a while back because I thought he had retired, but nope! His rusty hair and mustache are mostly gray now, but he's still plugging away. One of his best episodes for me was the one where he sharpened a chisel on the huge, pedal-powered grinding wheel. The "burr" he got on it looked more like a tiny sheet of tinfoil.

What you show is sound advice and will bring great results. Depending on the blade, don't spend too much time on the strop. The more passes you make, the higher the chances that you'll round your edge over slightly. If you're looking for additional information to tweak sharpness to what you're looking for in a particular blade, search for the ones that prepare cuts for microscope pictures. There is no deep dive needed but there are pointers on what to avoid in the overall process. Maybe you can do a similar video to sharpen round or v-shaped carving tools.

This is an excellent video. I appreciate you giving Paul Sellers credit. His advice seems to be the foundation of your approach. You were kind enough to give credit where credit was due. I like your discussion of blade angles. This topic confuses me. Your explanation helped to clear up some of that confusion. I liked how you created stops for various angles right on the diamond stone holder. The way you cut the recesses for the stones astounded me. I have been thinking about making a stone holder for a long time. I have designed in my mind all sorts of jigs to use with the router to cut those recesses. Then you build a plexiglass base plate for your router and cut the recesses out by hand. So much for my overthinking.

@@3x3CustomTamar Reputed to offer excellent service and support, L-N would send you another set if you asked, I'd think. But you can do a separate set of chisel stops with that dandy electronic protractor. Your shavings demonstrate an excellent edge. Using my Eclipse honing guide, upon which the L-N is based, I tested your set-up. Using the plane projection, my chisel bevel would have been about 27 degrees, give or take. Not having the blade flat on the board when setting the projection also makes the angle more acute. I'm not a skilled enough woodworker to know how important this all boils down to. Like you said during your introduction, it's easy to be confused by the choices among sharpening systems. I favor yours, though after using the guide to initialize, I've gone to maintaining it freehand, using a bevel gauge to check my work from time to time.

14:19 I can recommend Renaissance Wax and Boeshield T9. Neither is cheap, but tools are not cheap. I use both of these on my planes, and so far so good in the UK where atmospheric humidity tends to outdo that in the USA. I hope you are enjoying your planes!

Your timing for this video couldn't have been better! I just learned new items like chisels & planes don't COME SHARP. I hadn't planned to get into all that yet since in learning the basics but I just had an experience where I needed to chisel & it was a nightmare. So thank you for your timely & informative video.

Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial. I’ve got some very old chisels and planes I’d like to restore and make usable again. Looks like I need to invest in some of these stones. I like the way you routed out a tight space to hold the stones in place.

Ok, yes indeed...a "101" Master Class for DIY enthusiasts. Really, madam, always waiting for a new video to enjoy your work. I certainly agree when you mentioned what works for anyone during the process to reach the final goal of a well done and the great satisfaction at the end of the road, that implies, to go for more challenges. As usual, my wife and I send greetings and our respects from PR. God bless you, your family, and those like me in the always learning curve.

gahh Tamar is the best. I love Paul Sellers' videos and have learned so much from him (in addition to dozens of other folks' vids out there about sharpening), but in this one video I learned several things I don't think I've heard mentioned before - such as only flattening the back on chisels initially and not every time (gonna save me so much time!), that the purpose of the secondary bevel is for quick sharpening, and adjusting the frog to reduce tear out! Wonderful video. Thanks, Tamar!
