The riff is almost like something you would expect from The Meters, but Sly accents it with so much of his band's great style. This goes to show that a lot goes into such a simple riff.

Man, this is one of the all time funky riffs! I've loved this song for so many years but never tried actually playing it on guitar. I figured out a bit of it by ear but was having trouble finding the lowest notes because they go by so fast. Your video was perfect! I'm actually playing the whole thing near the 5th and 7th frets (sticking to the low three strings for the main riff). I find it easier to do the muting this way and it's closer to E9 chord too. Thank you so much for such a clear breakdown, you rock!

Did you ever check out Paul Kossof (band called Free)? After 40 years still a major name in the USA, in Europe nobody even knows the band. "All right now" and "Mr. Big" have some pretty easy but very catchy guitar parts. (And maybe for once grab a Les Paul ^^) Or you could make an 1 hour episode on all Black Sabbath riffs because there is soo many killer ones.

Thom. I envy your guitar skills. Always wanted to study guitar but I got sidetracked. Plus my parents were very supportive. Now I’m just an old man at 63. I fractured my spine last year and I can hardly sit down from More than 15 minutes playing the guitar

Your talent knows no bounds, sir. Your music knowledge and proficiency on guitar are impressive. You've done tutorials on John Mayer before so I hate to be redundant....but I would recommend generating a "Do You Know this Riff" segment for two tracks on the J-M Trio album/CD "Try". They are "Who Did You Think I Was?" and the Ray Charles cover "I've Got a Woman". Mayer demonstrates both technique as well as tasty guitar tone....at the time think he was using a Gibson 345 or hollow body. A couple other riffs by other artists that have always intrigued me include Robin Trower in Procol Harum, on the track "Whiskey Train", and the intro and verse to Paul Simon's "Learn How to Fly". Not that tough maybe, but tricky, and maybe an unusual time signature or off-beat guitar entry. In any event, Thomas, carry on. Your videos educate, illustrate, entertain, and cover so many musical genres. Kudos, and be well.

Such a cool and groovy riff. I wonder if the Hendrix chord will fit into this riff well. Only way to find out is to play it and see if it fits I guess.

Led Zeppelin 1 and almost all of 2 were recorded using a Telecaster. Page is a single-coil lover. As he had his Les Pauls modded 1&2 both have coil taps for that single-coil sound.

Is the riff originally from this song? Because I know Jimi Hendrix played it on “We gotta live together” off the band of Gypsys album. It would be awesome if you looked at Jimi Hendrix’s “Who Knows” off the same album.
