So many guitarists played through Fender Bassmans that Fender eventually just gave up on insisting it was a bass amp & listed it as a guitar amp

The Fender Bassman Amp was the design inspiration for the early Marshall amplifiers. On the other hand, a good friend of mine was gifted an Ampeg bass amplifier and while it gave him more power than his cheaper original amplifier, the lack of high end was noticeable. At this point in time -aroung 1968-1968) Ampeg's philosophy (even more so than Fender) was anti distortion and overdrive crunch seemed lacking. (In fairness to Ampeg, they made one of the best sounding guitar amps I ever heard in the mid to late 1980's). I have played keyboard through a bass amp (Hartke) and was very disappointed in how muddy it sounded. (I like clarity and highs in sound). So, as the guys said, modern bass amps have more high frequency room. Some even have high frequency drivers so the trebly bass guitar sound can be heard. Since there have been so many bass amp designs through the years, it depends on the amp. Also, in the famous encounter between Clapton and Hendrix, Hendrix plugged into Jack Bruce's bass amp. Which underscores the point that, except for certain manufacturers (like Amped) bass and guitar amps at that time were closer in design than those later developed.

My first awesome amp head was it actually a Peavey mark IV Bass amp. I absolutely loved it! It was built like a tank and it weighed a ton, so at 400 w I absolutely loved jamming with it because most drummers would actually stop playing and ask me to turn down because they couldn't hear themselves. 😂

That's funny, because I use a mk vi Peavy bass amp as my main tool now. It is like 50 lbs lol. I have played with stuff I had already. And I bought the bass amp from a friend years ago. And was using it as a pa amp for a decade. Then I had an old crate tube amp that died. And said wonder how the 2 together sound. Need to have a pedal board. But the sound was so good. I just put my fender mustang away. I have a boss katana ii for travel. Because the Peavy and broken tube amp weight like 125 lbs together. But at home it's my go to. It's got an eq and sound gates for low and high frequency. So it's easy to dial in the sound you want.

@kongandbasses8732
@kongandbasses8732 5 лет назад
Back in the days amps have been built as "Instrument amplifiers", not as dedicated guitar or bass amp. Remember the Stones on their 1969 USA tour buying the complete first production run of Ampeg SVT (12 of them) for bass, guitar and keyboard? The engineer that designed the amp came with them on tour to service the amps every time after a gig. Back in the days FOH was just for the singers and maybe for drums. Amps have not been as loud as today, speakers didn't have the same SPL as modern speakers today. Often the crowd was louder as the band, because venues became bigger. Because of this the Beatles stopped playing live. So everything was about volume in this days. So a 300 Watt Ampeg SVT just came right for the stadium Tour of the Stones. You see, it is nothing new playing guitar over a Bass amp.

I've been playing electric guitar through bass combos almost as long as I've been playing guitar (about 12 years now). I started on bass guitar, but my church group needed an electric guitarist, and I already had the amp so hey, I was halfway there. I found a deal on an early-model Highway-1 Strat, spent 5 minutes learning CCM's open chords (OK that's an exaggeration, 10 minutes), plugged it into the Peavey 2x10 combo I'd bought for the bass, and that was my guitar sound for a decade, sacred or secular. I *finally* invested in a Bassbreaker 30R as an honest-to-God guitar amp just this year, and thanks to COVID it still hasn't gigged. So yeah, you can go a long way, and have a *lot* of fun, running a guitar through a few pedals into a bass amp. If your tone comes from a pedalboard into the front of a clean vintage Fender, you might not even notice a difference; other than clean boosts (which are just volume knobs when you have this much headroom), bass amps do the pedal platform thing extremely well.

HILARIOUS; the Little Mark III is *exactly* the amp I have that I’m using for guitar. LOVE IT. Lots of headroom. ***FOR ME*** (and my setup), I have it set as: Gain: 9:00 Lo: ~9:00 Mid Lo: 12:00 Mid Hi: ~1:30 Hi: ~1:00 VLE: 0 (“Off”) VPF: 0 (“Off”) Master: As needed; this is my main volume knob. Speaker cab is a homemade 2x12 that I REALLY like playing through. To offer context, I have a Gibson Flying V (2 humbuckers) and a Fender Highway One Strat (that I play through a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster to “match” the Flying V. Because it’s a bass amp and has tons of headroom, I intentionally use it for a clean platform. Any drive/distortion/etc, I get from pedals. I used the FX Loop for a little while for modulation/time-based effects, but given the headroom and the fact that I’m not even trying to push the preamp section, I go straight into the front of the amp. Of note: If you go right into the FX Return (and completely bypass the preamp), the EQ knobs still work. No idea how/why that’s the case; that’d be a question for MarkBass. P.S.: I’m *primarily* a bassist, but dabble with, and have tons of fun with, guitar. I ‘do’ have 2 Mesa/Boogie 50 Cal plus amps that I LOVE, but the MarkBass is light and easy to work with. ;p Cheers, all! : )

During my first year in high school our band had 4 guitar players (one of them later switched to bass, and other one also played ukulele) and only one of them had amp, and school only had bass amp. At first it wasn't a problem because other guitarists played acoustic and classical guitars, but when one of them switched to electric, she played it through bass amp (which had two inputs) and it sounded ok, maybe little to bassy, but better EQ probalby would help. However when she and the bassist played simultaneously guitar couldn't be heard very much. BTW Me (then keyboard player for the band) and the bassist also owned amps at this point, but we weren't bringin' them, we didn't need to bother because it was unnecesary for rehersals, bassist once brought his, but it ended up not getting used. Also one year earlier, when I was about to get an amp I actually wanted bass amp, not guitar amp, because I knew you can played guitar through bass amp, but not bass through guitar amp. I didn't owned a bass and didn't wanted to be a bassist, but I knew it could be helpfull, but I didn't know bassist can just play without an amp. I ended up buying Orange Crush 35W with is a guitar amp, but it has a lot of low end, and you kinda can play bass through it too.

I actually owned only Strat-type guitar when I bought that amp, at first I didn't like it, because previously I plugged the guitar straight into home stereo, which resulted in very clean tones, but then I started to like it. It sounds great when I use middle+bridge pickups, I modded that guitar to be able to use bridge and neck pickups at the same time, and it sounds great too. But I can't hear any difference when I turn mid know, I'm little bit worried If that amp have enough mids to cut thru when playing with full band. Also overdrive was dissapointing, when I played that Strat or some other guitars I sometimes didn't even realised that overdrive is on. Few times I even finished recording guitars for some demos, wondering why amp sounded so bad, then I realised overdrive is on! But then I got Harley Benton DC Custom and pickups of that guitar must had higher output that pickups of my other guitars, because suddenly overdrive actually sound the way I like, and actually this is sound I was looking for. I'm selling this guitar now, but with different pickups, I put stock ones in my other guitars.

I used a Fender FrontMan 15 or 25 bass combo for a while for all of these (got lots of pedals, studio effects, Eurorack stuff, so I can "sculpt" my sound... once I get all my gear set back up again!), but gave it to my son with his first guitar (bitchin' Ibanez RG, I'm actually jealous, it's nicer than mine, except for my Duncan JB and Jazz pickups!).

With that being said, no fight about the bass amp in our Band! ;) If you wanna check us out, look for „Zweierpasch“ here on RU-vid. Especially the live videos. :)

Think DICK DALE!! Bass amps makes your sound or tone not in terms of being more loud, but by being more sonic with the right preferable choice amount of midrange, bass and treble especially with a wide graphic eq to shape your sound and also your speaker cab configuration is crucial also..

I guess the best way to use a bass amp for guitar would be to run your board with a EQ or PREAMP and go in the amp through the "FX RETURN" to bypass the preamp section and only use the power amp section. As a bass player I don't mind playing through the PA , it happened .. but I m always wondering if high gain high pitch distortion will damage the bass cab or will it take it .

for years i just plugged my distortion pedal into my harley benton 20w bass combo. at multiple times i thought i needed a practice guitar amp. i tried a fender mustang combo, a marshall practice amp and a small orange cube. it all sounded worse, especially at high gain. only the fender could make a point when using bluesy tones. i have to admit none of them were tube driven, but i guess i just liked the roll of in the high frquencies combined with a nice distortion pedal (digitech hardwire) better than the fizzly shit that came out of the others... 😂 ALSO: i find it so funny, that most guitar players seem to insist so hard on having a real amp at all situations and beeing miced up, even if it really makes everything very complicated. sometimes i think a cure could be to make them play through a naked DI sound to their headphones to play more to their liking without twisting knobs and buying tons of gear! just my 2cts ;-)

It's not unusual for basses to produce bell like mids and highs if a bassist so chooses. You'll be just fine chugging away through the same rigs or even down to modest combos. Been there done that like all the other bass/guitar players commenting.

Just thinking it may not work for a begineer amp. I have a small Crat that works fine just wanted a better and badder. LOL The price was right too. Just don't want to throw money away. What about an amp-in-a-box into the front of a bass amp? I do something a bit more complicated because I hate the fact that tube amps designed after 1968 (aside from maybe a couple of dumbles) have NOT been voiced right for es335s or hollowbody archtops.

If money is no object then Ampeg will be the most powerful. Otherwise, Acoustic offers an affordable amp head with your choice of a 1x15 or 2x10 cab. Great quality. And on down the line if you choose to upgrade or purchase an amp or something else to put in front of it, it does an excellent job of enhancing what’s placed in front of it as well. I used mine and my phone to play the music when I got married, haha.
