Better use thread inserts (or Helicoils - needs special tools) for these. They are available self tapping or with a proper outer thread (e.g. M10 for your M6 bolts)
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 2 года назад
I’d like to give that a go. I actually thought helicoils were very expensive… but that’s just from me remembering specific pedal thread inserts.

@@MonkeyShred I don't think there is enough " meat " around the hole for helicoil .

Worth a try, even if it didn’t work out. I’d be more inclined to drill out a wide, shallow recess on the other end and epoxy in a metal nut. Or braze up the hole and drill it out and retap.
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 2 года назад
That was going to be my second option. Fixing a nut in place on the other side that is!

Helicoil every time for threads, metal epoxy is only really good for filling lost metal or cracks in unstressed places.
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 2 года назад
I’ll give it a go. I was intrigued by the claim on the pack that you could drill and thread the putty.

nice one - thanks :-) I remember the bad old days before owning a torque wrench - just trying to feel for that point before stripping the thread. never nice with expensive components!!

Ah yeah. Many a snapped smaller bolt.
@daddyshrek2295

yeah i really wouldn't trust this on something as critical as a stem

Agree, not worth the risk
@MonkeyShred

After seeing how it reacted and seeing the torque values I’d probably say the same.
@mikey7278

Surely a helicoil is a better option?
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 2 года назад
In some cases I’m sure it is. This one still needed repair to build back up the metalwork though. I’ve never used helicoil either so I can’t comment on how easy it is to use or strong it is

@@MonkeyShred Heli-coils, if properly done should be just as strong as the material its being inserted into especially in aluminum . If you can tap threads and turn a bolt you can install a heli-coil. Good luck man. Love your channel! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KSggAmBQ_H8.html

weld it redrill it rethread it or rethread it bigger size 7 or 8mm
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 2 года назад
Unfortunately I don’t have the capability to weld steel, let alone any alloy material.
@nikitazaycev8636
@nikitazaycev8636 2 года назад
You could just use a thread insert and avoid all the extra hassle. Plus the new thread will actually be more wear resistant, cuz the inserts are made of steel. I did such repair on an old marzocchi 888 fork actually in 3 places (1 bolt on the crown, and 2 bolts holding the axle), 3 months had passed, with repeated hucking to flat from 1.5m and even 2m (onto asphalt), and its still doing well
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 2 года назад
That’s true, but some extra repair is still necessary to build back up the material lost. The hole drilled through the brake lever was completely on the piss too so it might have been difficult there. The bolt someone hammered through literally curved round 🤦‍♂️

Had luck with JB Weld on a stripped water bottle cage boss. But that's a low torque requirement.
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 2 года назад
Also a bit of different ‘load’ scenario.
@wewillmakeit3615
@wewillmakeit3615 2 года назад
The torque you have to tighten the bolt to is not equal to the kind of force the material has to withstand in a regular use situation. So in a stem, this really is a bad idea. Those epoxy "metal" fillers are good for making cracks seal again, or make them airtight/oiltight. For thread repair on a part that is not critical when failing - like the thumbie clamp - it should be ok. I would use JB-Weld though. It is much tougher. Usually threaded inserts are the correct way to repair a stripped thread.
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 2 года назад
Oh yeah I know the stem bolt wouldn’t just be put through the initial torquing. The putty does actually claim in the pack it can be drilled and threaded but yeah, it wasn’t the best results 🥲

I’ve done this very procedure to fix a broken barrel adjuster mount on a frame, but that doesn’t take anything like the torque of a stem.

dont need to repair the thread, if you have open end on the other side may be just use a longer bolt and put a nut on the other side? Also if you really wanna make threads without usign any drilling then use jb weld to fill the hole and put in the bolt. make sure to cover the bolt in either wax or wd40 or transmission fluid so that it doe snot stick to jb weld.

Stem bolts should be tightened to 5/6 nm, so should be fine?
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 2 года назад
I googled a few different torque setting for different stems but 5/6 is in the right range. It might be ok. Maybe.

Yeah always take the guidance on instructions with a pinch of salt eh? 😅 it’s like paint saying it’ll be dry after ‘x’ time but clamps still sinking it and ruining the paint a week later.
