Reducing your options can increase your style. How you can use a single lens to create a unified aesthetic in your filmmaking. It's also a great learning tool for beginners on a budget.

Cheapest way to do this is with a Canon EOS M with the Magic Lantern firmware that allows for higher bitrates, and the 7Artisans 25mm f/1.8 lens (it has a good focus throw). Overall, about $220. Results are better than you would think.

I shot an entire short film over 3 days with a 35mm. 35mm is my favorite photographic lens size for still photography, so I thought I would try shooting the film on that lens length. Loved the results.

35mm focal length is not easy to shoot with if u r not an expert. There r cine lenses that have focal length of 37. I think 37 to 38.5mm is easier and looks better. And then there is 40mm. 42mm. Which gives less distortion effect in a wide look. But 45 is a pure magic for realistic look with a slight hangover feel. Roger deakins shoots mostly 42 to 48mm.. sometimes 52.5. And 60mm too

This was very nicely explain and could not have ask for more. Makes sense why 50mm is used since it is a versatile focal length. I personally really like the telephoto look like a 70mm and having a 35mm lens also is a really good choice especially on how now you can punch in.

Hey man. Your videos are really amazing! I have soooo much of your tips in my film making and I constantly refer to your RU-vid videos to try and match the quality of your setup. But two tips, take it or leave it :) Drop your intro video. It makes your AMAZING quality footage look extremely cheap. The into look like something out of an advanced Power Point slide show. Secondly, your videos seems very long because it is only your voice speaking all the time. Add some background music, even just a little bit will make the world's difference. Adding diagrams and stuff will also help break the "just your face for 10min" problem....but yeah, please don't take this offensive. I am just trying to help :) I LOVE YOUR CONTENT!

I think need to have two lenses 35 and 85, which one can give portret, macro(detail) and second can give a big space of room or another place. If you have money for only one lens - to buy 50mm, becose it is lens not give a failure macro portret. I’m from Russia so my English very bad))))

35mm good focal length for cinema ? ? ?
@vitalbutinar
@vitalbutinar 3 года назад
We've shot quite a few short films with mostly only one or two lenses. I actually love the 35mm because on a super 35 sensor it gives a nice close up and can also capture wide shot. We've used the 35mm primarily because it's one of our fastest lenses and also one of the sharpest and newest ones (the only cine lens we bought). They say use what you've got right... I remember when we used to shoot on camcorders and not cinema cameras. So using only a few lenses and not a whole set seems like a minor problem... :)

Hitchcock, just as Rubidium said in the video, some here may have heard of him haha, he shot exclusively with a 50mm. One lens. Apparently he did okay.....so I've heard

When you say psycho was shot on a 50mm, does that mean a 50 on super 35mm film which is the equivalent of about 80mm on a full frame sensor?
@justinlee2638

super 35, the film industry doesn't use full frame sensor or use crop factor as a way of comparison
@spezialfilm
@spezialfilm 3 года назад
yes. If Crimson is right about. I think the movie wasn´t shot on "super 35", i believe this format came up later. They left the space for the audio tracks and used a frame 22mm wide (aka "academy").

My concern is more aperture oriented, in the event that I can't afford Cine lenses at the moment, what would be a better choice between the Sigma 18-35 F:1.8 for its lower aperture or the Canon 16-35 F:2.8, for the extra 2mm but with less lower aperture. Would the 1.8 aperture be used more often than the 2.8 in filming in general according to your experience or would the extra 2mm be more useful in your opinion. FYI, I have a Canon C200 and looking to invest in better glass than I have at the present.
@lovefirst6157
@lovefirst6157 4 года назад
If it is a event, it would be more useful to have the lower aperture since most camera allow you to punch in a little even micro four thirds have teleconverter so I would say lower aperture would be a better choice.
@brennanmartignoni4192
@brennanmartignoni4192 4 года назад
ChrisBee Media are you shooting full frame? If not, 18-35 for sure. Saves money and you get a wider aperture, 16-35 doesn’t have any benefits unless you’re shooting full frame
@Crimsonengine
@Crimsonengine 4 года назад
I have both and I would go with the sigma. The extra stop makes a big difference and the sigma quality is better at that price.
@chrisbeemedia4038
@chrisbeemedia4038 4 года назад
@@brennanmartignoni4192 it would be to shoot with the Canon C200 which is a Super 35mm sensor. Crop factor of about 1.54 very close to APSc which is 1.6 for Canon cameras usually.
@chrisbeemedia4038
@chrisbeemedia4038 4 года назад
@@Crimsonengine thanks for uour input. I would probably also get the Sigma 50-100 F:1.8 which would cover most of what would be needed to cover the most important equivalent primes for film making. Thanks again , I greatly value your opinion.

@@TyMapp mft or full frame would be personal preference. I'm constantly experimenting with all kinds of 50mm lens. Right now I use 50mm rokinon, 50mm slr magic, helios-44 and 50mm TV lenses. Majority of these lenses need adapters.

Hitchcock shot all of his 56 feature films on the 50 mm lens. Both on 35mm and VistaVision. The reason is that calculated against the flange distance of 18mm (the same distance we have in our eyes between lens and optical nerves) a 50 mm lens provides the least amount of distortion and gives us a realistic representation of the world. And less distortion is the way to engage an audience emotionally. All through the early motion picture history when the language of cinema was invented wide and tele lenses was viewed as special effects lenses. Now we have no reason to use them more than we think they "look cool". Because we have forgotten the language of cinema. People laugh and cry when they se Chaplin today. 100 year old movies. Absolutely no movies made today will have that effect in a hundred years. Because we make things we think "look cool" without any real knowledge.

Anyone knows exaclty why even with a great camera like maybe s1h or bmpcc you cant get that cinematic creamy motion like Arris camera for example? because you can match pretty much color sciece, but still you have a videoish motion in thats cameras. i need a scientific answer please
