OMG, those buildings are insanely gorgeous! I could spend all day just looking at them.

Next time you visit you should explore some other cities, as the vibe is so different. Must see places in Latvia: Kuldīga, Sigulda, Cēsis, Venspils, Liepāja, many of the old castles - Koknese, Rundāle, and many many more. Although, it should be said that you would need a car for it. P.S It kind of pains me to see people visit only Riga yo understand what Latvia is, as it is the nicest city in all Latvia and is different from most other cities, as it is the most cullturally rich, diverse and, no doubt, beautiful, but it does not reflect the reallity. Of course, if you have only one or two days, then Riga is definately the place to visit.

I'm an American and I am planning a trip to Latvia for next May! This is the best video I have found to see what is in store for me in Riga, I cant wait to keep following you guys and see all the other places you go! You guys are awesome

you were wondering why is it called Swedish gates - its because they were built at the end of 17th century when Riga was occupied by Swedish power

Haha, that street was actually called "anxiety street"

It's called the Swedish gate because Latvia was under Sweden for a long time :D It was built in the time when Swedes were here. History. Also, in public restrooms, even in the train station or bus station, you have to pay for restrooms. You got lucky. Sad that you didn't eat Latvian food though, it's better than ramen, trust me.

I'm Australian. I haven't even been to Europe but funny enough I have Latvian citizenship by descent ( my gandmother is from Latvia) so it's nice to see Latvia through someone else.

The Swedish gate gets its name from when the Swedes occupied Riga and Russia (I think?) tried to take it back. Instead of attacking, they closed off the cities connections to the outside and so they couldn't get food and other supplies. The Swedes had a few months worth of food but when it ran out they all had to leave the city through that gate :)

Beautiful City. Were there some weeks ago. And you could get the US vaccination transferred to the EU C0vid passport. It is possible here in Norway. Just a small stop in Göteborg :D And I booked a barber shop appointment before I traveled... even got a Single Malt :D Trevlig resa!

Trauksme in Latvian actually means "alert". And "brīvība" means freedom, so Brīvības iela is 'Freedom street'. Back in Czars Time it was Alexander Street named by Czar Alexander obviously. In 1919 during German occupation it was Wilhelm strasse. During Soviet occupation Lenin's street (Ulica Lenina). Every other from freedom represented some occupant personality, so nobody of those guys were keen in freedom as You can see. The Swedish gate is where supposedly Swedish army went in to Riga. There's a legend, that Gustav Vasa lost his riding boot while passing across mote there. "Swedish times" are considered most mild in Latvian history for Latvian peasant. While still being serfs in German, Polish or Swedish mansions, Latvians were better off during this time. Some were able to proof themselves in crafts, trade, science etc. Some Latvians served in Swedish army, even rising to officer ranks, such as captain and so...

As a Latvian this made me feel nostalgic. I moved to Canada over 10 years ago and since then haven't been to Latvia but surely will go there once the Covid thing is much calmer.

I like to learn the local language...."thank you" is the first word one should always learn...next dress like a local and eat like a local. PS Eating is the best part! Oh and aciu is thank you in Lithuanian...you will get lots of smiles when you use it.

As someone who visits Latvia to see family every year it makes me so happy that you are enjoying your stay in Latvia. Honestly just watching this makes me miss it and tbh I learnt quite a lot about Riga just from watching this video and I literally go every year and did know about a few of the attractions 😅

It's so cool to see your country from someones else's perspective, many people don't visit Latvia these days, refreshing to see, a great video! One thing you should have visited 100% though is the "national library" which in Latvian is "nacionālā bibliotēka", that place is really amazing, sad to see you guys missed it!

Lived in Riga for 13 years(now in Ventspils) love the city, but there is dark side, other sides of city, are dirty and looks like still in ussr, but either way loved the vid, hope u enjoy our country.

A little mistake - you don't need to know russian to get job , except if you want to join company which mainly has russian employees , perhaps russian owned co . But of course most adults over 40 still know it from the soviet times.

Latvia Sweden (from Gotland to Ventspils) is something like 160km. That's a huge trip.

I’m Russian born in Latvia. And we all know Latvian perfectly, and English of course. It’s not true, that you are not excepted by employers if you don’t know russian. It more works oppositely, that you are not employed on high positions if you have Russian surname, even tho you the best specialist. But still many Latvians think that they are "discriminated" meanwhile we, Russians, can’t even have at least one Russian school in Latvia (because they closed all of them, why? because they are nationalists) instead of embracing diversity and multiculturalism they try to kill our culture. Felt like you need to know the other side.

As Latvian it was very cool to look at your city from a diffrent perspective. You are contantly like ''oh i know this place'' or ''oh i live relatively close''. As well as person who speaks three languages (English, Latvian and Russian) there might be problems with people, glad you didn't have any. About the situacion with bubble tea. I never visited spacificly that one, but ther is one more nearby that i belive is better.

When u live in Latvia and somone say prices are cheep

Latvia is a great place to live. Safe, beautiful, cheap enough and friendly. Im proud of my folks to have kept it so nice and clean and modern. Malachi. Especially Riga. Latvia is very small and population is 1.89mill. Winters are full of snow, and summers are very hot. For personal reasons I had to leave my home country 15 years ago, but if I could I would move back. Rn, Ive built my life elsewhere.

i personally hate riga jts too crowded and everything is far lore expensive than from where im around and especially woth covod it's scaries lmao
