A lot of youtube channels are suffering with advertising the past week! Your content has no bad language, no offensive content and is purely educational in my mind, hopefully RU-vid can cut you guys some slack!

RU-vid can't choke googles profit out for too long, It won't last. Moreover advertisers are losing tons of money, and since when were they responsible for the video content, I've never once equated the two. If this continues, youtube will turn into another regular cable channel with only approved content, the content creators will move to another platform and google will just lose out.

Interesting comparison you make here, shame they never went blade to blade in history so we'd know which one would win there. Cheers, Hilbert

I wonder how a steel khopesh would fair.
@b1laxson
@b1laxson 7 лет назад
Not an expert on Khopesh but I suspect steel/iron khopesh are not historical but if they were would be rare. They might appear in the very early iron age when the material is only in the hands of super rich. Goods of the super rich tend to survive, or for Eygpt be buried in tombs, so we "likely" should have found them already. My core thought on it is once you have iron in quantity for weapons you also have iron for armor. If you have iron armor you don't want a shape designed for unarmored people, like the Khopesh. Also Eygpt by the time of the iron age had already been dominated by the Ptolomeic Greeks and then Romans. So the top notch early iron weapons would more likely have no longer followed the Eygpt culture Khopesh.

+Kokfan50- There may or may not be some conspiring going on involving myself, Thrand, and Wes which may or may not result in a Spatha-length steel khopesh being made.

There are some African blades such as the Makraka, Mambele sickle-blade or the Shotel might be good examples to test and may have developed from kopesh and often have a steel or iron blade.

To Thegn: Question/Challenge about the Khopesh. How the does Khopesh perform in off center thrust cuts? (Im trying to figure out a phrase to explain this). I was thinking more on its use in shield wall vs shield wall and how thrusting might be blinded by each other's shield. If you thrust with a Khopesh you might miss with the ~2" wide tip. However there is still the other ~4" width of the curve. (measurements are guesses, I don't have one available to put a ruler on). The curve would allow you to get a sliding cut on the push cut and possibly on the draw cut. A shield man then could press in tight on the enemy thrusting with this "wide" danger zone to inflict wounds. Most depictions of the era suggest torso armor but unarmored limbs. The legs in particular could be wounded with the "thrust to cut" action. So to would the be neck of the average soldier. This might add to the validity of this strange weapon (plus the ability to hook and pull shields/limbs with the blunt side of the curve) So Thegn, what are you thoughts on this? Could you run a test for it? Where you thrust so the point misses the target but the curve does? (or have you already).

Pretty sure the kopesh and lang seax was a popular weapon use amongst the nobleman or the more wealthier warriors, due to the standard infantryman their up against wore no armour or padded armor. Similar how early medieval period where knights and lords uses the falchion against padded armour infantryman.

I'm wanting to know which sword is better the Egyptian Khopesh or the Celtic/Greek Falcata. For both of these weapons had a type of cure in the blade allowing the blade to make impact behind the shield, and even had a type of deadly blow upon the blade.

Unfortunately I do not own a seax. What I 've been wondering about: when confronted with mail: wouldn't it break limbs or ribs when used with the blunt back? That would have been sufficient in real battle scenarios, wouldn' t it? And you do not risk dulling the sharp edge for situations where you might need that. Anyway, just an idea, and wondering how it would work out in reality.

@b1laxson
@b1laxson 7 лет назад
Yeah, Im surprised how well it does. It does have some drawbacks but actually does well. Plus it has the ability to hook objects which a normal sword doesn't. While not so relevant in duels in group (aka army) fights having shield man yank around the shields of enemies lets nearby spear/pike wielders enjoy the harvest.

It's pronounced more like "sea-axe" without a pause between the words. To be completely correct, the "e" is pronounced like the first "e" in "ever" and the "a" like in "dark".

@ZeroTheHeroGOAT
@ZeroTheHeroGOAT 7 лет назад
Either way, it's Old English so it doesn't matter how Vikings or Icelanders pronounce(d) it. We say "Langrknifr" / "Langknifr", anyway. In modern times we would probably use "huggert", which are curved or straight, short swords (knives) primarily for chopping.

The axe men that became the Norse, and the Angles, Saxons, Jutes, and Franks were all germanic peoples. The Vikings came from the axe men, aka germanic peoples, and used many of the same weapons. Look into the languages of Old English, Old Norse, etc, and what root they all came from

Hi, I just came to give my opinion on this unfair topic, you see, if these two armies do ever engage in combat, the steel weapon wielders will be superior to the bronze weapon wielders, even if these steel weapon wielders are just coward, overated and hardly trained savages. Deal with it, people, vikings weren't that great.
