Can You Root for Anyone on Succession?

In this video essay, I explore whether there are any characters on HBO's Succession that are worth rooting for.
Music: Slow Motion from Bensound.com
Music: Sci-fi from Bensound.com
I do not own the films from which I show clips in this video. All clips are used to demonstrate points in the video, which is a review/critique/analysis and does not present the film in its entirety. The clips are edited to short portions of the films and most feature narration on top of them -- they are used to make points about the film. The analysis is for the purpose of commentary and criticism about the films, which makes it Fair Use by both RU-vid and Federal Copyright Law standards.

Yea, good kid, he’s extremely goal oriented, isn’t afraid of thinking outside the box, and he’s got an abundance of tenacity. Shame he ended up leaving Waystar to work in the archives department at Lumen Industries, I saw a post on facebook that said a lot of those jobs are so top secret that they have to drill a hole through your skull so they can inject a medication that temporarily prevents your short term memories from becoming long term memories directly in to your cerebral cortex at the beginning of every shift.

I thought Roman would be a "root for" character when I first started the show. He didn't seem to take himself as seriously as everyone else in the family which gave him an underdog quality. Then the baseball scene happened in the first episode and I've found him to be laughably horrible ever since. I started off hating Tom but over time he's kind of won me over, he just seems like he's always trying to fit in and never quite pulling it off. Shiv...I've never liked, I always thought (and was proven right by season 2) she came off as entitled and hypocritical. Kendall can be a cringey douche sometimes but he is the character who - for me, anyway - earns the most sympathy. That said, all hail Cousin Greg
@DaroriDerEinzige
@DaroriDerEinzige 2 года назад
Greg is, funny though, pretty much the "symbol" for the viewer; at first he's a "good for nothing". Not because he's stupid or so, but because he simple doesn't know what to do with his life. Also, the first thing we pretty much see what he does is lyin'. Not big lies but first he kinda lies about his family and then to his mother to put the blame for his f*ck up towards some other non existent person. He also tends to put up some "Ideals" to cover up the fact that he hasn't the drive or the ambitions to actually fullfill his desires at first. But he never lives up to those ideals, he isn't a "selfmade" guy and never will be. He also don't show any special talent nor the will to put real hard work into something; yet all those ideals and ideas gettin' thrown over board as soon as he expierences the Roy Lifestyle, he suddenly starts to kinda work towards a goal - gettin' on the path *other* Characters lie down to him and startin' to "play the game" to his own advantage. As I said, he isn't dumb. But he ain't special neither. He's also not "good" and while less "traumatized" than the Roy children, he's also not really loyal and all his "values" are simple shallow words he puts up to justify his own laziness, his own insecurity. Remember when he talks about datin' and what not in the third season? Or about the bad cooperations in season one and two? Yeah ... He then starts to work for the benefits of said cooperations and while he's on the Wedding Date with the blonde one, he also starts to date the European Girl just to be "save". Just to "get something" so obviously the words about "substance" were rather a "projection"; he himself lacks substance. Realness. That's the reason why so many people takin' a likin' in him, they see themselves in them because we all kinda like that. To be those "larger than life" Characters, with "untouchable principles" and what not is not only hard, it is near impossible. So, in the end Greg stands for the Viewer - for the average people. For us, which justify their behaviour and "not success" with ideals and values we pretend to have instead of simple admiting that we don't have what it takes to conquer what we need to satisfy our desires.

Why do so many guys think that Shiv is so terrible by comparison to her brothers and husband who frequently do things to harm large groups of people, display apathy towards others, and ignore other people's humanity?
@enotsnavdier6867
@enotsnavdier6867 2 месяца назад
Because her terribleness is much more personal. I do think some of the hate towards her character is sexist in nature, but the fact that most of the terrible stuff she does is towards Tom makes her more of a target. Even though Tom is literally awful, somehow, the actor manages to make him extremely likable. And doing terrible things on a very personal basis, to a character people like is a big black mark. Shiv also doesn't have the really funny personality of Roman or the underdog guilt-ridden "charm" of Kendall. I also hate her because she is the avater of the most bullshit inauthentic liberal corporate feminist possible.

I feel like Kendall is constantly grappling with being so much like his father without trying to be. He endured abuse much like Logan, and you can tell he has much the same desire with his own children that Logan has, maybe without the paradoxical resentment. Even though we don’t see Kendall with his kids much, you can tell he’s protective and prioritizes his children as much as he realizes he should. I feel like he is just mini Logan and knows it, and hates that about himself; thus the reason for so much internal strife.

My reading of when Ken calls Roman Not a Real Person was that this is actually one of the most venomous this a member of the family could label someone. The back story of the show is the covering up of unaddressed crimes, such as SA, R, and people over Board, on the cruise lines. These victims and their involvement are deemed by the company, NRP - No Real Person involved. My reading is that what Ken is violent in this verbal attack. Ironically the show makes rather clear, that Roman is a victim of some heartbreaking aduse, that is never validated, addressed, let alone healed. ( personally after watching the show too many times, with focus character follows in each; Frank at some point has abused Roman)

@@christofferwikner3672 I know it's not in the longform video, but I can give my quick answer here -- Greg is my favorite character to watch on the show because he's so entertaining and silly, but I think he became as morally bankrupt as his cousins and uncle very early in season 1. He's more self-made than the Roy siblings in the sense that he didn't grow up rich, but he's still grifting off his family's wealth and made it to the bottom of the top by lying, cheating, and backstabbing. @DaroriDerEinzige
@DaroriDerEinzige 2 года назад
Greg is pretty much just the "Viewer" in the show. He represents "us". And he will get probably thrown under the bus at some point, don't get me wrong - not like "Hahaha jail and proverty for you! >:(" but he will probably develop some real ambitions and then, exactly in that moment, reality catches up and he will get for an example a CEO Positions with a good Salary but just as "puppet" for somebody elses. And his Grandpa will come along and say something like "... See. Vipers. Didn't you tell me you wanna some big changes? Well - At least you don't have to count on me anymore for money. I hope you're happy as a Prostitute."
@joetoaster447

Seeing him miss Greg in his list is just how the show portrays him. He's like a background character who can slip in and out unnoticed, but he's proven himself to be power hungry and treacherous at every opportunity. I can see him betraying whoever he can to get closer to whoever is in the throne.

Why did you have to start this out saying that Logan "obviously" loves his kids? He clearly does not. There's nothing wrong with acknowledging that. Parents often don't love their children. If you have to point it out "obviously.. in spite of everything, but still obviously" when talking about love between any two people no matter the relationship.. what you're describing isn't love.

Brilliant analysis. The most powerful moment of the show was the genuine unification of the siblings which has been subverted and sabotaged by the control freak patriarch Logan all their lives and it’s not even related so much as all if them being betrayed by Logan as it is about them bonding after seeing Kendall is at emotional rock bottom after nearly drowning possibly on purpose in the pool and then discovering the biggest reason for his pain is the fact that he has to live with the guilt of being involved in the accident that killed the young waiter at Shiv’s wedding unknown to Roman and Shiv. Also he explains that because his total breakdown of relations with Logan has Logan on high alert to Kendall being dangerous to him, that he is bound to face justice as up until that point his father only knew about the accident and had it covered up. Also totally agree that essentially Tom is not a bad guy and comes from a family and region with good old fashioned values and not giving up on Shiv despite all the vitriol he gets from the family and Shiv herself and realising that his union with Shiv presents itself with far more obstacles and insecurities than any privileges he receives marrying into one of America’s richest families.

We only started watching it last week and we are on the last half of the 3rd series already lol. It is so different to everything else we have watched with the same scenario of dad's business, rich kids. You start out trying to think who your favourite character is and really there aren't many likeable characters at all. However, when you see Kendall being torn down by his Dad and his siblings your heart goes out to him. Or then there is Tom who is a bit wet behind the ears but I feel for him the way he is treated by Shiv. It is just fantastically written and the casting spot on!

Lol. No. I mean really nope. They don't feel they were abused. They were actually abused. Emotional and psychological abuse is just as real and far more insidious. Logan didn't protect them from anything but poverty. He actively crippled his children so that would never know emotional ease or feel secure enough to take from him what he built for his own safety. That doesn't mean he doesn't love them. He can love them. Wife beaters love their spouses too. With so much psychological complexity in this show it is strange how many people feel qualified to sum up that aspect of the show. Very few people with the same lack of understanding of media or finance and willing to go in depth about that, but the human mind suuure, that's easy. No. No, it isn't.

This was a very good analysis and with fine points, imo, you've missed just how satirical Succession is. As well as at it's core, Succession, is a satirical comedy. Many fans attached far too much seriousness into the show. No we don't need to know the roots of Logan Roy. The series tells us just enough. It's an intelligent and well written series that does not take itself as seriously as many of the fans. It's the Dallas of the 2000's.

Tbf, can you have one without the other at this level of writing? I don't think so. For example Mcbride's 'The Righteous Gemstones' completely flips Armstrong's narrative by making obvious comedy the star which covers the subtle drama. Frankly, those two shows are two sides of the same coin, imo. Jesse Gemstone wants to be his powerful father's successor just as much as Kendall Roy. Interesting chat!

It's actually funny you bring up that example, because I tried maybe 5 episodes of that show and I couldn't really get into it because it's played so over the top. I'm sure part of it also had to do with my views on the religious setting, but I just couldn't get as invested. But lots of people who I tend to agree with are telling me how good Gemstones is, so I might have to give it another shot!

Great video. To answer your question, No. They’re ALL human trash. Some of the best moments are when we see them subtly insult, marginalize or even devastate everyday people, not to mention each other. I would question putting Shiv at “2nd worst”. She’s trash for the reasons you mention but people give Tom too much credit. He may be a pseudo-romantic but he’s a climber, a golddigger and a parasite in that marriage for his own gain. He wouldn’t look at her twice if she weren’t a Roy. Shiv and her brothers were bred as entitled slimeballs. Tom came from more humble beginnings and should know better yet blatantly aspires to be, not just rich and powerful, but part of that ilk and all of the ugliness (skulls, etc) pissing down the backs of ordinary people for his own enrichment. He may also be DL gay.
