Can You Over Apply Liquid Iron? An Experiment On My Buffalograss

I wanted to see if my Buffalograss parkway strip could handle an overapplication of liquid iron just to see how tough it was. I've applied liquid chelated iron to my lawn before but never to Buffalograss, which is well known to be a naturally lighter shade of green.
For this experiment, I used a product called Iron Boost which is labeled as a 15-0-0 product that also contained 6% liquid iron.
I applied it to the lawn as if I was fertilizing with Nitrogen rather than supplementing with Iron.
This resulted in a fairly normal application of Nitrogen, approximately 0.38 lbs per 1k sqft, but it also ended up overapplying the Fe application by about 5-times.

Great question and one I am always happy to answer. I live in the West and have been around drought and watering restrictions for years. Buffalograss has the lowest water needs of them all, it's native to the USA, it can grow in both cold and warm season territories, it requires very low fertilization, it self-repairs although requires edging, and it stands up to standard herbicides. It can be mowed short, medium, or left as a no-mow lawn space since it never really gets taller than 6-7 inches. It's a lawn option that can be maintained meticulously or nearly neglected so I think it's a lawn option that should be considered by an enormous amount of people through this country. The only main requirement is it needs full sun. You can see my original video explaining some of this here if you like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JVsOIoPKGqY.html&t - BTW, I appreciate your support for all this time. I'm sure there's a lot of people that don't comment often or ever; you guys are the foundation of this channel. :)

Buffalo is shade tolerant up to 60%. It needs less water and maintains it's colour better under trees.

Not really good visible, maybe its the camera, looks almost more yellow to me. Maybe best to see in shade?

I agree completely, didn't realize it until well after I filmed the after, I think the sun coming through on that low angle just did a number on the camera. My apologies for my lack of camera skills. I'm planning on taking a few extra shots of the area this afternoon and putting up a community post of before/after pictures for those of you guys that want to see better visuals.

Somewhat related, can chelated iron be sprayed immediately after mowing or is there a wait period? I see mowing after an application you should wait at least 24 hours but can’t find anything on post mowing. Thanks, love the channel.

Unfortunately I don't have an authoritative answer for you, I've never researched that but my gut tells me it doesn't matter if you mow and then apply right afterwards. Most important thing is to apply to dry leaf material and then let it sit there untouched for a while.

Quick question when adding iron in liquid do you have to water after applying even like simple lawn iron or no which would u say is the best iron or fastest working liquid iron? Thank u

Do you think if you used iron on new grass seed, or grass that was recently plugged / sprigged, do you think it would help with growth?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 4 месяца назад
I don't think so, the liquid iron is basically a cosmetic treatment for most lawns and a medicine for chlorosis for lawns with problems. Most lawns won't have chlorosis due to iron deficiencies and thats why most people who use liquid iron are literally just attempting to deepen the color of green for the visual effect. It wears off over time and needs to be reapplied if you want to keep the deeper green. It doesn't push new growth either so I doubt it will make any meaningful effect on the growth trajectory of new grass. I've got a long history of trying to walk the line on liquid iron; it's a flashy product that can make lawns look really awesome when used regularly without pushing extra growth, but like botox or mascara it's not necessary; it's just a step up from lawn paint. I usually only use liquid iron when I make a video on the topic to make a point or show an example/experiment.

Any suggestions if you slipped and edged a little to deep into lawn? Tossed some fertilizer n seed down

you probably did all you need to do and even then you probably could just leave it be unless it was super extreme. groves like an edger leaves tend to fill themselves back in over time with general weathering and lawn biology. It's like when you aerate the lawn and leave holes all over the place. Eventually they fill themselves back in on their own without any intervention at all.

Couldn’t see any difference from the iron. Perhaps more time is needed. How are those sprigs holding up?

Will liquid iron blend POA in a cold season grass? I’m trying to pull most of it, but as a Canadian we have nothing to fix it, so I was hoping to blend it in so it doesn’t stand out.
@johnjrkean7008
@johnjrkean7008 4 месяца назад
The poa will always be lighter trust me I've been dealing with it for years but it does help to spot it easier to pull it out as ur grass gets darker
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 4 месяца назад
as the others said, it will change it's look but it still won't match, also the seed heads will always be there and those are responsible for the silvery tops that stick out like a sore thumb.

Instructions unclear. My house burnt down, and my yard is covered by a thick steel armor. Please repeat what kind of molten iron were you using?

Don't you have to water it in after applying Iron... or liquid Nitrogen ?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 4 месяца назад
Liquid iron products don't get watered in, they have to sit on the leaf and absorb into the tissues. Urea should be watered in though although this can happen hours later or even the next day. The longer the urea goes without water then more is lost to volatilization but waiting half a day or so as I did with this application shouldn't affect the application very much.

You don't water that iron in?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 4 месяца назад
liquid iron doesn't get watered in, it absorbs into the leaf directly, that's why it works so fast. For the urea it needs to be watered in but that can easily be done 6-12 hours later. You do lose some to volatilization of urea (gassing off) but if you water it in over night after applying the iron then most isn't lost. If you were to apply granular iron like Ironite or a granule fertilizer with included Fe then that has to be watered in deeply. The granular form sits on the soil and very quickly oxidizes if not incorporated into the soil. Thats why granule iron products work so differently than liquids.

probably my poor filming skills, I'm going to try and take some extra footage this afternoon from better angles and put up a community post of side by side pictures for those that want to see it better. I figured getting the time of day the same would come out on camera better than it did but I was wrong. To my naked eye it is obvious but since I'm just a random dude with a camera and not a pro at filming you guys unfortunately don't always get the best visuals.
