The Limited is slept on because of chrome. It's all business underneath. Locking Torsen center diff, full time 4WD, luxury features. It is a mini Land Cruiser/GX/LX. A Limited 4WD with A-TRAC and 4LO is unstoppable. If that's not enough, install a rear locking diff, and at that point you're better off than a TRD PRO. The L4L or L4H on the Limited 4Runner is locked center diff 4lo or 4hi, the same as a part time 4Runner (sr5/OR/TRDPRO). ATRAC is crawl control without the cruise control, it'll simulate having front and rear locking diffs by actuating the ABS brake systems to prevent wheel slippage/or wheel spin where there is little to no traction. Benefits of Full Time 4WD is better and more even tire wear and better handling (especially in SNOW and RAIN!). The Land Cruiser and Land Rover Defender are full time 4wd as well.

Thanks for explanation, even Toy dealer could not explain that to me. Glad I went with limited, now I am looking for biggest wheels but I do not want to loose ground clearance and do not want to do any modifications to suspension...Any advice? ( I need it for snow, not rocks)

The limited 4R is not your soccer mom 4R like some would think. It comes with a torsen center differential very similar to the one in the GX460 and land cruiser 200. It is very capable off-road after simple modifications like what you have done here. Glad you are enjoying it!

I absolutely love the Limited. Many people forget to mention the A-Trac system which is very similar to crawl control. Love the All Wheel Drive default mode as well for everyday driving. It really makes for a sure footed beast when tackling quickly changing road conditions..ie. ice, snow, rain. etc. IMHO, I think it's Toyota's best trim level.

I used to want a TRD Offroad, but after learning the Limited has a better sound system, ventilated seats, & full-time 4wd, it's a no-brainer. Realistically, I'm almost never gonna go off-road. I'd rather pay for features I'm gonna use and not ones I won't, and can always modify the Limited to my liking for the 2 or 3 times a year I _will_ go off-road.

I had my choice of pretty much either one I chose the limited and I don't regret it one bit. The added luxury stuff on the inside is what sold me. I really don't go 4 wheeling to where I could justify the extra money. Maybe times when I take my sons fishing or when we go camping and the limited can easily do both. I'm just gonna use the money I saved and put it into the limited.

One thought about the wheelspin you experienced...in 4lo as you indicated you were, activating Atrac would have stopped the wheelspin and transferred power to the wheel that had grip, and that would be for both front and rear. Atrac is standard on Limited trim.

Just saw video, I own a limited slightly modified with a lift and wheels..... It's very capable off road ..... I've done all the trails in and around Sedona... To include the power line..... Atrac simulates having lockers .... You always have power going to the wheels that have grip..... I saw you said you where spinning tire's.... So I assume you being a Jeep guy ... Wasn't familiar with Atrac and didn't have it engaged

I’m glad to see more people modding out their Limited model. There aren’t very many people that I’ve seen doing this. I’m not sure if they think it’s not capable and only capable of being a grocery getter but obviously it’s completely capable as you found out. I currently have a 2016 Limited model as well and I absolutely love mine. I love that it’s full time 4WD with some luxuries. I’ve done quite a few mods myself. I deleted the XREAS shock setup and replaced it with Fox 2.0 coil overs in the front and 2.0’s in the rear. Replaced the rear coils with ARB medium duty coils. This added about a 2-3” lift. I’m currently running Pro Comp Black Predator Rims wrapped in BFG KO2’s, 285/65 18. And finally I swapped out my UCA’s with JBA Off-road UCA’s. I’ve changed my headlights and taillights and added some off-road lights as well. There are so many things you can do with these 4Runners. The possibilities are endless and quite addicting.

My 2008 doesn't go off road, but the few times that I have taken my 2016 off-road, I didn't even have to think about 4 wheel drive until I was done. Awesome video man. I'm an AZ native as well. I've got a 2010 4runner limited with stock everything. I'll be moving out to Alaska this summer and wanted to get a setup similar to what you've got here. I'm debating starting out with a leveling kit and then upgrading to a lift later on. Do you think that if I use a similar tire/wheel/spacer combo but found I wanted to upgrade to 2-3" lift later on, would I be able to keep the same wheel/tire combo? Thanks the great content!
@4XTRAIL

Hey Aidan! Very cool - yes I actually saw a 3rd gen 4Runner the other day with about 3” of lift and 33s and it looked good with that combo. Shouldn’t be any problem keeping the same tire size and going up in lift down the road. Hope the move to AK is a good one - what a beautiful state and no shortage of wheeling up there 🤙🏼

Is a Limited with a leveling kit and bigger tires really a stock vehicle as the headline suggests? Did you try it off road before the leveling kit and larger tires, and if so, what were the shortcomings?
@4XTRAIL
@4XTRAIL Год назад
Hey! I definitely see where you’re coming from, however in my opinion removing the factory rake by adding two pucks to the top of the factory front struts and switching to (slightly) larger all terrain tires is not changing much from the factory setup. I did not wheel this vehicle before doing this mainly due to the 20” wheels and street tires that come from the factory. Thanks for the comment!

@@4XTRAIL I recently bought a 2018 Limited that I'm planning to take off road quite a bit when I take a 2 month trip to Colorado, Utah and Arizona later this year. I am replacing the running boards with rock rails and adding a set of 3 steel skid plates but not doing any leveling or a lift or going to bigger tires. From everything I've seen, the Limited can do plenty of off roading with the stock configuration. But I am new to off roading and won't do extreme trails.

hey! i have a 2017 4 runner limited with its stock 20” tires. i had ordered the 17” rim winter tires for up north living and the caliper is in the way and won’t even let the tire be mounted on. is this because the 17” is unable to fit the limited, or are there some adjustments/replacements to make the 17” fitted and put on? online some say to shave down the clipper but that still wouldn’t work since the wheels balancing weights are put on and align with the closest point of where the caliper turns. if you have any suggestions i would really appreciate it, if you respond i can give you my email to make communication easier. i’m a girl in my 20’s and don’t want the money spent on the tires to be a bust and need some adobe and greatly appreciate it! thanks

Hey E, sorry to hear you’ve had some trouble! I had no issues mounting the TRD SEMA wheels featured in this video to our 2017 limited. Must be the type of wheel you ordered isn’t compatible with the 4Runner? My best suggestion would be going with TRD or RockTrix wheels and make sure they are made to work with the 4Runner. I would not shave down the caliper at all. Hope that helps!

Are you saying you were able to leave the XREAS system intact? Every mod I see involves removing that system. I can’t believe what that XREAS system does to improve ride quality. I want a lift but I don’t ever want to lose the XREAS. My 4Runner is a 2016 Limited. I’d be pretty excited if I could gain two inches and keep the XREAS.

I ended up installing the Cornfed 1” leveling spacers on mine and kept the X-Reas system. I don’t think I could have gotten a taller spacer in there due to the length of the shock hoses when trying to get it installed back on the top mount. Honestly I went with Cornfed as a cost-effective option before I put Bilstein’s in it when the X-Reas system fails. It needed an alignment after the spacer install as well.
