Canada is Sad and Depressing

Theses are just some of my thoughts on the day to day life in Canada. I’ve talked with many people and they experience these things too. Some students commuted suicide in The university of Toronto and in VIU - Vancouver Island University in British Columbia witnessed a suicide by a student recently too.
What are your thoughts and please correct me if I’m wrong. Mental health is important!

I am so flustered with Canada, I just don't get it. Why the frack do people live there!? It's like the only country in the world where it's almost impossible to get a stable income with a trade (even with the oil patch!). It's like everyone and their dog, grandma and great grandchildren was told to learn a trade and go to the oil patch. The job market absolutely sucks in the oil patch. The working conditions suck, the weather sucks and you're treated like garbage. Everyone is bending over backwards for these greedy/cruel oil companies. Wages are stagnating. Work is volatile. Meanwhile in France there's construction everywhere, nobody wants to learn a trade and get dirty. So there are thousands of vacant jobs to be filled and nobody cares. So yeah, I'm a Canadian living in France. Canada can eat my shit and burn, I don't care.

Sweetheart, the certificate is worth the hard work, it won't come easy. Some of us went through it, came out very successful, proud and happy even though we are much older. Its a foreign land where the certificate is inestimable, just learn how to get through the door the right way and the sky will be your limit. No back door in those countries, I'm glad I successfully acquired my degrees the hard way. I thank the system for providing all the facilities to make one succeed, please patiently go through it and take advantage of it. The hope for a better tomorrow makes easy to take. You even have student loans over there to help you go to school, i couldn't even access such when i was going to school way back and neither can my children because Nigerian does have such great plans for her youths. No jobs for millions of youths even now. In all things my dear give thanks and keep your switch of faith turned on. I didn't understand the parting hard until you explained. Thanks for this video.

@Image of God i think we are both on different pages, as my points are so far from yours. When i went to University in 1992 I didn't have that privilege and most certainly would have loved a system that allowed me to take a loan to advance myself academically and pay back afterwards. Its not the questions of the number of children per household but that we have a government that has no plans and has never had for its youths nor the elderly. Bear in mind that if the countries that harbour our youths even today for whatever reason had no plans and packages that allows the youths benefit by advancing them edcuational loans and pay back afterwards, this discussion wouldn't even be taking place right now. I maintain that if Nigeria had no plan back then to help its youth advance their careers and still do not have..... Then God help us.

Even a lot of Canadians out there refuse to acknowledge anything but the truth is, we got some serious economic and social issues. A high cost of living but low wages/salaries. Degrees that trapped us in debt, and landed us a job we didn't study for if were even lucky to land something. Then there's traffic. Horrible Public Transportation and alternatives. Long Commute times. Cold and Dark 8 months out of 12. There is still a lot of systemic discrimination and general racism. Overall, I am seeing people slowly breaking apart and becoming depressed as time goes on...but everyone out there, will have you believe, everything is just fine.

This may not get any traction because this comment is very late, but there is one thing people are only just recently are starting to understand about living in a northern climate. This goes for Canadians who have lived here forever and people who are new to canada. When you live in a northern climate you have to change your diet. You can NOT be healthy on a high carbohidrate diet in a northern climate. You will perk up a little bit in the summer time, but in the winter time you need to take D3 supplements. The other problem is the recommended d3 intake given by the canadian government is wrong due to a miscalculation of a study done almost 60 years ago. It states you need 500 iu's of d3 per day, in reality you need 5000. In the winter time in canada you have to stand in the sun uncovered for over 2 hours, so you are getting NO d3 in the winter. This will cause depression, and weight gain. On top of this, a high carbohydrate diet will also cause depression, and certain plant foods will also inhibit your body's production of vitamin D. This compounds to create a serious mental problem, I myself was suffering from this. Once I cut all sugars and carbohydrates out of my diet and started supplementing d3 all of this went away. There is a reason people from a northern climate subsist on a high fat low sugar diet, because you do not have sunshine to help with the difficiencies in a high vegetable diet, and the vegetables are not available in the winter. So please, if you are coming from another country where it is typically hot, you may think it impossible to give up things like rice, or bread, and fruit, but you must at least try to do it in the winter, aim for less than 20 grams of carbohydrates. If you simply must have some rice, try to limit it to less than 100g, and you MUST exercise heavily the same day to burn up that sugar to keep your insulin levels down, and try to only eat 1 to 2 meals a day. If you do this you will not have to rely on nasty prescription drugs, but please do consult your doctor if you are still feeling depressed, as it could also just be a mental disorder, which could still need some sort of medication.

I visited Canada for the FIRST time a few years ago , and it was bitter sweet The country is beautiful, nice and modern BUT everything seemed so Cold , depressing and fake . Fake smiles, fake nice people, everything seems so individualistic and selfish. It seems like such a lonely, depressing and isolated place . People work , pay taxes , and live in small circle. Many of my friends who moved to Canada , have turned to Alcohol and drugs . They think it's cool and helps them fit in , with other college students, but deep down they are lonely and depress and use drugs to get them through.

I've worked in psych units for 3 years, and now in corrections for a year and I can tell you firsthand this country is breaking apart. So much corruption in the government - but most of all, we are all taxed to death here and mental health support and resources are limited. It's so damn hard to succeed in this country. 10 years ago my parents bought a house in my home city for 180k, that same house is now worth 500k. I can't afford to live in the city I grew up in - even with a government job. The tax rates are just absurd here too - over 50% of my income goes to taxes. Can't even afford childcare here and rentals are 1500$+ a month everywhere without utilities included. Canada is not an easy place to live by any stretch - and it's a very unforgiving country if you do find success because of the tax rates. People are breaking down and there is little funding and resources available for mental health - the correctional system is also overloaded as more people are turning to crime to survive. The police are also overloaded and scrape by with the funding they have to do their jobs with.

Going through the motions is what leads to this depression.

My wife, my 3 kids and I used to like Vancouver but not anymore!!! The weather is why we plan to leave for good but also the expensive rents! I also heard about horror stories at many hospitals (and yes, I have worked in Africa and to be honest, Africans hospitals are way more functional than the ones in Canada in terms of human aspect… there they care, Canadians do not give a shit about anyone!!! And I am saying this as a Belgian!!! I have some African colleagues at work here and at least 80 percent of them either want to go back to Africa (one is actually going to start an Afro business there and build his own house) or move to Europe (one of them plans to live to my homeland Belgium and two others in France as apparent the pensions there are way better than the Canadian one) as soon as they get enough experience in canada! None of us at work , including me, want to retire or get old here in Canada! For me personally, it is the Canadian extreme loneliness and lack of willingness to open to others that really shuts me down… I am fed up and and tired of paying taxes in a country where some (not all) hospitals and some retirement homes treat patients like … objects, not human beings! I now understand (as before I did not) why even some of my African colleagues are looking forward to go back to Africa or to some of them, immigrate to Europe! .. none of us want to be left alone and depressed in this so highly individualistic and unfriendly, falsely “cool” country called Canada… a country that claims America and France are racist countries when not even one CEO in Canada is coloured! I am also fed up of Canadians being cool!!!! Cool???? Yes, their humour is crap and they are all too serious… not astonishing why so many end up being depressed or on meds to be able to function! Last: I am fed up with 1. The stupid credit score system which makes North Americans anxious and frustrated!!!! Stupidity does not even exist in France or Belgium where I am from! 2.food is Canada is … not good…lol… really close to being bad! 3.the country is boring… reason… people are so disciplined and nothing happens!!! I just miss Europe even if we are far from being perfect and I prefer our imperfections to the Canadian perfect society which end up making people boring and annoying!!! 4. Canadians are shallow compared to us Europeans 5. Their transit system sucks if compared to Europe 6. Health care system is nothing comptable to what we got in Europe!!!! Result: I leave Canada years before retirement as The last thing I want for me is to remain in a country and get “sunk” Into Canadian depression, Canadian loneliness and Canadian “coolness”. Ohh just as an indicator, it is really rare to see someone who is happy in Vancouver BC these days… the city just looks like a factory to make people work, make Canadian banks richer and pay taxes! Apart from that, I do not give a damn about the beautiful scenery and lakes as long as everyone around gets scammed with unjustified and ridiculous high cost of living!!!

Hey brother u are completely right. People live in denial and want to appear happy all the time. When you talk about the pressure and mental health problems involved, no one wants to pay attention. But this shit is real men.....I am a Nigerian and I have been suffering from depression when I was a teenager mainly from pressures from society and parents to be the best especially in academics. I dont really know the actual cause of depression but it happened to me. There are people that are able to manage these pressures so well and there are some that struggle. Through out my academic life I struggled with mental health and suicide thoughts. So I can relate to what you are saying. People especially Nigerian parents should learn to be open and pay attention and talk about mental health issues with their kids, especially during their academic years because this struggle is really tough especially for some very sensitive personalities. Some may be able to handle it and some may not be able to. Thank you for openly talking about this struggle.

Everyone has got their hand in your pocket. The banks, insurance companies, airlines, telcos....etc. Real estate is an unattainable dream in most major cities. Canada gives you 2 choices. You can live somewhere where it's affordable, but there is no opportunity. Or you can live somewhere where opportunities are a little better, but it's completely unaffordable. Every time I go back it's the same. People working their asses off at multiple jobs and not getting ahead and many end up on anti-depressants, pain medication or are self medicating with drugs, alcohol or unhealthy food. Spencer (VIU) had a lot of external pressures including a disabled mother. My daughter was on campus and heard the onlookers' screams. Suicides happen everywhere but the real scandal is how the Uni's try to downplay it. Mental health is vital and is usually helped by having a large group of friends. Real friends, not Facebook friends.

Remember that the world isn’t depressing, it’s only the system we have built for ourselves. When was the last time most of us spent even an hour in nature? Doing nothing but watching the trees sway and listening to the birds chirp. We spend time driving, working, worrying about bills, barely scraping by. Something eventually has to change, it’s too late for us but not for our future grandchildren.

From the UK, which has its problems but after coming to Canada twice for a month at a time to see if I could live here I couldn't. Thanks for sharing this video. I have always kind of liked your videos and could relate to my own self. I would just say, we have to fight out all the demons and depressions and anxieties are part of that fight too. There is misery everywhere but the only constant that drives us is HOPE.. hope for a better life.. a better future.. we cannot get away with these psychological pressure.. we have to face it no matter what.. that's how I keep reminding myself all the time.. but deep within I am depressed about everything I have to go through..

Omg I don’t like what I m hearing and I totally wanna give you a hug. I lived in Canada as well, came in as an international student and lived in Vancouver and the Toronto. I m glad you are prayerful. I m in my 30s now and live in the 🇬🇧. If I could say one thing to my younger self or to you; Always follow your heart and always ask God for wisdom. Avoid caving into any form of pressure and stay focused on what you want. It doesn’t matter where you come from, don’t see yourself as an African or Black or whatever, just keep an open mind and maintain an excellent spirit. Too many negative people everywhere that wanna assume you are a dreamer but don’t listen to them. I enjoyed my time in Canada, I had ups and downs but I never limited myself as an African lady and I found love easily too and people were very friendly to me. Just maintain your positive spirit and always focus on opportunities in any given situation. Lots of ❤️

And one day you will conquer anything you want. Happiness is just a mile away. I hope all the students who are going through this will get all the success in life they deserve. I have gone through it, being an international student in canada, brown colored, Living all alone. I have learnt alot. But life is good after all. I thank to God and wish the same for all of you.

I feel you on this one. Been here for just over a year but gosh! My oh my am I stressed! Studying fulltime and working a full time plus 2 part time jobs. I dont kmow how I'm doing it but I'm pushing on. I have 2 more weeks of class then I'll start working on my research. Hopefully it gets to slow down but damn! Life here is tough. And then everybody back home expects you to send money bluh bluh. Personally, it's mostly been exhaustion but also feeling trapped in a way. That feeling however keeps me pushing forward. I understand this pressure can bring mental breakdown to some, and needs to be addressed in the Canadian society.

when I went to University in the 1970's it was just as stressful and we had similar expense and we just got on with it. My Daughter had 35,000 in student loans even after we gave her 30,000 of our money, so 65,000 in school costs( she also had a full time job at the time she was at SFU). Hay she made it and paid off her student loan and we as parents of course forgave the money we gave her. Pressure and stress is part of life and unfortunately, some can not handle it, most can, we are always sorry to hear of the unfortunate circumstances but that is the reality of life. you have to struggle to make life better down the road.

For me I’d say, we as people are not meant to be alone. Everything highlighted in this video speaks to the aloneness and sense of hopelessness that comes from it. I am a Nigerian, lived and worked here all my life only ever traveled to Ghana. I can say for sure, life isn’t easy everywhere. However, we are becoming a generation who take pride in not caring about others and living a life of solitude. This I think it’s the biggest problem everywhere. I only hope we learn to open our hearts and minds first as people and then to other people. We are meant to be social, to live in communities and to have a sense of belonging where we see other people with their challenges and know that we aren’t alone. I do not the see an end insight as the bragging right now is about how quickly you “cut people off”, how much you don’t care whilst dying inside. I can only hope we all try in our small ways to build and nurture communities or small circles in our lives to hold our hands through the ups and downs of life cos it gets harder the older you get.

I don’t know if you’re coming from experience but I lived in both places and found Sweden much friendlier, peaceful and comfortable space than Canada. To be fair in Canada I can only speak for Toronto, but in Sweden I’ve lived all over the place. It was much easier to socialize, find a job and feel at pease here. I think I’m one of those people who prefers Europe to Americas overall, since I’m originally European. The biggest difference for me was the level of superficiality in Canada which is much lower in Sweden.
