I wanted to address a popular question I get asked alot: can you work and go to nursing school??? Stay tuned for what I think about working and going to nursing school.. Connect with me Instagram: / aalexisnicole Twitter: / thenursenook
Working for me is not an option , it's a must , I'm too partial to having transportation, health insurance , roof over my head , etc. If you can go to school without work distractions that's great, few of us have that option.
It's a sacrifice , no doubt , I'm just saying I have to work while going to school , I have to keep a roof over my head , I would be homeless if I didn't work , plus no public transportation where I live. Those who have family to support them while they go to school , they are blessed , I don't have that. For me , it's about the chance to save lives and improve quality of life that makes me want to be a nurse yes , the pay would be better than my current job , but knowing I make a positive impact is what motivates me.
The semester I did my first clinical class I was able to handle a 40 hour work week and still get good grades. By the time my first MedSurg clinical started I had to cut my work hours and only work three days a week. Because I needed to accommodate for more study time. Working in nursing school definitely is not easy so far but it's also not impossible. I've managed to find ways to make it work. Well I might not always have time for family and friends and a social life I am in high honors in my nursing school.
I'm in nursing school too full time and I work prn "as needed" pick up shifts 4s 8s 12s day shift or nights when I can or basically when there is not a test coming up. and I work as an nurse aide.
That's awesome Brittany! It's nice to hear that people are able to work while being a full time nursing student. It inspires me being a nursing student myself to have a great balance with my time :) Thank you for sharing!
Working is doable depending on the person. At my hospital, 30 hours is considered full-time. I am in a BSN program an my curriculum is a lot busier compared to my friend that attends a ASN at a community college. I personally, dropped my hours to 20 hours/week- the minimum to keep health insurance and accepted the fact that I will be SUPER broke for the remaining of the program (1 year). It's important for me to pass my classes well and keep my sanity. One girl from our program was in a car accident due to sleep deprivation related working full time, dealing with lectures, clinical, family, and study time. Last semester, I was admitted 3 times to the ED due to problems related to stress. In my opinion, so not worth it. I dropped my hours, I am making it work because Burn out starts at nursing school and we all know it.
I accepted being broke as soon as I started the program. It is so important to take care of ourselves as future nurses! If we don't take care of ourselves we can't take care of our patients to the best of our abilities. I'm happy you dropped your hours, your sanity is so important!
The Nurse Nook so, I’m a full time lead Dental assistant. And I’m interesting in going back to school for RN. Is it impossible to work full time and going to school full time as well? I have to work because I have car payments, 2 girls and have to pay for rent 🤔🤦♀️
I start nursing school in august and I already took every class that I could possibly take before I applied for my seat so I have 4 semesters left and 8 credits each of those semesters which is considered part time at my school. Plus I have a very low low stress job where I will be able to study 60% of my time spent at work so I'm gonna work full time. My advice to people that have to work and go to nursing school is get what you can out of the way to make your work load not so heavy each semester
@@Mayrita77 I worked as a cna and it was a state job so I got mandated every other week because people called out left and right. That part was stressful but I made it work. I knew what my goal was and I was determined to let nothing stop me. So I did and graduated with cum laude. It can be done
@@Mayrita77 p.s. I made my original status before nursing school started lol. It was very stressful how wrong I was, but I still made it work I have been a nurse for 2 years now almost done with my BSN
@@shydewalters10 Congratulations! That’s great! I used to work as a CNA and it’s stressful in my opinion, very physically demanding. So I was wondering what kind of job you had
@@Mayrita77 Thank you.. Yes I was very optimistic going into nursing school lol. My job was really one of the easier CNA jobs, but it was still stressful lol. We only had a 1 cna to 3 patient ratio which is awsome as a CNA and they where special needs so majority didn't walk or talk they actually slept at night. I worked overnight so I had free time to study
@@OhenesJourney Nice! How long do you think that will take you? Looking to do an RN program and eventually become an NP but I wasn't aware there were dual programs.
I'm going back watching over your videos before work . So thrilled I came across this video since it's been heavy on my mind . I work full time at a daycare and a single mom of four kids .Also just took on a second job as a nanny . Yet my major goal is to become a NICU nurse .
Hey Alexis! I started following you almost 2 months ago. Your such a inspiration and I think your videos will definitely help me get through nursing school. I'm starting my BSN this fall and working 30 hrs a week at a dental office. Hope I can pull this off. Scratch that... I know I can pull it off! You mention in one of your videos on how to stay organized.. can you make a video on "what supplies you bought for your first semester for nursing school and how you stayed organized" thank you!!! Alexa 🥰🥰🥰
Tysm for touching on this subject, I've been working all types of jobs since I graduated high school and it definitely is a struggle. I'm currently a cashier at a hospital and plan on getting my cna certification over the summer to try and move up. I'll be taking your advice about applying for a per diem position :) Love the headband btw xoxo
Isabel V-Silva I plan on doing cna too. My plan is cna to lpn then lpn to rn. Depending on finances then rn to bsn. I would personally love to get into plastic surgery field or something dealing with cancer reconstruction. What is your end goal:)
That's Awesome! I'm currently attending a CC to transfer to a 2year ADN to BSN program. (This way was much more affordable for me) And I'm leaning towards the Neonatal field but being that there are a variety of fields to choose from I'm pretty much open to anything. My end goal is to just have a CAREER not a job. Nonetheless, I hope you make it to your end goal - plastic surgery/reconstruction sounds interesting :)
Hey Isabel! I'm on the same boat as you girl, so I loved reading your comment. Right now I volunteer at a children's hospital and I LOVE IT. But I am still keeping an open mind about everything else because I still have a year of nursing school left. I couldn't agree more when you said your end goal is a Career. Hope to stay in touch with updates on your nursing career! Best of luck with everything :)
I totally agree that it depends on the person. I work around 25 hours a week but I only survive because I'm a crazy planner and organizer. For others in my class, work was the primary reason they didn't pass one or more classes with a 76%. Going in I heard all these horror stories about how I'll never have time to do anything which totally isn't true (not always lol). Anyways, I think your advice was very spot on :)
ummmm ok? That came out of nowhere. Seems like you have a bone to pick. To say all _____ are heroes would be disingenuous. Of course not all nurses are heroes. There are terrible people in every profession.
I study Adult Nursing in the UK and I will say that it is possible to work whilst completing a nursing degree. I manage to work part time, volunteer and complete my nursing degree with ease, but I think a lot of that is because I am a very organised person. I am also a busy body!!! But like you said, it depends on the person. If you can work during your nursing degree try it out!
I have a part time job right now and I am going to start the nursing program this summer, and I was freaking out that i wasn't going to be able to handle the pressure. But with your advice i think ill do fine :)
You can do it Natalie! I felt the same way too when I started nursing school. But Stay positive and update us on your nursing school career! I am sure you will do amazing :)
This is crazy! I am in the EXACT situation as you during this time. 1st and 2nd semester of nursing school, I did not work. Now ending my 3rd semester going into the 4th, I have a interview as a NAP, in which I am considering. Although, I heard 4th sem is the worse so now I am reconsidering haha. Thank you for this video!
I'm going back to school soon and thinking about working 1-2 days per week (I'm a cocktail server and training to bartend). I'd also consider being a CNA, but that would be for experience, not money...I suppose they're equally important. I plan to keep making videos throughout my journey, so I guess we'll see! Thanks for the video - love your channel :)
I am a high school senior right now and nursing school is my goal, your videos are helping me to figure out what I need to do and what I need to be doing. Also, I love you scrubs in this vid what are they???? Thank you so much for posting these :D
I started working part-time during the pandemic since my classes are now online and placements are cancelled! Definitely a good choice to get some experience and that pandemic pay $$$
If working is a must like it is for me...try saving as much as possible (income, school refunds, tax refund) while doing prerequisites and by the time it starts getting tough you could possibly have enough saved you could work a part time and the money saved can supplement. It sucks but I’ve saved every penny I could with 2 kids so that when nursing school gets hard I can cut back working and not suffer financially.
I’m a single mom to a toddler, so I have to work through school to support my girl. I’m finishing my last semester of prerequisites this summer, so when I hit my first semester of nursing school, I’ll definitely have to go down to prn or part time. But I absolutely couldn’t do it without my support system (aka my parents) who provide free day care. And student loans are gonna have to happen, which sucks, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
I know you posted this a while ago, but if you could answer this whenever, I would appreciate it. What is your job you do? Reason being is I'm gonna do my nursing program in a year or so after my pre-requisite classes are done and work part time as a CNA. I'm just worried I might not be able to work
@@deirdrestephens3011 When I was going to nursing school, I worked as a CNA in an assistive living facility. I went to school from 7am-2:30pm and I worked from 3p-11:30pm. It was rough but I did it.
Good advice. I’ve been thinking how I’ll manage because right now my job is helping me pay for school but I’ll be getting another to pay for classes and just focus on school before i get in the program. I’m truly excited😩
I worked 40 hours a week freshmen year with 14 units. IT WAS HELL, you’ll get depressed with in the first two weeks. Now I work only Friday, Saturday, Sunday and have 4 days to go to class and study. DO HOMEWORK A WEEK BEFORE ITS EVEN DUE!!!
I’m about to start my Nursing Program in January and I don’t plan to work the first semester to have a strong start and since I have summer off I’ll work full time in the summer and then be off in the fall.
Applying to work study jobs right now, looking for something that will hopefully just provide enough for me to pay for car insurance and not go totally broke. Great video
Whats are the brand of your glasses?? What is your routine you have beautiful skin! Is it well seen to wear make up on clinicals ans what do you use if so? Do you work with respiratory therapist? Is so what do you think of them? Love from canada 🇨🇦
Can you tell us about your job? Like what unit or floor you're on. Do you plan to work there after graduation? Etc I was just curious and would like to learn more
Here in Brazil you need to find a job, WHEN you find it, you work and now can think in study. But, if you want to study in a Federal University, the bests, you can not to work because the most of them is integral period, so, you have a problem. In the end, the Public Universities are to rich people, and the private are to poor peoples. Its funny to not say sad. To be a sucessfull people here you need to be rich or a genius, and we have a lot of genius, but the government kill us in many ways you can think. Sorry for my english, I'm learning.
Hey I love your channel it really inspired me to forget what people say about failing and do you i was wandering what teas book/study guide would you recommend for me whose preparing for the teas
I'm getting ready to apply to nursing school by this summer. I usually work 3 12s NOC shift. If I go to part time, I lose my health insurance coverage and I need the top notch coverage as I have Crohn's Disease. I also have student loans from previous degree, and have to pay rent. I would not be able to take out additional loans for basic living expenses. I live in Seattle, Washington if that helps. Do you think its possible me to still work and do well in nursing school? Any advice, please!!
I worked during my second semester of nursing school as a pharmacy tech and thought that it would help with pharmacology but it didn't due to the hours (night shift) and working full time. I got a 72 in the course and had to retake it because you need a 78 to pass .
hey Nurse Nook you should do a vid Doctor Mike (RU-vidr) on hospitals from you guys POV( point of view) and how bother of you jobs are similar and different also a Q and A wit him would be nice it's just a thought love your channel
Do you live at home? My mom and dad are nurses and they have been motivating me to go to nursing school because it is a broad field. Would you say you have to stay with parents or family during nursing school?
Jesus died for you, he was buried and he rose again according to the scriptures. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is the Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved! Please turn to God, repent from your sins and ask the Lord Jesus to enter in your heart. He loves you and he wants to forgive you and save you. God bless you! ❤️
I currently live in Orlando and I'm looking at the nursing program at Seminole State. I was wondering how you got your CNA certification? I really want to work at a hospital and gain experience. any advice? Thank you!
I don't have my CNA license, I was hired as a nurse tech which is the same thing just with a different title, but I was able to qualify for this position because I had completed two semesters of nursing school.
Bekah Cruz I think it depends on the program. Mine will be 4 days a week, two 8 hr class days and two 12 hr clinical days. Then if you dont have your general education classes done before the program you have to fit those in too.
I study Adult Nursing in the UK. Right now I have to complete 22.5hr/week of placement (clinical) and one full day a week of theory at University. This varies throughout the year.
