I do my own nail and I have been doing this technique for years. She’s speaking the truth BUT I don’t think its being emphasized just how dry the nail polish has to be. Not just touch dry but rock solid. I wait 1-2 hours before putting gel topcoat on. I have been misled so many times if i try to rush it. I can’t imagine this being a practical technique for a nail salon.

I've been doing this for a while. I always let my regular polish dry for a day before I put on the gel top coat, just to make sure all of the chemicals in the polish evaporated

I just started doing this because sally hansen’s “the queen’s velvet” is one of my favorite polishes (glitter fuchsia 😩) one tip for doing this at home is to use a quick dry top coat so you can go about your business while the polish fully dries. then you can gel top coat it later for the longer wear (I usually just wait until the next day because I’m paranoid about wrinkling lol)

I used to skip top and base coat in high school because I didn't really care about the manicure longevity plus all the Sally Hansen I bought on sale was probably the xtreme wear line which lived to it's namesake. But now that I'm older and in a job where particle contamination is an issue, I use both to keep my indie nail polish on my nails

to elaborate more, like suzie mentioned in the video gel base coat is sticky. nail polish base is not in my experience. The polish would not go onto a sticky base nicely.

@@Isissa125 just cleanse the gel base before applying the nail polish. However I have never gel top coated over nail polish. I use a nail polish top coat that can go in a light. Years ago we used 60 watt light globes 🤔 I don’t like this gel top coat method as nail polish can take up to 8 hours to fully dry. Luckily I only have one client who uses nail polish now and that’s only when she wants one particular colour 👍🏼

@@rachnailedit Depends on your brand. Some gel bases sold as part of builder or gel colour polish are designed to be sticky on purpose and wiping them off wouldn't provide a smooth surface to paint on regardless.

The only way I was able to get this to work is by also using a nail polish top coat first, otherwise the polish is tender for hours. I had it wrinkle when I put the gel top coat on the next day. It seemed perfectly fine at first until I had a hot shower and it wrinkled. Maybe it was the polish I was using years ago, but nail polish without the polish topper takes a crazy amount of time to dry. As long as I had that polish topper, wrinkling was impossible. :) I would still give it a few hours first, but you can still use your hands after about 15-20 minutes.

I don’t use gel anymore but when i did i would do my nails as normal with regular top coat and everything and then the next day put on the gel tc so i can be sure everything is dry and cured first

I absolutley love Holo Taco. When I had a set of nails I used gel. I have only natural nails for the past 20 years do to my job and I only use regular polish now. Holo Taco is definilty fast dryng. That is one of the main reason I love it so much.

Back when I could afford to have regular manicure appointments, I would have a complete process of hard gel (IBD) in clear so that I could use whatever nail polish I wanted on top. The hard gel had no sticky layer, and often the regular nail polish would last until my next infill (like, a month or more)! I never thought to put a gel topper over the regular polish: The regular polish topcoat would always suffice. My Technician was a dream to work with because she understood that I only needed a thin layer of gel for strength. She never pushed acrylic or tips or a French manicure on me. She was happy to do “less” on me because I was a regular customer. That was 15 years ago 😢 I’m almost certain that lovely lady has retired. Now most nail salons I look into only have pink, not clear gels available - and rarely can I find a Technician who’s educated enough to know the difference between “hard” and “soft” gel. **SIGH**

$50 or more for gel manicure - regular acrylic $35, where I live. Ten dollars more on each for French Nail. Prices are through the roof. $100 on a manicure monthly is something I'm not doing.

Been doing the "Gelly Sandwich" technique for a few years now and personally I love it! Have always had trouble getting long wear for my polish with just regular top coat. And since I do nail art all the time I really want that time put in to last me! I do have to use a gel base coat tho, no matter how much prep I do to the base nail to strip the top layer of oils for polish, gel has a *much* better grip on my natural nail to stop my polish from popping off in a sheet like it often does with a regular base coat! I usually do a regular quick dry top coat on my polish and hold off on the gel top coat for a few hours, or more likely the next morning, to just be 100% sure every layer of the polish under it is dry

I use the same technique when doing nail stamping. Stamping polish dries extremely quickly, so you have the ability to do gel enhancements, or apply a gel color, stamp with regular polish, and then top with a gel top coat to preserve the design you've created. The key, as you stated, is to allow the stamping layer (regular polish) the time to dry. Thanks for sharing your expertise, tips and tricks. 💅💖💖💖

Back then when gel polish started to become popular like 14 years ago my nail tech would do the regular polish and started putting a gel top coat for an extra 5 bucks and my polish stayed on for a long time . She stopped doing nails so I had to go somewhere else and no one else couldn’t do it so they would charge me for gel polish which is way more than a regular manicure .

Im very glad to see you back. Second time i went to a nail salon, i've been overcharged and my all nails broke the next day. I often apply regular nail polish overtop of a non-stick topcoat. It lasts about as long as on natural nails, so you can do it this way too but it wont give you 4 weeks of wear. But that was actually the point for me. Sometimes i want the strength of gel but the quick change of regular nail polish so I can easily change the color like every week.

Hi Susie is it SAFE to cut your Cuticles? I read from WebMD that your cuticles are there to PROTECT against infection and theres NO reason to cut them. When I get mani's at the nail salon they cut my cuticle. Should I tell them to stop?

I do builder gel and gel top coat, and THEN regular lacquer and regular top coat. I can change my polish whenever I want with non acetone remover which doesn't damage the gel. The lacquer lasts quite well on top of gel, which is not the case for my natural nails. Doing it this way, makes it easy to switch polishes without having to file off a gel top coat. Your method takes way too long.

this is a great idea - i wouldn't say her method takes way too long though - because most regular top coats don't last and if you want your nails for 3-4 weeks you'll want a gel top coat

I’m surprised not even a regular polish base coat (fully dried) was used here. I thought for sure you still needed a base even if not a gel base. I’m also rocking Electric Sweetener which is what appears to be the purple shade you’re wearing. I have the whole HT collection, and I pop peelies every 2-3 days because I’ve got super bendy nails. I’d like to try this technique to see if it makes any difference for me.

i use holo taco and mooncat polishes overtop of builder gel or polygel overlays :) sometimes i will use gel overtop as well but most of the time i just use reg polish bc i swap my nail color so often and it's easier to remove the color w acetone

If you mix a small amount of regular nail colour and gel top coat together it takes the work away. Cure the same. Only mix a small amount of each at a time. One or two nails worth. Works great. Wipe off brush and clean it when you’re done.

The winkles propably come from the gel shrinking a bit, that's what causes the nail burn in the UV light too.

Suzie help! I’m super allergic to gel/acrlyic. Are there long lasting options for nail polish? I wrap the tip, I use gloves to do dishes, I avoid doing the rough and tumble activities I love. I’ve tried base coats, toppers, and using them together. Even with these precaution, my mani never ever lasts more than 24 hours :( And advice??

Well really makes it tough when you’re allergic to both acrylic and gel It would be best to find out what ingredient in those two products that you were allergic to and then maybe you can find some products that doesn’t have that ingredient if you’re lucky enough for it to be a popular ingredient such as HEMA

Never had this happen Remember bacteria has to has be introduced. Also there’s no water ( which carries the bacteria) so I believe there is virtually no chance for this to occur

Hi Suzie! I've been watching a lot of your videos lately because I'm looking into doing my own nails at home. I was wondering if filing down (for example) polygel using a regular nail file would use the same method as using a nail drill? I've been looking at tutorials and videos of polygel, but many people use nail drills to smooth it out or shape it. Unfortunately, I don't think I will be investing in a nail drill so I'll be using regular nail files for my manicures!

Will this work over a builder gel? I use builder gel on my nails now because as I got older, my nails broke constantly. So now I use the gel to keep my length and prevent peeling or breaking. I kinda hope your answer is no LOL, because I just gave away all my regular polishes 😭

Now I'm curious as to whether there's a way to make standard polish work on top of gel extensions...? Soft gel extensions can have a very smooth surface which is a plus, but would you then still have the issue of the polish "floating" between the extension and the gel top coat? Might have to do some experimenting!

I have never had an issue using regular nail polish on top of my builder gel. But I also usually wait 24 hours before adding the top coat to ensure that the regular nail polish is completely dry

I do the reverse. A gel basecoat, then 2 layers of normal nail polish and no top coat. My issue with nail policy longevity is the nail polish peeling off my natural nail. It seems like gel basecoat sticks to my nail and nail polish sticks to the gel basecoat way better than nail polish sticks to my natural nail

Hi! Or you can mix the nail polish with the gel top coat (50%-50%) and apply coats and "nuke" them properly..😊😊 I used to do that, when I started with gel polishes and couldn't afford buying too many gel colours (I am a DIY😊)

I use gel base and a reinforcement gel, cure and remove the sticky layer and then apply the regular nail polish. And I've been cganging my nail colour without having to file the gel every time. I did this because my nails are too fragile and with regular nail polsh they always end up broken, this way I also gave my nails a break from the gel mani

That’s very different If your using base gel your wearing Gel Nails- you can apply Nail Polish on top of gel nails no problem - we nail techs have been doing it for over 25/30 years -

I do this all the time, but instead I still do the gel base coat as regular polish chips off pretty quickly for me. I paint on the nail polish, wait the next day for it to be fully dry, give it a light buff with a smoothing grit file, clean with alcohol, put another thin base coat, then the top coat. I never have issues with peeling or rippling and it stays on as long as any other gel 😊

While using some colours of gel polish on natural nails even i use high end products sometimes it starts lifting from the free edge area even if i do perfect cutical work, prep of nail it does lift from free edge with some gel polish Can you please solve my problem!

i tried using the rubber basecoat once with my favorite nailpolish color and i wanted to scream at how horrible it was for me to apply anything. ever since, i use regular nail polish with the gel topcoat and i love everything. i use an airdry gel adjacent top coat because i don't do uv lamps (my family has a history of skin cancer), but the wear is amazing.

It’s far easier to do a gel bas and top coat then top that with regular polish and regular quick dry top coat; then you don’t have to wait for the regular polish to be fully dry before topping with gel tc and risking that the polish isn’t dry under the gel and causing things to grow, ick!

It’s probably some kind of reaction between the light and the gel topcoat and the nail polish I’m not a chemist, so I can’t describe it in that manner. But nail polish needs air to dry and if it’s not fully dry, applying gel topcoat over top and then putting it into a light the two just have a bad interaction and it wrinkles. I suspect it’s because the nail polish needs to dry and when it’s cut off, it just can’t dry

As a teenager, I loved wearing pink and red nail polishes and I never used a base coat thus making my nails yellow. I've learned to use a base coat since then.

Yes that base coat for natural It’s Nail Polish So if you’re doing the gel topcoat, you don’t need to use a gel basecoat

Can I do this with peel off base coat+nude nail polish+nail polish top coat+gel polish+gel top polish so I can have the effect of gel polish but I can change whenever I want if it pops off/if I want it off immediately?

Not sure where or when but i remember looking up if this could be done and everywhere online said no and for reasons other than the wrinkling... Why was it advised not to?

Bridge is for Gel Products to stick to natural nails not for nail polish

My big issue is I’ll put on a thin topcoat and I hold it upside down to make sure the topcoat goes to the Apex and then I’ll nuke it. But when I feel my nail, it’s a little wavy like the polish moved during the curing process even though I held it upside down. How do you stop that from happening?

Don’t hold it upside down You don’t wanna build Apex with a Top Coat. This is not meant for bulking / it needs to be this

You seemed to emphasize that is to be on natural nails. How about on top of gel x? (Bare gel x, nail polish ((very dry)) then gel top coat). Thanks!

I actually find I have better results with a gel base, nail polish color coat, and toluene top coat (sometimes I use gel top coat). I dont know what you mean that the polish doesnt stick to gel. Ive never had a problem.
