Fun fact: The first goaltender to be recorded wearing a mask in a hockey game- although it was a fencing mask- was Elizabeth Graham of Queen’s University in 1927. She donned the fencing mask in her school’s hockey game to protect her face as she had recently had dental work done and didn’t want the risk of ruining it with a puck to the face, but also didn’t want to miss the game. Was she the origin point? Pretty likely that she’s not, but it’s still a cool fact to learn.
I love how far BarDown has progressed, but these videos are CLASSICS! Also, this was the origin video where Corwin started talking about Gretzky’s inability to “raise the puck.” And this video is also the origin of Luka’s rivalry with CUJO!
Fun fact. Clint Benedict of the Montreal Maroons was actually the first person to wear a goalie mask. He only did it once cause it obstructed his view so much but Jacque Plante did it consistently
Luca: “...It’s what the Romans used, one slash to heart heart and you’re done.” Me: In the Colosseum the Romans actually cut the jugular, the entire front neck, open when Gladiators killed each other.
Jacques Plante got a Puck to the nose and being the only goalie for the canadiens at the time he had to play but refused to if he couldn't wear a mask he wore in practice, after an 18 game win streak the mask stayed.
We want more Kishan!!!! I'm not sure if he's still at TSN, but he's great. He's like the opposite of Jesse because he knows a lot but talks a little, lol
Most hilarious thing was David Ayres wearing a Toronto theme mask while playing for the Canes AGAINST Toronto 😂 I know he was only emergency but still hilarious the Leafs couldn't beat their own Zamboni driver 😂😂
You know what's kinda funny when you rewatch the bardown videos and you see funny things like Luca saying that Cujo's mask is a polar bear instead of a St Bernard named Cujo? Is now the Leafs have an affiliate in the ECHL called the Newfoundland Growlers and their mascot/logo is a St.Bernard like Cujo! Lmao How Ironic
Martin Brodeur backups: Roger Clement, Kevin Weeks, Johan Hedburg (Played 10 games when Marty was injured) Corey Shneider (Current starter) and Keith Kinkaid (current backup, was brought in from AHL when Marty got injured again to backup Shneider, finished a game against the Lightning) Never Heard of Scott Wedgewood tbh
When it came to Eddie "The Eagle" Belfour and his mask everyone was quick to say almost every team he has played for. The Team you missed that he also played for were the San Jose Sharks in 96-97 season. 13 games to be exact!
I surprised myself with knowing more than I thought! ... When he asked about Devils backups I knew a few obviously and then on 24 it got to my head thinking that it was Scott Clemmensen because I had said Wedgewood probably wouldn’t have such a cool mask made in time for the NHL cause he started like 3 games for the Devils before being basically a career AHLer
Surprised they didn't know Richter, his mask was the best of that generation, so clean and solid that you could see it on the crappy TV's of the time, while everyone else was going for complicated designs that ended up looking like mud. They even made a third jersey out of it.
3:08 Brodeur succeeded Chris Terreri as the Devils' starter, and I also remember Corey Schwab, Kevin Weekes, Scott Clemmensen, and current Sharks assistant/goaltending coach Johan "Moose" Hedberg all backing up Brodeur at some point. And wouldn't you know it with Hedberg...
I immediately guessed the Wedgewood one but he's a goalie with the Yotes this year so that probably makes it a lot easier. He is still playing with a Devils mask. It's a different mask but the style is the same.
"He did the reverse Jacques Plante...This game feels a little too safe" what makes that funny is that hasek was a goalie who just didn't care and would always full send it
you guys should do a quiz where everyone has to answer history for the other guys favorite team. So Jesse answers leafs/Avs. Luca does Jets/leafs. and so on
Fun fact for the Bardown team. I still have 3 of those goalie masks from McDonald's, including the Potvin one. Also have some of those holographic cards sitting around. My uncle use to be the CEO of McDonald's Canada so I got some great stuff growing up
The first goalie on the list who played with Leafs ties was the first goalie on the list actually. Jacques Plante slummed it in Toronto for a few years later in his career.
Someone should point out Clint Benedict was the first goalie to ever wear a mask in the NHL (1930) for the Montreal Maroons. Plante popularized it and was the first to wear it full time.
AWESOME, as a Goalie and Goalie card collector, I knew 25/25 but Scott Wedgewood was the only one that confused me, I knew him, but couldn't come up with his name.
Luca and Corwin really showed how young they are in this one. Didn't know who Alpha and Puddies are? and barely recognized Richter and Potvin? This was a cool one though.
Should have put Gilles Graton as the last mask and also added in Brian Hayward plus Ken Dryden. Honestly there are so many good masks that if you added them all in this would be a much longer video 😂😂
Plant was the first NHL goalie mask. First ever goalie to wear a mask was a Japanese(!) goalie at 1936 Olympics. He needed it cause he wore glasses and IIRC it was an adapted Kendo helmet
Wedgewood is my personal favorite goalie because I was playing with my friends in chel 18 and they were so bad I said I would beat them with the coyotes. I put wedge wood who was like a 72 and he got like 3 shutouts 😂
Yann Danis, Kevin Weeks, Johan Hedberg, Scott Clemenson, John Vanbiesbrouck and Cory Schneider split time with him in 2014. Don’t forget the first player that backed him up after he lost his starting role, Chris Terreri. I’m a Devils fan.
