Have you guys felt the need to upgrade your brakes on your 4wd?

Not yet. My '89 GQ can still lock the wheels, so plenty of braking power and being a manual with 4.2 diesel, I almost never need to use my brakes on decents (assuming I grab the right gear) and in fact more often need to use a little bit of accelerator. When they are due, I will be considering larger rotators, braided lines etc. Another thing you didn't mention about braided lines, is the bulging of the lines when braking. Braided lines give less, thus give a firmer feeling under braking which is why most race cars like using them.

Awesome vid as always Patty, I feel like the 80 doesn't get as much love from the fanbase these days because of Liam's GQ makeover, but it's awesome to see the odd little updates. The 80's really turning into a proper touring rig, and that's coming from a Patrol guy!

The most overlooked component is the proportioning valve. Over the years, I have changed everything with little result. It wasn't until I put a new proportioning valve on that I actually got good brakes. Now it pulls up like a supercar.

Bloody good job mate, well done! Like your enthusiasm, open & honest demeanour and having a good crack without Bullshit!! Like you I keep my vehicle & camping gear reasonably simple versus some other 4WD shows with all the bells & whistles, complications and massive weights their hauling around. My early BT50 just racked up 252,000 clicks of reliable trekking in pretty much most environments around OZ including working as a driving instructor, engineering work at mining & resource sites etc. Next time your in East Gippsland, would be thrilled to hook up.

Great vid man. Might be worth mentioning the brakes are only as good as the grip you have available. I did a brake upgrade on my 97" FT spec (which already has the bigger brakes) with some performance brake bits, huge difference in instant stopping power and long decents! Even with the ABS on the 80 (which is very rudimetary), I had to pull the fuse for most road conditions. It actually causes a major increase in the stopping distance on gravel. The only benefit with keeping it would be the advantage of having steering while you run off the gravel or into some game haha

Unfortunately braided brake lines are a really bad idea on a 4wd that does remote travel! The reason being……….you can’t clamp them like you can a rubber hose. So if there’s ever an issue off road you can’t just clamp a hose to ensure you still have brake pressure to the other brakes.

Ive got a 1996 LC80 and already w/the bigger brakes, but they too I found lacking, so I've upgraded to the Heavy Duty dba rotors and Bendix pads. Though I'm yet to upgrade to braided lines. I"ll do them along with when I upgrade my brake booster. Great episode. 👍

Love the channel and your work boys, cracker of an episode. I've gotta say though this convinced me to stick with my stock brakes. If you're looking to shorten the braking distance, any possibility of locking up Is going against the gain. Rather put both feet into it than thinking about having ro regulate brake pedal pressure when avoiding an accident.
@AussieArvos
@AussieArvos Год назад
Thabjs Brad! yeah makes you think!, wouldn't be an issue if you had ABS but i definitily can't just slam it to the floor like i used too, have to be more controlled. i have noticed since making this that the bigger rotors have been better for more repetitive braking e.g long hills, as the caliper stays cooler.

how to kill pads and warp rotors 101...might get lucky, but if you find anything suspicious switch pads. Also most manufacturera have stopped advising the bedding in procedure given here. Anyway recommendation is 100-200 km light braking (exept emergencys) and as an option the bedding in as shown here, however it usually is not necessary anymore with modern pad materials. The main thing to remember is that if you’re going to driving a big heavy 4WD around you wont be able to stop like a proper car - because physics. 4WD tyres have relatively poor grip, the dynamics are poor and the weight is a lot of kinetic energy to lose. So drive slower and conservatively on public roads and try not to kill anyone - im looking at you lifted ranger drivers!

The downside to braided lines is if you damage them out 4wding etc (yes a stick or branch can still puncture them) you won’t be able to crimp them off. And it’s not a race car so the effective benefit of braided lines is zero.
@jayarre1839
@jayarre1839 Год назад
load of shit, braided lines lessen fade because they’re not rubber
@k2svpete
@k2svpete Год назад
You don't need a race car to benefit from braided lines. The main improvement over standard rubber lines is the reduced expansion of the line under braking, giving more feel and allowing greater hydraulic force to be applied to the pistons, rather than lost to expansion in the lines.
