Yeah, the electronic shutter works great for most things outside of sports/fast moving objects. Athletes legs and arms can get warped. The ball can get get won key as well. I think that’s the entire selling point of the Sony a9, a1, canon R3, and Nikon z9.
Hi Rob, the distorsion (mainly on the ball) is important if you are taking photograph from the side and players and ball are moving from left to right (or right to left). If you take photograph in front is less probable to have distorsion. I always suggest to use mechanical shutter for football unless you are placed on the end line (the one with the goal)
You have beautiful shots, but most of them capture the basketball player at the peak of their jump, where motion and potential artifacts due to rolling shutter are minimal. You are more likely to see it during fast breaks or fakes when the top and bottom of the subject are going in different directions.
I'll be doing more testing but I still stand by the fact that you could shoot a whole professional sports match with the electronic shutter on the R6 and be happy overall with the results.
I have an R6-ii as a backup to my R3, and i tested the electronic shutter myself. I get noticable rolling shutter for baseball and lacrosse. Well, noticable to me. I use mechanical shutter for those, and I've read (but not tested) that there's better low light performance/improved dynamic range using mechanical shutter also. I can live with less fps for better images.
I was very surprised by how well my R6 did while using the electronic shutter and shooting hockey the other night. I was worried about disabling the anti-flicker etc. but I didn't really see any rolling shutter/banding/etc. I was also happily surprised when shooting soccer and field hockey and again I didn't really notice anything to be worried about
Jared - I shoot an R6 with a 70-200mm EF II lens, and typically shoot hockey. However, when I shoot at 800iso or above, I really notice noise on my RAW images. How is it that others shoot Hockey on an R6 (same lens) and don't have the noise? Rob was even shooting at iso 5,8 and 10,000iso.... WHAT in the world am I doing wrong? All I shoot is hockey for sports (U13 and U11)... so if you have any pointers, please let me know!
I have had no issues with basketball or football ⚽️. However, baseball is another story. The bat looks as if it is bending. I would think that cricket would be the same.
Surprised you didn't see any banding. I see banding threw the view finder in my house, when using the electronic shutter on the R6, as well during night games outside.
My bad. I still think banding is caused by flickering lights. Reduce shutter speed to 1/50 or 1/60 depending on frequency of lights. This risks very high iso and motion blur. Banding and distortion of fast moving subjects is one reason to avoid electronic shutter.
A great test, Rob. Some great shots as a result! Here's what I'd be interested in, typically rolling shuttering in video is predominantly down to the camera itself moving side to side really fast, it would be interesting to see if the same thing happens with the photos where you track the subject really fast side to side. I know the footballers would've been moving at speed, but maybe subjects moving even faster... would it be a viable option for fast moving subjects like F1 cars for example. I literally have no interest in shooting F1, I'm just curious to see if the electronic shutter, with it being the future, really does push the limits.
You'll probably only see rolling shutter if the camera is fixed, not if you are following the car as it moves. If you are properly following a fast object then the car should be relatively stable on the focal plane.
Great vidoe Rob! I learned a lot from your testing. Do you have any tips for auto focus when multiple players are in the view? Does the face recognition get confused about who you want to focus on? Is it better to use center point focus, and to keep the center point on that person's face? Thank you very much!
Between 4:00 and 4:11 as the ball left the hand they look distorted to my old tired eyes. Is this the natural phenomenon you described or should I go to Specsavers?
The guy with white top, orange shorts at 4:06 has oval ball. Don't shoot basketball so can't tell if it's just left his hand or he is about to catch it.
Thanks for the really informative field tests Rob. I have recently purchased the R6 and when shooting basketball I find it difficult to follow the action in the viewfinder with the blackout between shots. particularly vertical movement. Any tips? Also what do you think is the best place to take shots from given the number of players coming across your viewfinder?
Hi Bill. Make sure you're in the multi frame 'H' mode and turn off image review. For basketball I tend to prefer to be out at the corner or in close by the side of the basket. I find anywhere inbetween I don't get enough of a clean look at the action.
Hello Rob, you have the Canon 300mm 2.8 IS, can the R6 with this lens achieve the 12p/s with the mechanical shutter? According to the manual it is not listed. Thx Jan
@@RobSambles Hey Rob. Great video. I'll be picking up a R6 in the spring. I have the same 70-200. How many fps can you get on the mechanical shutter?. I shot a lot of lacrosse, and I think rolling shutter might be an issue as those sticks get sluggish around. Thanks.
Hey brother I'm using Canon eos r5. Do you know how to slower electronic shutter? I use the slowest one still let take 3-5 photos per press. That's too much most of the time I get same photos for like 5-7 shots
4:39 a bit of distortion? Looks like a watermelon lol Issue also visible at 4:01 and 4:06. Shame, only the A9 can do this without issues but not bad still for the R6.
Rob - how do you reduce shutter shock. Shooting soccer last weekend, I experienced a lot of blurred images around 1/200 to 1/250 with the R6 mounted on a tripod. Is this due to the IS from the EF lens or IBIS within the camera? I know you did a review of the R6 a while back. Didn’t know if you experienced the same thing. Love your content by the way.
I want to get the r6 but worried about distorted images. I mainly shoot motorsports but have done nfl and want to do hockey. Last thing I'd want is something distorted ruining the shot. Thanks for the video!
I thinking it's more about the ball spinning rapidly on the back spin coming off the finger than anything else, you can get images that look like this from a DSLR sometimes. Remember the electronic shutter is just one option - the mechanical shutter works fantastically too.
I don't think that's anything to do with the camera mate - it would be very unusual to get distortion in two different directions like that - just long arms on that guy I think
Basketball with r6 electronic ? Nope , too much distortion man ... Your shots here are on practice ... no speed at all ...

Rob the only mirrorless sports photog that tests a canon r6 in all modes that don’t make it mirrorless and 6 months from, now he will be telling u to buy the R1 for sports for 6 grand lol .... if u can’t use the features such as eye face head tracking and just dumb down this camera to a mirror only at not even 12 FPS mechanical shutter with just center point focus then why are we here. I got lent a Sony a9ii and used it like it was supposed to with all electronic shutter shooting basketball with eye and head tracking on and it beat the shit out of my 1dxii as far as in focus shots dramatically - the only downsides were Sony u have to get use to changing the color and the buffer was not unlimited as my 1dxii is especially with a fast c fast card ! 20 FPS u just gotta use it sparingly for 3-4 sec bursts. My iPhone can burst forever with head tracking and it even tells us u have 10or 20:or what have u in a burst and picks out what it thinks is best deleting rest canon catch up to an iPhone ? Not yet
You are not limited to centre point focus in mechanical shutter. You can set anyone of up to around 6000 as start point and move it around with the joystick. Head face and eye tracking work fine. Regardless of brand electronic shutter can cause distortion especially when panning fast moving subjects side-to-side. I have had no buffer issues on my R6. Rob is showing all the features available to a sports photographer. His videos are informative and reflect real-life use. You have Canon 1dx2 therefore some Canon lenses. Borrow an R6 and Adapter and try it. If you still think it is rubbish, fine, but don't criticise something you haven't tried and don't shoot the messenger.
In other places you post links to Paul Rutherford's review of the R5 and repeat some of his views here. He failed to set up the camera properly and blamed the camera especially in autofocus. You sing the praises of the Sony A9ii. Page 48 of its manual shows you can only reach maximum FPS under certain conditions. I checked your RU-vid channel which has no content apart from negative comments. Can you post a link to photos you have taken along with exif so we can see the gear you used?
