Opening stored food (sugar and wheat) to see their condition!
The sugar didn't keep due to mold, later I discovered the loose top had most likely let in moisture over time. Bonus - we were able to dig out the mold and use the bulk of the sugar to feed our bees, and they are fine :)
The wheat was fine, a little stale tasting. I made bread with it, and it took a long time to rise.
Bonus information: UPDATE: I tried again, and the second yeast from 2002 worked wonderfully! Note that I used half of a packet instead of 1/4 teaspoon, and the bread was made with 100% white flour (the first I tried was 100% whole wheat, which is dense in any case). So yeast that is 20 years old DOES WORK!!! Amazing!
Yeast packets from 2002 do not keep that long! Using them 20 years later, one full packet resulted in a very slight rise in the dough.

The plastic bucket looks to be a food grade bucket which would be why the wheat is still good. However any and all foods that you would want to store for long term should be put in food grade mylar bags first then put in buckets. Also a food grade oxygen absorber packet.

Yes that's the best way. I didn't store these, I inherited them. Glad to have seem that even with less than perfect conditions, the wheat is still good
