This is awesome! Your dad was a wise man regarding autox for teenage boys with a high hp stick shift car. Green shirt guy needs to lighten up a little 😂
Yeah I'm sure there are a lot of things I could have fixed. Drifting has definitely pushed me towards jerking it (to steal your phrasing lol), but I do also feel like I'd do better on a full size course where you actually have space to unwind the steering after a turn as opposed to autocross where it's just turn after turn and constant weight transition.
I'm so conflicted on autox. On one side it's the only attainable motorsport I can participate in somewhat locally. On the other, have to deal with these doucebags being elitest and gatekeeping.
It's not all bad. I did it for a number of years because it was all that I could afford, you need REALLY specific setups if youre trying to be competitive though. At this point I've grown out of it even if I had a car meant for grip. But there are gatekeepers in every community, unfortunately.
@@GPaulTheThrashKing I'd only benchmark it against that 47 or whatever I put down, becuase I'm pretty confident I could have landed in that 47 range pretty consistently once I got a feel for the car and course. 2-3 seconds faster on the grip lap is pretty significant when the whole course is under a minute.
I'm not sure I understand what the issue is. Is it an ingroup vs outgroup thing, or are there any safety concerns, or what's the deal? I'm also not sure I understand how one knows sees the course among all those orange cones.
I'd guess it's mainly because of the people picking up cones. There's always some level of risk that a driver could lose control and hit someone. They probably see drifting as more risky than grip driving, though I've seen both go equally bad at the limit. There are marker cones all over the course showing the direction you're supposed to go, but keeping track of that during your lap is an acquired skill for sure. Almost included my course walk in the video where I explained it some, but it felt boring on the edit 😴
Autox is fun as fuck, but I've always had a hard time following course layouts too. I'm much better inside lines than second-guessing which side of a cone I need to be on😂
@@JankyDrift It's literally high school stuff. When I autox'd (last time i autox'd) they were like "Some guy found a needle here. There were drifters here last week. So if you find anything like that, just let us know." Some of them are cool, just car guys out to have a good time. But some of them really never did get past being the nerdy kid in school, and drifters... skaters and punk kids. Natural enmity. It just comes from being the entry level of motorsport. You get some folks who are stupid talented and good people, and some folks who lack the ingenuity, financial success, or determination to graduate to forms of motorsport requiring more commitment (or deeper pockets).
@@GPaulTheThrashKing Honestly autocross to me is a worst return on your time and money investment compared to any other motorsport I've tried. You pay $80 for the privilege of spending 8 hours at an event, 2 hours of which is running for cones, to only wind up with 4-5 minutes of actual driving time. No hard feelings if they don't like drifters or whatever, because you couldn't pay me to do another one of those events lol.
I'm 100% going to make my kids do it when the time comes. Now a days it feels boring but it defintiely kept me from doing stupid stuff on public roads back in the day. You quickly realize the line between "in control" and winding up in a ditch is really thin.
@@JankyDrift Yeah it'll be a while before my kids can drive, but I plan on doing the same, and get them intro to drifting too. I used to love AutoX, but man the time commitment and tiny seat time is hard to justify now. Drifting is way more relaxed chill atmosphere and tons more driving, costs more though.....
@@scottchladek1770 I debated on roasting some of that in the video but decided to keep it chill lol. Basically spent 8 hours there, including 1-2 hours running for cones to get less than 5 minutes of driving time. Thats a pretty crap return on your time and money, which was why I stopped doing it originally. Bless the folks that enjoy it, but the extra money for a drift or track day is 100% worth it to me.
@@JankyDrift it was a great video and glad you showcased it for others to see. What I do really like about AutoX is all the different types of cars you see out there running. I've taken everything from a rental Chrysler Concord, Saturn SC2, mustangs, FC RX-7, WRX, Mini Cooper, BRZ...
